The week is half over, but thought I would try again to get some response.

Ceresone, where are you? Christie, and all others!!

We spent yesterday beginning work on cleaning up the pole barn . What a job, had to pull screw nails out of three sheets of 16-foot roofing, actually pulling it through the roofing. Maybe if we work a couple of hours each day we can get it done before the Christmas holidays....grandkids played all over it on Thanksgiving!

So far on catalogs: Pinetree and Miller (a few other supply ones, but I don't count those and they go directly into the trash can).

I have up about a half flat of seedling daylilies up under the lights on the back porch. I want to try some lettuce seeds out there. It stays pretty cool so should be ok.

We got about 1/2 inch of rain last week and it was badly needed.

I'm still here. I've just been busy remodeling my kitchen. Wishing it was already done. I need to be getting ready for Christmas instead.

That looks like a job Gld! Hope your back is in better shape than mine.

A question - Will Round-Up work this time of year on winter weeds?

Well, I'm glad I didn't post this morning, the mail brought Vermont Bean, and Gurneys--I was feeling deprived!!
Seems the first catalogs get the orders here. I need carrots, snap peas (going to try)Sweet corn, Moon and Stars melon, Lettuce mix, radish mix,Cauliflower (dont laugh, William, going to try colors again)Kale, Potatoes, also Sw. Pot. and onions Plus 2 apples and 18 raspberries.
Everything else I have, plus put quite a bit in freezer storage (seeds)
Tomatoes I'm going to plant Ananas Noire, Curo De Turo, Pineapple,(or Mr. Stripey) for canning, Opalaka, Stripe Roman and perhaps Amish Paste, toss up on the last one.
I sprinkled cottenseed meal over my garden leaves, hoping to speed them up composting. Cant convince Hubby to try what Compost forum advises!
Haven't decided on the hoop trellis this year, long end of my garden is panels, so I may just put climbers there. Except for my tomatoes and cucumbers.
My, Glenda, your barn is a mess, but still, you were lucky. I hate pulling nails, but worse yet,I hate saving them!!My BIL used to save every bent nail, cans and cans of them.
Christie, I think for Roundup to do a good job, the plant has to be growing, dont know if they're still growing enough to transmit it to the roots.
Lets hope for a mild winter, everyone, bugs might be bad next year, but maybe can keep my horses fat!!

The shelves.... We originally wanted a 30" x 12" niche but when we opened up the wall, there was a septic vent smack in the middle. We decided on 2 niches instead, I wassn't about to mess around with those pipes. When figuring the tile layout for the design I wanted, our friend suggested that we oversize the niches so the tile would lay out nice - he suggested 18 x 18 niches and I freaked. But the 12x12 would not have been big enough for the 3 kids and all their stuff. He suggested a granite shelf on the bottom and then one above it to make a shelf for soap, razors, etc. We talked about the length and width of the shelves, but never the depth. When I picked up the shelves from the granite fabricator, I freaked - they were 1 1/4" thick just like the countertop was being made. Friend said, don't worry, they would be perfect. They are. I honestly wouldn't want them any thinner. When he laid the tile, the bottom shelf slid in tightly and then he cut the bullnose on the side and the back tiles so the top granite shelf sits on the cut tiles all around. The tiles abouve the top shelf are full 6 x 6 and as you can see, we have enough height for those huge oversized shampoo and conditioner bottles. There is kerdi behind so no worries about water issues and they were all caulked and all afterwards. Being the over-emotional one, I figured this design that had been in head my for 2 years was ruined when I saw how thick those shelves were, but I wouldn't want them any different. I think they 'fit' the design perfectly as is. And I just love the niches. Before, the kids had a tiny corner shelf and bottles were all over the place, now there is enough room for everything plus space for guests when they are here.

Jas, very carefully! That is filled so tight... with so little walking space... but she does have a long wand sprayer/waterer... and uses it daily on some plants, like the ferns, and multiple times a week on others, and once weekly for cati. All summer long she spends about 3 hours watering just the potted stuff alone. But both her and her hubby LOVE it all. You saw the yard earlier... it's just AWESOME, even during the drought we had this year. Moni PS, the cacti are actually Bill's babies.

