Coconut palms: Talls v Dwarfs....
Comments (6)@ kinzyjr- I wont buy bare rooted, all the ones I got like that died. But the ones in containers do pretty well and transplant fine too. It seems to be difficult to find any coconut palms here. But I'm sure they are readily stocked near you. If not you are lucky enough to live a drive away from where they can be grown with ease. You can probably find some very large ones there too. :) @ tropicalzone7- Hmmmmmm, that is interesting. The darker fronds are no surprise, the malayan dwarfs like what we have are supposed to be a light yellowish-green. I kinda like it though, it stands out from other palms very fast. As for the faster growth, I wonder why. I tend to get slow growth in winter. This frond is taking forever to open, but it already has another spear making its way up. Either that frond is lagging, or the palm is happy. Good luck everyone. :) - US_Marine...See MoreCoconut Palm in Tampa, FL
Comments (13)"I may be wrong but I thought I say one or 2 out by clearwater, isnt that the same zone as tampa? I dont live there so I dont know for sure" It depends which part of Tampa and which part of Clearwater. There are parts of Tampa which border on 10b and other parts which are closer to 9b. Likewise with Clearwater....areas near the beach are 10b most years, and other areas are 9b/10a. Id say most of Clearwater is 10a over the long haul. Clearwater Beach is loaded with Coconuts as nearly every house has one in the front yard....See MoreCoconut Palm Tree Tips
Comments (43)Depends on many factors. They do not need humidity and do just fine in tropical deserts as long as they are irrigated. The limiting factors would be water, unless you are going to irrigate, and temps. Its not always the cold that kills them, its the extended cool season or lack of heat. If your climate has highs above 70f in every month then you should be good to go. The warmer the better....See MoreHow tall will my coconut palm be before it starts producing fruit
Comments (22)I was growing store bought ones in pots and were growing nicely but they died on me, I've found thrips eating the roots but it was too late and have destroyed most of my other plants, maybe from contaminated imported compost because out in the middle east we don't have thrips. Anyway I've bought around 7 de-husked store coconut now one already sprouted but I'll have to wait until dad digs up the garden with a crane and get some gardening soil then I'll plant them out... I'm hoping they'll produce since others in my area never did mostly because of poor soil fertility and lack of care. They sell here from germinated to 2 meter tall but out of my price range 30 - 200 $...See Moresnookpoon
