strange looking plant

Folks...

I saw this plant today, growing in someone's backyard along a busy street. It had tall woody-looking trunks, several of them, not too many leaves toward the bottom, and sparse quite large oval leaves further up the trunks. The trunks weren't very large, perhaps as big around as a broomstick. But what caught my eye were the blooms. Very large yellow/gold trumpet-shaped blossoms that were about 10" to 12" in length and hung straight down. Generally I can identify something growing but this lovely plant has me stumped. Does anyone have any idea what it was I saw?

The plant you saw was Brugmansia.

Well, goodness, I want to thank you very much for helping me out on identifying that plant. Hope folks don't think I'm a dummy for never having seen one of these brugmansias before, but I guess there's a first time for everything, right? Went to the forum you suggested and I must say they certainly come in all different forms. I'd like to try them but first want to study up on them.

I have had Euphorbia sap in my eyes after doing some cutting and then (stupidly) rubbing my eyes. Although I did not go blind, I couldn't see well, and it was certainly the most irritating physical experience in my life. It felt as though someone was jabbing my eyes with an ice pick. This lasted about 2 days. My eyes dried out from too many tears, and I had to flush them every few minutes the whole time. Needless to say I didn't get a "wink" of sleep during the ordeal. When handling any Euphorbia, it's best to wear disposable gloves and wash thoroughly before touching anything else. I learned this the hard way. Now you don't have to go through the same thing.

The leaves don't look familiar but the papery things look like tomatillos or Chinese Lantern. Tomatillos like to pop up in compost piles- just not sure about those leaves.

Where in Arkansas are you relocating. May be able to get you some Brug cuttings. I have many that are going to have to come in or die for the winter.

Well, thank you kindly for your offer of some cuttings. We have aready relocated to the Ft. Smith area over a year ago
(sorry I should update my profile I guess). Started a big project on the house today, pressure-blasting all of the old
(and I mean OLD) paint off. So, any gardening has to take a
back seat to the work ahead. We knew this work would have to
be done when we moved in, so we held back on planting around the house itself. Come spring, we'll practically be starting from scratch, garden-wise. This old house has good "bones" and I regard the semi-barren yard as a fresh canvas. All sorts of challenges, wouldn't you say?

I have two large plants that have wintered outdoors for three years. I kept them in the house one winter and they were infested with spider mites so bad that I decided to let them die if they couldn't survive outdoors. I mulch heavily though. I do worry about my animals eating the leaves. I wouldn't have them if I had small children around. I had wire around them earlier, but they have grown over it and leaves have poked through. There is wild Jimson weed around and I've never had a problem with animals eating it, but it does concern me.

They are poisonous but they taste so bad that children could not eat enough to worry about. Animals know what is OK or not to eat. There are more common plants that are more harmful than these and are probably already around you house.

BeerHog~ It is good to meet you at Jays. I have one little Burg where I bought it at my hometown greenhouse. I am planned to bring it back indoor for winter. When will I start to feed it fertilizer? What do you use fertilizer? I think it will go dormation, spelling? (sleep) for winter. Thanks.. kat

The ones I bring in are just left in a cool low light area of my house and barely watered all winter. I bring out in the spring and begin watering. After leaves start growing, then start feeding. Most of mine are planted in the ground and mulched and left out all winter. Any all-purpose fertilizer will be good.
