Bug Harvest

Well, you've came to expect the unexpected from me-and I didnt want to disappoint you.

My Chinese Cabbage beat all expectations this year, and after my DIL and I harvested all we wanted, there were still half a bed. By leaving them so long, the bugs were having a party for everyone they knew.

So, I had a bright idea, I double-bagged each head, bugs and all, put them in a large bag-and into the freezer (one I dont use much) I think my chickens will really appreciate the greens-and bugs-when the snow and ice are outside, and they have to stay inside.

Now, lets hope I dont get down, and someone else does the cooking!!

lol What a surprise someone would get if they looked in your freezer! That's a very smart idea though and your chickens could use the extra protein in the winter. Who knows - maybe feed stores will sell frozen Japanese Beetles someday.
I've never grown Chinese Cabbage. Can you give a review on that? What did you make with them? Wal-Mart sells eggroll wraps in a package and I bought some of those once to make my own eggrolls but I used regular cabbage. I thought they were good but I'm the only one in my family that likes them so I haven't made them again.

I can't remember where I saw this, but there is a marvelous YouTube video around about using diatomaceous earth to deal with stink bugs. Yes, everyone says to use it, but they don't really say how! What you do is get your shop vac out, and connect the hose to the output, so you use it as a blower. Then mist the tomatoes. Now grab a handful of DE and, while standing in front of the tomatoes, blow the DE all over them. It sticks! My understanding is that this *completely* removes the stink bug problem. Yes, rinse off the harvested tomatoes before you eat them. This treatment needs to be done just every few weeks (unless it rains hard.) I had a bad problem with stink bugs and tomatoes last year, before I heard about this strategy. I was picking and vacuuming until I was blue in the face. I've been prepared to use this strategy, but haven't yet seen a single stink bug.

ants, aphids, and good bug or bad bug?

Cindy, the only time we have any significant ants in the garden is when we have the aphids. We've been able to knock the aphids back by using Neem. Doesn't get rid of them altogether but keeps that at bay enough where we can harvest something. And like you, it's only on the Purplehull's even though the Blackeyes are planted right next to them along the trellis. I mentioned your situation to DH the other night and I had wondered if they might be attracted to the color but they show up when the pods are still green so that's not it. We're not planting any Cowpeas this fall because I'm tired of the aphids. :/ TimeTraveler - I'm just over the bridge from you and I think I've seen those green bugs in our garden as well. I just thought they were juvenile Stink Bugs. We have nothing out there right now but two small pepper plants so I'll have to keep my eye out next season and hopefully it will be identified by then.

There are a few true bug nymphs that match up with yours, but I'm thinking that the Leaf-footed bug is probably your culprit. See what you think. By the way, it is not unusual at all for someone to mistake them for ants. Here is a link that might be useful:
