Easiest Passifloras from seed?

I've gotten three kinds of seed: Murucuja, flavicarpa, and mollissimma. I guess it's been about 2 months since I planted the mollissimma, no signs of anything. I tried soaking the next group in juice...keeping my fingers crossed but it seems slow going.

I haven't had any luck with mollissima seeds, haven't tried flavicarpa from seed and I've always started murucujas from cuttings. I have great germination rates with the seeds from my amethystina and vitifolia plants. I'd say almost 100% sprout. I've also had good results with actinia and malformis seeds and to a lesser degree with antioquensis seeds.

Mollissima is one of the easiest for me within a week.. I just started some more..Trying to use the seed I have.... The Actina, quadrangularis, Ligularis and Panana Red all within 15/17 days (starting them outside in flats)...I do have a handful of others that are real sloooow pokes...Some I have just given up on...LOL

Are you using a light setup or sowing outside? Dahlias are real easy but need an earlier start. Touch-me-nots, forget-me-nots, shasta daisy, salvias, amaranthus, calandula, marigolds, columbine to name a few. Anyway, what does well one year, might not the next. You never know with seed growing. Expect some failure, possibly a lot. As you go along, you learn to troubleshoot a bit as you figure out why your plants perish. You might have a ton of sunflowers one year and have all the rodents eat them the next. Or something germinate heavily one year and nothing the next. Or have them all rot in a cold wet June. Or have something germinate wonderfully, grow your little plants, put them in the ground and find out it is a bad year for cutworm or slugs or beetles or something you will never figure out for sure. You may ask yourself why do I bother? By then though, you already bought the seeds so you just go ahead and do it again. It also helps to search google. Try using germination with your plant name. Some plants are easy but have certain requirements like freshness, warm and cold stratification, scarification, etc. Anyway the results can be rewarding. I call this one Angelina because the day I noticed its first bloom was the day my neice was born. Perhaps a real dahlia grower would have plowed this one under because the orchid form is not perfect and it could be 7' tall. But since I grew it, I get to keep it and I haven't found one like it for sale locally.

I have never grown Passion Flowers before, but I bought caerulea, actinia, incarnata and edulis seeds online in January. I soaked the seeds in a weak hydrogen peroxide solution (2T of 3% in 1 qt of water)for a day or two, then planted them about 1/2 inch deep in a seed-starting mix in plastic containers with clear lids . I used an old electric blanket, set on low, for a heating pad. The seeds were planted on January 10, 2010. I think I planted about 12 - 15 seeds. Some germinated after a few days and some took a few weeks, but one or two haven't come up at all, yet. I now have 10 seedlings! Most of them are about 4 inches tall. One just popped out of the soil yesterday. Now I'm trying to decide if I should put them in a bit larger pot indoors for a few more weeks, or just leave them in the pots they are in until I plant them outside. I have no idea how well they will grow outside. I live in the Willamette Valey of Oregon, USA. I saw one growing at a local nursery last weekend. It was outside all winter and had not been cut back. We had several nights that were well below freezing last winter, but this plant was protected between two buildings. Have fun experimenting!

How to grow passiflora alata and edulis from seed

I've grown some P. Alata from seed just a few weeks ago. They were of the Thompson and Morgan / Eden Project range. I took 7 of the 15 seeds provided, and soaked them overnight in what started as warm water, but I didn't try to keep it warm. All the water does is start soaking through the hard seed coat to get water to the embryo seed inside. Another method is to carefully chip off some of the seed coat with a knife, but this can be tricky, and those alata seeds were damn tough! Then, I just sowed them in a mix of 20% vermiculite to 80% peat-based compost, with a scattering of vermiculite on top. It said expect 1 to 6 months germination, but I had 2 within a week, and about 2 months later (now), have 5 of them in desperate need of repotting since they're now about 8 inches high already!

I had some quadrangularis come up within a week, and caerulea within 2 weeks, but everything else seems to take 6 weeks or more. I have had faster results with some by first letting them soak in wet paper towels for a week before planting them. And I do use a heat mat set to 85 degrees for 12 hours a day. I have heard of some passies taking 7 months, so I guess the rule of thumb is to keep waiting!

Wow, that seems pretty fast for most!

I tried a new batch where I soaked them in juice, then I put them in peat pellets ziploc baggies to keep them hot and humid. I've got them out of the sun, but outside where it is VERY warm. I am hoping this next group sprouts faster than the others have. They looked like they were about to split the seed coat when I got them out of the juice so maybe I'll have a bit more luck!

So the basic rules of seed growing, soak soak and soak?
Is it safe to soak in Passionjuice until you see a sprout? Can you nick it and then soak it?

I have sanded them down in the past and ruined the seed so want to try to sprout them the best and safest method

Hi Flutter,

I would not use passionflower juice. It may well have germination inhibitors--to keep the seeds from sprouting while they're still inside the fruit. I'd just use distilled water or water that you leave out for 24 hours (to let the chlorine evaporate). Then plant, keep warm and moist, and wait.

It's not necessary to nick or sand the shell of passiflora seed. It's my understanding that unlike, say, Pride of Barbados, passi seeds are not impervious to water. If they were, soaking them wouldn't do any good.
