Sago Palm Bonsai
Comments (12)I don't know if the original batch were just immature (and then not allowed to grow longer by being confined in a bonsai pot), but sagos, if left in ideal conditions (e.g. planted in the ground in the right climate) become really huge, so if you want to keep it small (and succeeding leaves) you need to keep it in a smallish pot, keep the roots trimmed as with any bonsai, and make sure it gets a lot of strong sun (a.m. preferred) which will help to keep leaves smaller. I wouldn't cut the original ones, just keep an eye on the new ones (they shouldn't get as long as the ones you're worried about - and if you want to cut those, it's up to you). The thing is, only a couple of leaves grow annually, so you have to be extremely patient, and decide carefully about cutting anything (they could always be cut at some future time after all)....See MoreSago transplant trauma
Comments (7)Your plant will be easier to work with than the other. You could go up about 6 inches with the new cut. Rooting hormone wouldn't be a bad thing to use, but most of the ones available retail are the powder types and if you put that on first, then the tree sealer doesn't stick very well. If you had a liquid, like "Dip and Grow', then you could mix that with a Daconil solution and then paint the wound with the sealer after that. Your long term problem might be the impact of the car on the stem. If there was a strong impact, that may cause a bruse and could start a rot in the stem a year or two down the road. It is funny that this was the only thing you found while searching. In the past, I have caught so much crap from some people on this forum for sending over my articles, but I have had what you were looking for in my article section for years. I will try this and see what happens, but these might help everyone understand what to do: http://cycadjungle.8m.com/cycadjungle/Most%20Frequently%20Asked%20Questions.html http://cycadjungle.8m.com/cycadjungle/Horticulture%2C%20Article%204%20Never%20throw%20away%20a%20cycad.htm...See MoreWhen is it safe to transplant large sagos?
Comments (4)Is now a safe time to transplant sagos? I have several in my back yard that I'm considering giving away; they were my dad's; he died earlier this year; they're just growing out in the back yard; I'd like to get rid of them; will make it easier for my lawn service to mow the back yard. It's been hot here of late; mid to upper 90's each day for the last 2 weeks. Is it too hot to transplant sagos at this time? Comments (43)I have a Male and a Female Sago both about 4 feet tall. Both of them regularly (more from the male) sprout "Pups". I take a sharp spade (small shovel) and get as close to the parent plant as possible and then put pressure until the Pup pops off. When we vacation, I have sometimes had to remove up to 20 or more pups from the male sago. The wounds always heal with no care and the parent plants always do fine after. The males trunk is a little deformed from all the surgeries to remove pups :) Difference between male and female..... Males have a large pollen stalk that grows out of the center - later dries up and falls off. Females have what looks like a large pregnant belly that is holding all of the red seed pods. This belly opens up and has TONS of seeds!! These eventually move to the bottom as more fronds grow and then they fall on the ground. Here are pictures of the male and female plants........See Moremarciem
