I was out today watering the plants in the garage and discovered that my Chinese fan planting was damaged by cold. This planting was gorgeous (and big) What a loss! They are not as cold tolerant as I thought. The Phoenix canariensis, queen palms, sabals (louisiana, texana, palmetto, and mauritiiformis), pindo, and Washingtonias (filifera and robusta), Chamaerops, even the tropical guava and dwarf schefflera are fine. Really surprised because it has been a mild winter here (near 70 F today). But some days may have stayed in the 40's droping into upper 30's at night. I kept it on the drier side but still. Well, I really learned my lesson. Anyone know how far north Livistona chinensis can be found growing?
