Coconut Palm in Tampa, FL

tampapalm

During my Memorial Day trip to the Keys I went hunting for some young Coconut Palms on my father-in-lawÂs 4 acres and the mission was a success! I found numerous candidates but four, 2 footers under the same tree caught my eye, and now have a home in Tampa, FL.

I live about ½ mile from the Hillsborough River which I understand will help with the temp issues but IÂm seeking some creative ideas on how to keep these beauties warm during the winter months. Does wrapping the trunk help? Once they are large how should I go about covering the fronds during cold nights? Will they become tolerant to the cold with age and eventually not need to be protected? IÂm willing to baby these a lot so throw all ideas on the table. Thanks