Aaaackk! I'm so far behind I don't know how I can catch up, but I'll try. And, technically, this is a new month and a new week but I want to finish this thread before I start the new one. Bruce, It definitely is encroachment of a major type. Frisco and all the surrounding areas have grown, and continue to grow, exponentially. We drive down some of the roads mentioned in the coyote area occasionally, and they were country roads not too long ago and are city roads now. The development is occurring at such a breakneck pace that one of the things I tend to say to Tim every time we drive through there is ""where's all the wildlife being pushed away into?....what's left for them now?" Amy, It is alright. You've been through a lot recently and I am sure you have a lot on your mind. Now that you've found this thread, I'll go start the new one for this week in a few minutes. Regarding the chickens? We've had ferrets, weasels and ringtailed cats all get into coops we thought were secure, so maybe you have one or more of those sneaky beasties around? The first two, in particular, can squeeze through fences and through tiny openings. Congrats on the contract on your dad's condo. That happened fairly quickly all things considered. I know you'll be glad when you can cross the condo off your list of things you have to worry about. Nancy, The beautiful weather sounds nice. All too soon it will be icky again, either cold or snowy or windy or icy or some combination thereof. Today was only 56 degrees so warm but neither too hot or cold. All the wind the last two or three days brought down most of the leaves left on the trees, so we look really wintery now and even the last remaining red oaks in the neighborhood have lost their red and gone brown or naked now. It definitely looks wintery and I sure miss the green foliage. Fruitcake is an acquired taste. My dad made it as did several of my uncles, but I never acquired a taste for it. Early in our marriage I made one. I have no idea why. I wonder what I was thinking? Maybe I thought that making a Christmas fruitcake was a southern/family tradition I should carry on into my adult life? Nope, nope, nope. It wasn't worth the bother, we didn't even eat it, and I never made one again. If I wanted a fruit cake (and I don't) I'd order this one from Corsicana's Collin Streat bakery that ships tons of them annually: Deluxe Fruitcake A lot of people in Texas, in particular, consider this the ideal fruitcake, perhaps because a lot of it is not fruit---it is pecans. They sell about 3 million pounds of fruitcakes per year (mostly at this time of the year) and ship to at least 195 countries, in addition to the USA. In this particular case, even though I love to bake, I feel like they make a much better fruitcake than I ever could or would or have. Rebecca, I am not even sure my dad and his family members really liked fruitcake, but I guess it was a tradition from their relatively poor youth so they kept making it and eating it....despite not really liking it. I think maybe it is because their parents loved it and they lost their parents really young, so perhaps they clung to the fruitcake tradition as a way of hanging on to their memories of their parents. Larry, It is really kind of you to provide some entertainment for the cows. I know there must be some really good fruitcakes, but most of the ones I've eaten would not have been labeled as good in any shape, form or fashion, which is a shame considering how much work goes into making one. It also is tiring to try to chase down all the ingredients. I've noticed the last two or three years that a lot of the candied fruit type stuff that goes into them isn't even sold in local stores any more. Kim, I bought the Whole Seed Catalog at Sam's Club the first couple of years but it wasn't that special, other than just for reading it to pass the time, and I stopped spending money on it. Jen, I don't know of any way to tell the good seeds from the bad ones when they all look the same at the time you harvest and dry them. About the only thing you could do would be to run a germination test by sowing 10 or 20 of them on a wet paper towel or coffee filter and putting it in a ziplock bag. Check daily to see how many germinate. That at least would give you an idea of what percentage of the seeds you've saved will be viable. Keep in mind if the original plants were hybrids, their offpsring likely will not come true from saved seed. Jennifer, I hope your long day on Saturday went well and that you've spent today resting and recovering. Amy, I was watching the weather when the tornadoes spun up and was horrified when they started issuing Tornado Warnings for a "Particularly Dangerous Situation" type tornado emergency. It looks like it was horrible in the areas hit, but also seems like injuries were minimal and no one died. Why can't we have normal weather here? Tornadoes at the end of November are not unheard of but also not terribly common. We had some very strong wind gusts (likely in the 50s) as our severe tstorms roared through, but no real damage here. Some people in our county had portable structures, like sheds and carports, flipped or destroyed and trees damaged and power lines down and such, but I think it all was straight line wind damage and no twisties here. We got less that 0.20" of rain out of it, but I'm so relieved to not have mud any more that I'm not complaining. Rebecca, I hope y'all found a Christmas tree that was up to your standards. We bought a terrific and beautiful pre-lit one several years ago and I love it. I believe we got it at Lowe's. When I looked at the trees they have this year, none of them were anywhere close to it in quality though. It seems like everything we buy anymore just keeps being made more and more cheaply, although prices continue to go up. We had the girls this weekend and had lots of holiday fun, but I am exhausted and ready for the new week so I can catch up on my rest a little bit, Good-bye November! Dawn

@Funkyart - I really don't know a lot about fasting. There is some conflicting info about it - as with all diet methods I think. What I did though was more one meal a day I guess. I was going to fast all day Friday, but I forgot I had a trainer workout. So, after that, around 11:00 am, I ate about 30 grams of protein in case I needed it for muscle recovery, and then fasted until 11:00 am Saturday. I just had plain water, and water with electrolytes. Tuesday I had a bagel for breakfast, then a 4 hour drive where I snacked on chips and a snack mix, so I decided I should fast again! So, I just stopped eating around 3 until Wednesday at 3. I'm not sure how often I'll try this. But every so often just to get myself back on track seems like a good idea for me personally. I'm not wearing a CGM right now, but the day after my fast last week was the most steady blood sugar day I'd had in awhile. I try to eat 3 meals a day, because otherwise how can I get all my food requirements and nutrients in? So, this is in contrast to that. It's a balance for sure! I see bone broth recommended a lot for fasting. I know my blood sugars are ok, so I just try to stay well hydrated. It does help me get in my water goal - drink instead of eat. I have read if you get a headache, you might need salt or electrolytes, so bone broth would be good for that. I had to put a little post it on the pantry to remind me not to eat nuts - mindless snacking can be a problem for me.

that must be the clean up from the bad storm you had. good luck.

made three leaf bins today from wire to compost leaves in. am brewing some compost and black strap molasses tonight and tomorrow to put on the leaves to try and help speed up decomposition. going to try ammonium nitrate on one and the home brew on the other.

need very few seeds for spring. i do need cherokee purple, wenks yellow hots, german red strawberry [ wrong seeds from supplier last yr ]and maybe a couple more.

back to the sawmill tomorrow and think i am going to use black locust for my straw bale beds.

one armadillo is down for the count. a drop of lead in the ear works every time.

