How to grow passiflora alata and edulis from seed

Hi, i was wondering if anyone has any helpful ideas on how to grow passiflora alata and edulis from seed also is it completely necasary to put them in tepid (blood warm) water does it help the germination process also do i need to keep this water at a steady temperature if so how heat mat?

I grew Passiflora edulis from seed a few years back. As far as I remember, I just saved some seed from a fruit, washed it, sowed it in multipurpose compost and put it in a heated propagator. This might not be the quickest method but it worked.

I've grown some P. Alata from seed just a few weeks ago. They were of the Thompson and Morgan / Eden Project range. I took 7 of the 15 seeds provided, and soaked them overnight in what started as warm water, but I didn't try to keep it warm.

All the water does is start soaking through the hard seed coat to get water to the embryo seed inside. Another method is to carefully chip off some of the seed coat with a knife, but this can be tricky, and those alata seeds were damn tough!

Then, I just sowed them in a mix of 20% vermiculite to 80% peat-based compost, with a scattering of vermiculite on top.

It said expect 1 to 6 months germination, but I had 2 within a week, and about 2 months later (now), have 5 of them in desperate need of repotting since they're now about 8 inches high already!

I would love some of them. Passion fruit is wonderful. I was looking at some on ebay but forgot to bid. How long does it take from seed to fruit. I also read that you need two so can you use plants from two different seeds from the same fruit? Let me know the amount for postage. Linda

Karyn, if your flavicarpa is grown from seed, then you never know when, or even if, it will bloom. Seedlings may take up to 2 or 3 years. Ninecrow, the fruit set will depend on the pollen parent, as flavicarpa is self-incompatible. What did you use? Same question for abdielg.

Hi All I've been with Gw for several years but since I'm struggling to germinate passiflora seeds I searched and found you! I was given some seed pods for passiflora foetida. I soaked fresh gooey seeds in room temperature, starting warm, water for 36 hours. I removed the remaining goo and planted in a seed starter mix. I used the plastic containers from produce so they do have air. I've kept them moist, not wet, in a room whose temp is around 80 degree dropping to about 75. After 38 days, not a single seed has germinated. I have now covered one container with a plastic bag, but it does allow some air in. I also read somewhere to FREEZE the planted seed, so the other container went into a plastic bag and then into the freezer yesterday. What I had read, was to freeze for a month....can that be right?
