Good News..Bad News!

Good news....the new greenhouse is up and I'm filling it pretty fast. Bad news...2 greenhouse and adding wholesale clients,I'm going to have to let a bunch of my flowerbeds go back to lawn since time before was short on getting all tended next year will be worst. I trust NO one to tend my flowers and just barely trust anyone else to mow.Most will be shorten drastically,planted mainly with shurbs and flowering trees with underplantings of splashes of color from a few perennials and annuals.Other will be deleted completely. *SIGH* Why can't I be cloned?

I know you said you don't trust anyone to work around your flower beds, but what about hiring someone in 4H or taking an ag class at school or a college student majoring in ag or horticulture? Just a thought.

Congrats on your good news. Will this be your first year for wholesale?
You sound soooo busy. Maybe you can declare yourself a college of horticulture and have students pay you to tend your greenhouse plants. lol

What species is pumpkin ash? I've had tree work done 3 times in the 10 years I've lived here. I enjoy pruning woody plants, but unfortunately, mature trees are too big and dangerous to prune. If I could, I would snap my fingers and take this branch off here and move that tree over there. I prune them in my mind all the time!! LOL So instead the tree service owned by a friend comes with all his trucks and even though he is very reasonable it has cost me about 4 grand total over the years. My tree guy hasn't lacked for work around here though - he's been flat out since tropical storm Irene went through here last August - followed by that crazy October snow-storm and both resulted in extensive damage and power outages caused by downed limbs and trees.

You're going to have more trouble than the birds are. Birds are immune to the effects of capsaicin, unlike mammals (I figured out that the squirrel digging in my potted peppers was burying nuts in the nice soft dirt, he didn't nibble. But the turkeys were eating the peppers in the garden til I put the deer netting we'd taken down for Irene back up.). In fact, they often include dried chiles in parrot mixes. Too bad for your friend, though.

Can you try to intervene? (Not in the aunt part--that's a done deal! LOL! Congrats! 21 nieces and nephews? WOW!) I recall that when I was in college, during the patchwork of financial aid, a few hundred bucks came from part of an alum's endowment. Maybe you can check with the financial aid office to see if there are any "specialty" accounts that could be tapped to help cover next semester? (Or get an advance on the next semester's financial aid?)

No, I don't think I solved anything, but I do think the suggestion of pulling the grass away from the tree is helpful, it was a mat of dead wet grass right up against it and the one side of the trunk base (the north side) had some green algae. I had some copper fungus spray I had just bought and sprayed that on the green and today the green is gone! when I pulled up the grass on the ground I was able to see some of the tree's thick roots so letting it breath a little more will hopefully be good while we head into our rainy season. (it has rained twice today). I I am not going to put any mulch down now since I am trying to see if letting the ground breath and dry more is helpful plus with it being summer I think trying to get rid of the grass by hand would be a losing battle, I'll keep raking the area trying to get a little more dirt away from the base and then in the winter I can put down newspaper and mulch, just hope we don't have a wet winter like last year.

I've done a little wholesaling to two places this year,that the reason I can see already how busy I'll be when I hope to add apx.3 more small garden centers plus I'll still be doing retail.

College? Geesh,I'd have to go and finish high school then college and I'd probably have to have PHDs, bachelor degrees and all kinds of stuff....oooo no! I'm too old and brain shrinking...no space for all that....LOL

Been having 'puter problems since last Wed. Never fails when I post a sase giveaway in the seed exchange and get tons of responses.

Yeah,gotta stay lively to keep up with two greenhouse and another 2500-3000 sq.ft. of shrub and tree inventory.

Dont call it a college--just say you're giving classes-lol. i wish you were closer, i'd definetly attend- and i bet this brain is older than yours.i'd like to get a small greenhouse, just for my own use.
have you heard about the "hoop houses"? one man near here has one, havent seen it, but heard about it.

Next spring I'll be teaching my garden club how to propagate maybe I can sneak some of my work load in on them....LOL.