Christie, I've read on another forum about the disaster that preceded your kitchen remodeling. Very scary situation and could have been much worse. It seems to be taking a long time for repairs but I admit I've never been involved in a kitchen remodeling. Will it be done by Christmas? My sister just had her cabinets painted inside and out and she hated every minute of it.

Gldno, what happened to your pole barn. You've probably talked about it here but I've forgotten.

I'm impressed with the enthusiasm with which some of you are discussing next years garden. I was thoroughly sick of gardening by the end of August. I told myself I was going to cut the size of my vegetable garden by 2/3 and plant shrubs in my perrenial beds to reduce maintainence there. I have planted several shrubs but I may not shrink my veggie garden. There are just so many things I love to grow and my enthusiasm seems to be making a comeback. I may turn a big part of it into a pumpkin patch. I carve the grandkids name into the pumpkins when they are very small and as the pumpkin grows, the name gets bigger and calluses over. I think I enjoy it as much as the kids. I wonder if pumpkin vines would supress bermuda grass? It has taken over a corner of the garden in spite of my best efforts.

William, I laughed at your astray in yellville sign off. Just don't stray too far.

Christie, I thought I responded about the herbicide, but it went into cyberland. I agree with Ceresone, plant must be growing and the stuff is too expensive to take a chance imo.

We remodeled the kitchen in 2004. Good luck with it and I hope it is done by Christmas.

William you and Ceresone are revving up my gardening enthusiasm again. I was definitely planning to cut back ala Anise. I still will be cutting back on perennial beds and using more shrubs and grasses.

BTW, the barn was torn down by a tornado that just dipped down on our farm and the neighbors and back up and disappeared. Between the ice storm and it, we have had lots of $$$$$$ of repairs and replacement of electronics.

Yesterday was spent shopping so nothing outside got done. Hope we can get back out this afternoon.

Not too much happening here in Mtn. Home. I was bored, so I started a blog, but I can't seem to get it listed here... I'm slowly getting the greenhouse under way - got the perimeter dug up, and started hewing cedar logs for the frame. Been watching the cover crops grow...

Gld - My weeds sure LOOK like they're growing. I'll wait for a warm sunny day and see what happens when I drench them.

Anise - We were supposed to be finished remodeling by Christmas but may not be. I've decided not to care one way or the other. lol Glad I didn't schedule a big family reunion at my house for Christmas this year. That would've been so stressful trying to get it all done in time.

Seriously, good luck with the cleanup and watch out for nails, rusty or not.
I saw my first tornado when very young, near Mtn. View (ARK). It cleaned off the top of a mtn west of us and was overhead when it passed us, all crouched in the root cellar.

Cristie... I've been through the kitchen remod scenario, in 2003, due to a small fire in the basement that did a lot of structural damage to the 1st level floor.
It started badly, as the person who did the measurements, made several mistakes and we wound up with cabinets that were wrong size. The delivery people refused to set the cabinets in the kitchen, they were going to leave them on the porch(uncovered). I immediately called to cancel the job. They then had second thoughts and put them in the kitchen. Installation crew came to install them. Don't know why I did, but I asked what they we going to charge. It was double the estimate! They were not allowed to start the job and I wound up doing the entire installation myself. Having to wait on new cabinets, to replace wrong ones ordered, really extended the time. I began to think I would never finish.
Good luck! and be very cautious working with all of that splintered wood, sheet metal and nails!

Another pretty cool and very windy day here. So............I decided to make bagels instead of doing anything outside.

Got my Fine Gardening magazine yesterday and have already read it. Sometimes very good and sometimes not.

Catalogs: McClure and Zimmerman, Totally Tomatoes, and Seymour's Selected Seed.

Rb, I would have to go back and take a look. Granddaughter took the picture. It is probably supported by a bale of hay.
We were so busy working just outside of the lot that I didn't pay much attention to inside it. We are now behind three days working on it! Oh well, best laid plans, etc.

beautiful day here today. low 44 this morning and about 63 high. cut rocks, grass and bagged leaves for 3 hrs. got my leaf bins finished and one has ammonia nitrate and the other has been soaked with molasses, compost and alfalfa tea that has been aerated.

if the weather is as nice tomorrow, off to the white river for some trout fishing.

another armadillo bit the dust today.

brewing lots more alfalfa tea!!!!!!!!!!!
