So far so good for 2 Trachys planted outside Nov 1

My goal this winter was to keep my T.fortunei and T.x hayes "stiffie"( I beleive a cross between a waggy and fortunei)between 10F and 90F so far so good lowest 9F hi 90F these temp extremes are only reached for a short time-say 2 hours-these trachys were kept in a umbrella g/h 49x44 with 2 vent flaps, begining next week temps should be warm enough to consider removing greenhouse but I will still use to cover to keep them dry as I beleive letting plants get to much rain before temps warm up for good is the main hazard now that worst of (sustained) cold weather is behind us my fortunes outside have been better in some ways then my palms inside.Hope to post some pics before they are all planted,planted and update throughout the year including multiple protection methods for next year- ouch it hurts to even mention next winter I,m not convinced this one will ever end yet!!!So how is everybody elses doing? any more pics?how about a round of monthly updates from ya'all starting now with March.

I have some palms that i am trying out in protected locations, but no actual protection otherwise. Most are marginal here, but readily available at garden centers. Our microclimates are so complex here. Someone on the other side of town might be able to grow something that you have trouble with. Our low this winter was 29F for a bit before sunrise one day. We had a dozen or so frosty mornings and other than that we stayed around 35F.

Majesty palm - outer half of fronds damaged, but already has 3 spears as of today and one opening up

Foxtail- less hardy than supposed. Four large fronds completely fried, but opening a spear. I moved it to a more protected location with two-story walls on three sides and facing south.

Dypsis Decipiens (manambe palm) - seedling, unprotected out in the open - no damage.

Kentia Palm - No damage

Flame Thrower- No damage

King - slight damage

Nice! sounds like spring has arrived in your area and palms are responding we have another 3-4 weeks here but finally forecast has us warming into upper 40s to 50 by next week woohoo!!!

First, tried no-till in order to save work. Compost was not ready by planting time & what I did use harmed or killed the seedlings. Soil had become too acid & plants wouldn't grow until applied lime, late with soil analysis. How would unfinished compost harm plants?

I'd really been wondering when the redbuds would show that first blush of color and finally .... just in the last day or two, they are showing up along the roadsides. A deer visited a few days ago and snacked on some of my tulips :( but the ones that are left are beginning to bloom and they are beautiful! Phlox is now blooming and the hostas are growing fast. I'm now pretty sure that the tree that I thought might be a crabapple is just that, and it looks like another small tree is a redbud (yay). It's fun discovering what's growing here, now that the weather has finally decided to warm up. A neighbor said 12 wild turkeys were in our yard the other day, but we were at work so we missed seeing them. The street we live on is called Turkey Run Drive, so now we now how it got its name :). Oh, and one bit of good news .... they started the dirt work where the building will go, and when they stripped off the bermuda grass the land is mostly nice dirt, with only one little strip of red clay running through it. This may have once been farmland, or a pasture. So that's good news for the vegetable garden. Suzie

momo3... thanks for checking in! just so happens that lots has been going on in the last two weeks, but it's still very incomplete. For starters, we had lots more digging while the pb's landscaping crew came in and buried some downspouts and dug out the patio and planting boxes, etc....but still no sign of the actual pavers that will make up both patio and pool deck....so PB does a total 180, sends the plaster crew out and lo and behold we were pebbleteched on Thursday and water was added Friday. PB will complete the patio and decks within the next 10 days...NOW HERE'S THE KICKER...the whole family left town for 10 days at the Jersey shore on Thursday, and we won't see the pool until the 6th! It's sitting in the backyard all ready for us and we're not there!!! PB is minding the pool while we're away, brushing and balancing, etc...esp. since he's building the patio all week anyway. Murphy's Law or what? I'll post pics next week when I return....have to check the log to see if you've updated your pics too...hope you're all swimming now!

Those daisies are asters also known as a montauk Rose. The lower lights are florescent and give off heat, they heat the rootstock and help start the process of soil drying, and keeping the soil close to room temperature. My readings say I am usually within 2 degress of 72 to 74 air temp. they are timed to come on one hour before before the upper cool LED lights come on.
