I entered that garden design contest.

...and, you get to vote on it. I didn't know that before today.

There aren't a lot of sites dedicated to edible landscape design, but this is one of the top twenty-five such sites in the world.

I'll get some free books and seeds and such, if I win. Plus, a funky little sign to stick out front. If I can leverage it, I can get the local newspaper to do a little article on it and spread the word about gardening and edibles landscaping and such. mebbe.

otoh, I was never quite sure of what kind of 'story' they wanted me to tell about our garden. I don't think I gave them the warm fuzzies they were looking for...

( Don't tell anyone, but that OSU gardening show? They might -maybe- *possibly* do a segment on our garden sometime next year. it's a big 'if' at this point, but we'll see. If we win this contest and share tha news with the folks at OSU...)

Plus, a pic of one my favorite views of the garden.

((Just think. Two years ago, I was simply worried about trying to fill that big hole by the foundation and get the drainage to run away from the house...and ended up with alla this.))

I'm glad you entered.

Now, I hope everyone here who enjoys seeing your photos and reading your posts about what you are doing will remember to go to that linked website every day to vote.

Even if you don't win, I am proud that you'll be showing the world what a gardener in a very hot place like southwestern Oklahoma can do with edible landscaping in the front yard. I truly believe seeing your garden will inspire some people to kick the lawn habit and put in an edible landscape.

I don't know if you ever go to the Potager Forum here at GW, but if you don't, I'd like to suggest you visit it and post photos of your garden and show them what you're doing. I think the folks there would love to see and hear about what you're doing.

Thanks all. . Deanna, I had no logic in plant placement, LOL. I know very little about design but I know what I like so tried to create what I have invisioned for my front yard. I like drifts of plants, purples, pinks and white, semi formal with a bit of a wild side. I placed the conifers first to give a transition between the woodlands and the flower garden which I am doing in my own landscape. Aftermidnight; The light pink are drift roses, the white and dark pink are phlox and the purple are listed as purple flowers.

Contractor wants to enter kitchen into tour/contest

We participated in a kitchen tour just after ours was completed - it was a fundraiser for the NICU in a local hospital (where I sometimes work), which is the only reason I agreed to do it! We were told NOT to be home during the tour, but I trusted the volunteer staff to keep an eye on things. They were stationed at the front door, and posted in several places inside, directing traffic to the correct place. Visitors either took off their shoes at the door, or put on disposable booties, so dirt was not an issue. The flow of traffic from room to room was clearly marked, and the adjacent rooms were roped off. A local upscale housewares company set my dining room table with stunning crystal and china (no, I didn't get to keep it!) My house never looked so good! It was fairly stressful, because I changed my dining room light fixture at the last minute (something I had been meaning to do for quite some time), and thoroughly cleaned up the whole place, inside and out, ahead of time. I removed all pictures of family and identifying information from view, so it felt more anonymous. Yes, I still felt a little vulnerable letting strangers into my home, but it was a trust thing. I was very flattered to be asked. Tickets were pricey enough that only people really interested in houses/kitchens came through - not the casual/curious tag sale crowd. It was not judged, but we got really nice compliments and feedback (reported to us by the volunteers who were stationed at my house). Most people just looked and didn't touch, but some opened cabinets/closets, etc. like they were buying a house, so I suggest you clean the inside of your cabinets, too!

Yeah, you gotta 'vote' by leaving a comment. Just tell them how wonderful I a... I mean... Tell them how wonderful you think our garden appears to all and sundry!

Edited to note: I don't know what the exact criteria is for winning, but comments are apparently a part of the judging. Several pros will also be judging the contest entrants.

And on a personal note, I KNOW that Seedmama...if she had the time...would rake in a lot of votes. She's done edible landscaping for YEARS. I may just catch her ear (if I can) and ask her to check out this thread. No promises...this new job is taking most if not ALL of her time but I know her soul would be happy to see what you have done!

You know why that pic is one of my favorite views of the garden?

Because that's what I see when I'm sittng under the cedar tree, drinking a glass of ice tea...

My favorite pic of the garden is one I took in the driveway bed about a month ago... I think it's the best pic I've ever taken in my life:
