Could a 50FT coconut palm tree survive here in Jacksonville???

Can anyone answer that question?? We all know about the St. Augustine coconut palm tree that keeps dying and coming back to life the past 3 years. But, if you put a 50FT coconut palm tree in jacksonville anywere. Your frontyard, in a shopping mall parking lot, does anyone think it would survive? I mean, it's mature enough to take colder weather than a smaller coconut palm tree, right??

It is true that an adult palm can take more cold than a seedling in most cases, but usually what really makes a palm more cold tolerant is how well it is established. Also a down side to having a huge coconut is that (at 50 feet tall) it will be completly exposed to all weather with no buildings to protect it. I would just get a nice moderate sized one that isnt too expensive and plant it in a nice microclimate by your house. If you protect it when temps go below freezing, it will get very little damage and you will enjoy it for many years.

The reason i am asking this is because i was told the other day by 2 guys that are landscapers in my neighborhood
that a man that owns a house somewhere on the St. Johns river here in jax bought two 50FT coconut palm trees 2 years ago in Miami and shipped them up here and he planted them in his backyard. The guy paid $5,000 for each of them. Those 2 landscapers were at his house 2 weeks ago and they said they are both doing fine. Both had perfect green leaves and had little coconuts on them. Kinda of crazy i think!

Royalpaulm, Thanks for the info on the winter weather in Clearwater/St. Pete. I think that couple of degrees difference is why when I was there last (about 7 years ago) I saw mature Malayans in St. Pete, but only saw a couple of mature Jamaican talls in Clearwater. Over here in Texas, the Mexican tall seems to be our best coconut for the Valley since it is hardy to 27F, but there are a lot of Malayans being planted in Brownsville, Port Isabel, and South Padre, when they are available that is. So far, I have only seen developing coconuts on a couple of Mexican talls over here, but as long as the winters stay mild in the Valley, the Malayans should have nuts in a year or two. It seems like the nurseries in the Valley have only recently started carrying Malayans, which may account for the lack of coconuts on trees already planted (many being too young). The nurseries over here do not have a regular supplier of coconut palms, so I am hoping to fill that void soon. John

Orlando has a really nice climate and considering how far away it is from the coast, it has very mild weather. Some areas by the coast (like tampa) which is south of orlando, got the same or cooler weather. I know that the theme parks in orlando (especially universal studios) has lots of tender plants that are growing very well (not sure how they are doing now though). Some of the plants I have seen there are... screw pines (Pandanus utilis) which was pretty tall and quite a few years old Peace lilies (Spathiphyllum wallisii) these were also pretty big and were in full shade Tri-color hibiscus (Talipariti tiliaceum) which was very large and heathy Hibiscus rosa-sinensis, which were large and flowering well, but not as healthy as they could be bromeliads, lots of different types from small airplants on the trees to large ones mounted on the trunk of the palms. Foxtail palms (Wodyetia bifurcata), they were large and healthy at the time and also right by a pond which probably help protect it from a frost And lots of others that I am forgetting too. They all seemed really happy before this freeze but I wonder if they are okay now (or if the park protected them from the freezes). I also think there are coconut palms in Sea World which are still alive (I think) and protected from extreme cold. Good luck!

garyiryna, as you know, i live In jacksonville, were these palms are really not exsistent. I bought this Royal near west palm beach this past April. the dead leaves you see are the ones that were on there when i bought the tree. That pic was taken months ago. i have new fonds on there now, but the same ones are still one there. we will see how this palm survives this winter up here. i will have it covered for sure. we will see if it lives

jaxboro,,, I actually got it off ebay. Im pretty sure they are still being sold (only got it for about 4 or 5 dollars w/o including shipping). If you want to know the sellers name I can tell you. I hope your palm gets some growth soon. As long as its condition begins to improve, there is lots of hope. Im sure by now the weather is getting pretty warm down there so I guess if any new growth is coming, it will be soon. I wish you luck!

I honestly wouldn't doubt that on a riverfront estate, if on the east banks of the river. I'm less than a mile from the river and my temps can be elevated 2-5 degrees from those across at NAS JAX.

No it will not live and if it was planted there this year it would be dead. Try if you like but it will die I'm sure of that. I live in south fl and they can be killed even in south fl.

jason_2010 you may be referring to the Vilano Beach Coconuts. There were 2 large cocos planted off the inlet north of Saint Augustine. Credit vdels1 for the pic.

WOW! those are beautiful palms theseventhlegend! Were in vilano beach are they located there? off A1A??? But those are not palms. Even though that is the st. johns, these palms are in jacksonville near beach BLVD i heard

I moved my potted one in the storage shed and it still got burned good. I plan on planting it next month, as this winter has been unusually harsh, and even more so with last years as well.

Those cocos in Vilano Beach are behind a home on the Intracoastal or right near the Ponce Inlet entrance. The St. Johns River is on the other side of the county by Hastings, Riverdale, Fruit Cove, and Orangedale.

jaxboro, i forgot to tell you that i also have a coconut palm i bought in cocoa beach 2 months ago. it is about 3 or 4 feet tall. i have it in a pot and i leave it in the garage everynight and bring it outside all day. i will send a pic on here tomorrow of it. the leaves are pretty burned right now, but i do not plan on putting it in the ground anytime soon
