Your AH-HA gardening moment of 2010

You ever get one of those ideas and go AH-HA, that makes more sense? I did in 2010. It sounds silly but here goes. I have a 6x6x3 compost bin. Each year I put leaves and coffee grounds in it. This year I GROUND UP my leaves with my mulching mower first. AH-HA! I should have compost way sooner next year AND the pile will be easier to turn over. What is your AH-HA moment of 2010?

Not really an AH-HA moment but a discovery. In early summer I was eating tomatoes breakfast, lunch and dinner. They were not making me sick. This summer tomatoes upset my digestive system. I kept eating them for a while but it got so bad and was so tied to tomatoes, that I stopped eating them. I remember thinking 2009 summer that tomatoes were making me sick but I thought it was from cutting bad places off and eating the good part. This fall I picked all my tomatoes and some of the green ones. I thought it is my last shot, I will get sick but I am going to eat tomatoes before winter. They didn't make me sick. I think it is either the stinkbugs or Thuracide that I sprayed that is making me sick. The stinkbugs have been gone for a while and I stopped spraying in late summer. Next year I will have to do an experiment.

Well, it was definitely an ah-ha but not in 2010. More like 2007.

I've lived here again since 2005 and for a couple years I toted birdhouses and decorative stuff back to the garage for the winter. That was a real pain because I have a lot of yard things and I want to keep them in good shape.

In the early winter of 2007 I thought I would just put a large plastic bin in each area (patio, hosta bed, west Sun & Stars yard, etc.) and put my decorative things and birdhouses in that. And I tarp or cover with contractor bags all my outdoor chairs and benches. No more dragging them around. I even store my hoses under the tarps on the benches. Most of the bins are brown or green and they aren't even noticed. When spring arrives, I just put stuff back out and store the bins in the garage. I have even used that storage for the screened porch things, out of sight. So I have five main garden areas and five bins.

Saves a bunch of running around. BTW, the bins have never leaked nor have I had a lid blow off.

horseradish: My farm is certified organic. Certified organic seed must be used in certified organic crop production. The only exception occurs when there is NO certified organic seed available for a specific crop you wish to produce--and telephone/computer records must be kept to show that a diligent effort was made to locate organic seed. When certified organic seed cannot be located, untreated conventional seed may be used--if this, somehow, could be construed as a "loophole". I have not read the link that cindylouwho provided for growing organic seed, but it's pretty much as she relates in her "ah-ha" moment. Seed is a crop grown by/for seed companies to sell. Of course, the obvious principle involved is this: if the seed crop itself is tainted by chemicals, pesticides, etc., (and of course, conventional seed IS), how can it be a part of an organic program--which is designed to reduce and (hopefully) eliminate the use of chemicals and pesticides? The conscientious and diligent production of (certified) organic seed should be the first step in the production of a (certified) organic crop. I parenthesize the word "certified", since a truly organic crop is a truly organic crop, whether certified so, or not. pnbrown: I certainly don't relate this to correct you in any way, but for your own information: for diversity's sake, seed should be taken from a number of tomatoes, then mixed. I believe the norm is 10 or 12.

What was your most embarassing moment in the garden?

1. We have a pack of cats (8) that terrorize almost anything that moves. Voles, gophers, mice, rats, bats, small rabbits, birds (unfortunately) etc. Sometimes they do "catch and release" after bringing them into the house for presentation and admiration. So one night last summer after a long day of working in the yard we both fell into bed and disturbed an already very irritated gopher snake. Yes, levitation is more than a theory. Meanwhile Mist (our mighty hunter) is looking at the commotion with an "Is there a problem? Seemed like a perfectly good place to stash a snake" expression. . . Cat and snake went out separate doors. 2. Another hornet story. Last week while trying to reclaim a very overgrown bed I bumped a huge hornet nest and they all came straight up. Multiple stings as I sprinted for the house shedding clothes as I ran, but one got me on my eyelid. My eye is now deep purple and swollen and DH is spending a lot of time protesting "Honest, I didn't do it." :-) 3. We have raccoons at the Bellingham house. A family (Mom, two babies and two teenagers from last year) have set up housekeeping in an old garden shed and see no good reason to leave anytime soon (sigh). We were in the hot tub late one night with a large bowl of strawberries set on the deck behind us. DH, without looking, reached back to get one and encountered something furry and hissing. He did a turn worthy of an Olympic medal and discovered Mom and babies helping themselves. I, being the supportive DW that I am :-), was laughing myself silly. Given that they were in complete possession of the strawberries and the babies were whisker deep in the chocolate we moved to the other end of the tub and watched their midnight feast (with DH muttering about pushy wildlife). They finished everything, calmly washed their paws in the tub and continued on with their evening. . .

Explored the forum further and found ......a wealth of gorgeous plants, took enough names to blunt my pencil, and learned a LOT. But now I see that it will be impossible to entertain thoughts of having a big yard full of hosta. I am in awe of the work put into creating the beautiful places you toured. My Ah-Ha moment came when I realized that I really don't have to shred my leaves to get useable leaf mold/mulch by the next season. After 3 years of doing the never-ending, back-breaking task of feeding that shredder handfuls of leaves at a time (it gets clogged if you put in too many at once), I just didn't have time to do it last fall. So, we raked them into a (albeit, HUGE) pile, and decided to deal with it later. Surprisingly, they composted down very well, and I was able to use every last bit of them, leaving a nice empty space for this year's pile! I can think of SO many things I'd rather be doing than shredding leaves, so it worked out great for me!! Karen

Helen, that is interesting about the tomatoes. I would almost bet it isn't the stink bugs but the other product.

No real ah ha moment here but I did realize that I should never plant very tall corn on the east side of anything......the sun didn't hit them until noon or so. I should have known better but missed this in the new orchard garden.
