Anyone grow bunch grapes in central FL?
Comments (5)FWIW, I have a Daytona & boy! is it ever vigorous - I rarely fertilise or even prune - it's on its own. Sadly tho, possums stripped all the fruit this year before it was even ripe = ( It is a seeded pink variety from a cross w/ muscadines, I believe, so the skins are thicker & puckerish when raw, but flesh is oh-so-sweet when ripe & the skin slips off easily. They don't have that distinctive muscadine flavour either. I use them more for cooking than fresh eating (pies, fruit crisps, etc.) - the skins aren't bitter when cooked. HTH...See MoreHas anyone else come across Mustang Grapes?
Comments (2)Make sure and wear rubber gloves when you go to remove the skins. They are that acidic. They do make good jelly, but unlike muscadines cannot be eaten fresh....See MoreAnyone grow Oregon Grape (Mahonia aquifolium) in z5?
Comments (11)As I stated previously, it is one of the Asian species or a hybrid thereof. And I don't know what you mean by "less horrible"..........no mahonia is necesarily 'horrible' :-) Some may be invasive under certain circumstances or in certain locations and none are grown specifically for their fruit, which has little appeal to anyone other than wildlife, but I would hardly define either of these attribute as 'horrible'! btw, I would not consider anything coming from The Spruce as "authoritative". It is a lifestyle website (formerly known as About.com) that employes all manner of writers for their various articles, some very knowledgeable and others not so much. Inaccuracies, wrong information and misidentifcations are common. If you want something authoritative on plants or gardening, stick with the .edu websites or those that focus only on plants and gardening like MOBOT or Monrovia or The Morton Aboretum, etc. And even those are not a 100% guarantee of accuracy or up to date info....See MoreAnyone here practice girdling trunks or limbs on Citrus (like grapes)
Comments (3)Kumquat skin is of a set thickness so any increase in diameter increases the volume of flesh much faster than the volume of skin. Not good. This holds true to a much greater degree for calamondins in that the flesh is inedible. "my opinion" I think the use of girdling for grapes, kiwis, and other vine fruits is great. You will starve the roots on citrus trees before new growth can compensate with enough leaves to feed the roots with enough food to push for a new crop next year.. I do not have a tree big enough yet to experiment with. Perhaps in a few years I will try this on my NZL. Thanks for sharing. I found this topic quite interesting Steve...See MoreOkiedawn OK Zone 7
