Best Annual Last Year

Hi everyone. I am always looking for new annuals to try in my garden, and was wondering which annuals performed best for you this year. I probably pranted 20 varieties from seed with these doing the best:

Gazania

Osteospermum (until the hot temps)

Salvia

James

I tried a new salvia last year. It was a much deeper shade of blue. I really liked it very much and will definitely do it next year. It is called Evolution.

mnwsgal, So far I haven't seen any deer or rabbits here. I know they are on the other side of the road in the woods and last fall would cross over to my neighbour's to eat her apples, but at other times of the year they seem to stay away. Fine by me. There's quite the collection of hostas here. :O) Hellooooo Vera!!

HH. Someone needs to invent the "beem me up Scottie" technology so that we can all visit each other and lend a hand. Wouldn't that be fun?! Woof! This is Brody. I've never had a problem because we've always had a "loose" dog on patrol. As far as ground critters, I have 5 cats. The only problem they haven't solved is the squirrels that live in our roof (and maybe walls).

Bill: It's always bad. They're always raising water prices and restricting us of usage, but this year is BAD. Hopefully the rest of this month and march pans out. After that, we get very, very little rain traditionally. All of SoCal is actually considered desert. We have to import the majority of our water. I'll get by --- you can have your 3 feet of snow and subzero temps. :P Alex: I usually start them at the beginning of the year. But, between a major toothache, contemplation over the drought to do anything at all, and overall procrastination, I just started a few days ago. Looking for the little tails peeking through paper towels daily. Overlap? Sometimes, not always. I'm usually pulling plants late Dec/Early Jan, but even the little frost we've had didn't do in 3 of my chinenses that still had tons of pods. This year I pulled all my annuums and chinenses that were podless when it got cold(anticipation) and they were just slowing for the winter. I should have let them be, but if a plant is going to sit around for 4 months not producing, it not worth my effort(watering, pest control, etc). Thanks All. Kevin

I found this list very interesting. I was happy to see some of my favorites mentioned: McEwan, Coetzee, Byatt, Atwood, and others. I'm the only person I've ever met who did not like Fitzgerald's The Blue Flower. I could not understand what all the fanfare was about. Very sorry to see that W.G. Sebald did not garner much praise. The late author is way up at the top with me-- loved all 4 books by him I've read.

I always do from seed; meant to say that and the supplier was Park Seed Co.....not my favorite company, but I am sure others have it too. I also like Jung Seed Co.

My all-time favorite annual which I use every year is vinca; no diseases, no insects, easy from seed and you can save seeds from it. It is a great front of the border plant. The Mediterranean variety is great for baskets too.

Love that salvia! What a beautiful color

I can never think of the name of this stuff. It bloomed heavily in the spring, stopped over summer, then was gorgeous in the fall. I dug it up and I'm going to try to keep it in the house over winter. It still has a few blooms left even now. I took this picture a couple weeks ago:

It was also my first year to grow bat-face cuphea. It made a nice mound of bright red and stayed in bloom all summer. It didn't seem to get a lot bigger than it was when I planted it though.
