Tree Peonies-How long in spring before new growth starts?

Hello everyone. I planted 3 tree peonies last spring. All three sprouted and appeared healthy. So far this spring, only 1 has sprouted out. The other 2 appear as if they are dead. I'm a little bit afraid to dig around them to check for signs of life. How long do I wait or is it too late???

I am not sure what sprouts are you talking about. Tree Peonies have leaves emerging from a wooden part which is above the ground. They wake up early for me. All my TP have buds now. First buds/leaves appeared about 3 weeks ago (I am in zone 6/7). Sprouts that emerge from the ground often come from a herbaceous Peony rootstock (most of TP are grafted). That is why TP should be planted deep so they can develop their own roots above the graft union. Herbacious suckers should be removed. If your TPs are alive, you should at least see some fat eyes on wooden stems at this time.

I would give it some more time.you don't want to go digging around the roots and damaged them.Here in Maine they are just starting to show red growth on stems and we have had temps in the 70's and 80's

Since the tree was pulled out of it's source of water and nourishment, the clock has been ticking away as it is drying out and has a limited survival opportunity. If you were to let the remaining roots promptly plunge into a pool of nutritious water and soak for a day or two to recharge, the plant would have a full tank of fuel before starting the next challenge. No longer having a complete set of roots, the tree will not be able to supply all the intact branches with their usual provision of fluid. Pruning away about a third or so of the upper branch structure has value.A longtime fruit pro told me, that for a bare root peach tree, to remove all branches until you are left with a 3 foot tall 'whip'. As the roots grow and new shoots develop, remove all new shoots except for 3 or 4 near the top that are growing in different directions. These will become the eventual large scaffold branches that all peach branches will grow out from. I spike the pool water with Super Thrive, but other water-soluble fertilizer can help also. I keep the pool fluid for the tree to get more doses slowly poured on it every now and then after being planted.

Kate and Seil - those are drop-dead gorgeous pictures! I love the contrast of deeply saturated colors in each of those - the purple-pink-white of the iris combo and the deep carnation pinks against the purple pansies and whitish Easter Basket, then the deeply saturated white peonies (in my world, white can be saturated when there's not a hint of cream) against those great poppies. It's great fun to mix in those perennials with the roses! Glad y'all liked my photo too. Elks - yes, it's nice to have those lovely Canadian Explorers that were three of the very few roses in my yard that didn't have to be cut to the ground. Since they're all climbers, that gives them the necessary head start to catch up to the peonies I'm sure. No clue about the iris conundrum, Kate, except that this was a decidedly odd year for timing of everything, and maybe the iris felt they passed their window of opportunity without a chance to build up the blooms. Certainly the peonies are passing at a record pace in my yard. Hang in there ratdogheads - rose season is around the corner. As long as those buds are forming there'll be roses before too long. what does it matter... there isnt anything you can do about it ... in spring.. any improperly hardened off parts.. will have blackened... and you can prune it out ... this is one reason i NEVER fert trees.. shrubs.. and conifers ... they are not children.. they dont need to be fed ... ever .. IMHO ... if something is lacking in the soil.. based on a high level soil test.. that has nothing to do with 'feeding babies' ... was yours a recent transplant.. if so.. and you didnt bare root the plant.. you also have incorporated fert .. so you may have doubled up on such.. by adding more .... ken ps: i am going to bet.. its not going to be a huge problem in your zone ... compared to froze solid MI in winter ...

The terminal bud on a citrus shoot, also called the dominate bud or apical bud, produces an auxin called Indole-3-acetic acid (IAA) which is sent down the shoot inhibiting all growth of lower buds. You need to remove the terminal bud so that the tree can begin to produce side branching. Unfortunately, it is now September, getting late in the growing season. It would have been much better if the stem was cut last spring as it would have given the tree the entire summer to grow. Whatever, the tree is no good the way it is now. Cut the tree at 28 to 30 inches. The tree should show some side branching in a week or two. The days are now getting shorter, so much depends of the weather at this time of year. I would leave alone. At this time of the year the roots would be soft so if they are there you could damage them.

I would suggest that you plant some annuals around them this summer. Then this fall wiggle the stem very gently. If the graft is solid you may still have a chance of the tree peony sending out new life next year. Peonies, especially tree peonies, are not an instant gradification plant.
