You have been busy. How fun. I like the faces. You can copy things from magazines. I tried one or two projects and enjoyed them very much.

idabean is referring to the rural landscape cemetery movement, which came about as cities realized that land was getting scarcer and didn't need to be tied up with, ahem, dead folks. Additionally, the cemeteries of the early 1800s were rather dreary places and didn't inspire one to invest much in your dearly deceased. So - in the attempt to save the land nearest the urban centers for more lucrative endeavors, properties were sought out in the relative hinterlands and efforts made to make them more of a place to go visit and spend time with the loved one departed. Sort of like parks for the passed. Mount Auburn Cemetery actually precedes Frederick Law Olmsted Sr.'s design career. I think it dates to the early 1830s, and Olmsted began at Central Park in NYC in the late 1850s. Still, it is a fine example of working with the topography in laying out the design, and then making it beautiful and beckoning with the plantings and architecture. Back to the question: most all large cities took up this baton, and established their own rural landscape cemeteries. I'm very familiar with the Big Three of the Ohio River valley region. ***Spring Grove Cemetery, Cincinnati OH (700+ acres) ***Cave Hill Cemetery, Louisville KY (400+ acres) ***Lexington Cemetery, Lexington KY (150+ acres) These are all fine institutions that have maintained the traditions of their founding, and all have excellent horticultural collections - reaching arboretum status. Don't have the skills to post pics here, but I have many from each of these sites. The Ginkgo biloba at Cave Hill Cemetery is absolutely (and appropriately) other-worldly.

Thanks hopefulauther - Aeonium, will try and source one [or two] of those down. Chemocurl - no problems at all copy/paste and quote all you want,,,,if it means getting pictures posted, I'm all for it. Many message boards don't seem to have decent instructions on posting pics, if they have any info at all. Guess that's where we all come in :-)

I've been running a thread on the Building a Home forum that substantially repeats this thread and refers to our FAQ. The issue of private versus public albums on Photobucket came up (I thought the whole album had to be public to allow you to link to it without a password). aa62579 says that you can link to a specific photo in a private album and that link will be visible. You just can't link to the whole private album and see it without a password. I've never used Photobucket so I'm asking the question of those of you who are familiar with sites such as Photobucket, Picasa, PictureTrail, etc.. Is this a general characteristic of all web-hosting sites? I'd like to add this information to the FAQ. Thanks, Claire

Kathy, you are a very creative gal! I made two sort of oblong trough-type planters. DH drove over one!

How do you do the faces? I really like them.

I use alot of others ideas and make my own. I was hooked when I started. DH have a way of doing things like that. I had a leaf that mine hit. Thought it was way off the side but I thought wrong. Of course it was one of the nicest.

I started using one of those plastic masks from the craft store. But I have since made some molds from those masks you hang on the wall. I call them Mardi Grais masks.

Email me if you want more information. But be sure make it clear in the subject. My email seems to be messed up and I either don't get alot or they get deleted. Thanks Kathy

Does the mask press on top of the concrete or is the concrete layered over the mask. Can you use the mask again? I have a metal face, but I would not want her to be ruined.

Helen, I taped over the eye places and put the mask in a pan of sand to stabilize it. Then I lightly sprayed cooking oil (Pam or similar) on the inside. Add the turfa on that. Then I pop it out and use again. I would be afraid to do anything with the metal face. You would have to make a mold. I have made some pop of molds with pretty good success. My fear is that I can't get the mold off. Kathy

Thanks. I guess this is a next spring thing to think about because of the weather. I don't get past the thinking about it stage on lots of projects.
