Aerogrow seed starter

I got an aerogrow hydroponic seed starter from my dear wife and I must say it is an amazing thing. I love palms as starting palm seedlings require nothing less than a heat matt and patience. For those of you who dont know what this thingy is, it is an indoor seed starter/mini garden that basically does everything for you, which for me is bliss. You can grow fresh herbs/flowers all year indoors. Comes with a grow light and everything. Because I live in Canada I go crazy over the winter! I put the basic seed starter set (which consists of Italian herbs)on Sunday and yesterday I noticed some have already sprouted. I can't wait to try starting seeds for some exotic tropicals. Not sure if this thing would work on palm seeds or not...Has anyone else used this product?

Have not seen it or tried,sorry pro,I guess us bloody americans are not interested in talking about sprouting seeds right now!sounds like it would be great for starting almost any seeds esp palms,don't plant your self out of the house just yet,its got to warm up sometime though,arg its cold here!Good luck with your seeds-

Thanks Jimhardy! It is REALLY cold here too. Dealing with an Arctic air mass that is making want to run to the sunny south! I ordered some fairly rare banana seeds (Thai rock banana) and will try germinating with my new gadget. I have sooo many palm seeds that I just started and am waiting to germinate. So far I have caryota mitis (as well as the dwarf form wal densiflora), norfolk palms, betel nuts, medjool dates, carpentarias etc. Already potted up some kings and accai palms that I grew in November. Should have a nice crop to deal with in the spring!

No, but I wouldn't bother. Purchasing the seed and a large bale of peat moss will cover far more area much cheaper.

I am using it this year also on my renovation. I think it works well as a mulch, and the inclusion of the starter fert is a plus. But I bought it because it seemed so convenient to be able to spread it with a spreader, and it turns out that many, many passes with the spreader are required to get decent coverage, at least with my speedygreen 3000. So much for the convenience factor, though I am still pleased with it as a mulch. But I'm not confident that any mulch can offset having to water only every other day, you may need another plan to deal with that.

Safyre--sometimes it is better to start a new thread rather than adding onto an old one. As for your question, it really would help to know what plants you're talking about. (As to the OP where how many seeds really depend on the plant). Are you talking transplanting into pots indoors, or into a garden. Since Houzz got rid of zone info, where are you at? I'm in Denver, so starting seeds now would mean I can't transplant out until April/May at the general earliest (my veg garden is just in plans right now for seed starting soon). But I have lots of pots indoors for the winter. All are different--I have some newly sprouted chives that I seeded directly into their pots. But I won't start my basil for another month or so, because it shouldn't go out until end of May due to our night temps here.

I always hear about how peppers need to be dry and in hot weather to make them spicy-hot, but Im not sure how true this is. I immagine it has more to do with the macro and micro nutrients provided to the plant. The reason I mention this is my lemon drops were grown indoors at comfortable "air-conditioned" tempratures, in hydroponic nutrient (which is almost all water) and my lemon drops are plenty hot. The amount of light will affect the size of the pods though. My first harvest had huge peppers (the plants were smaller and still fit under the light hood pretty well. They are also supplimented by sunlight through the window. Each harvest after that as the plants got bigger and sticking out from under the hood (no longer getting direct light, the pods were smaller. I think they would go back up in size with full sunlight. Anyway, back on topic here, you can germinate the seeds, and transplant them if you dont want to grow them in your aerogarden completely. Be careful not to damage the fragile plants though, and if you are super careful, you may even be able to reuse the sponge.

Sounds great!I hope they sprout assembly line style,(seeds,sprouts,trees,seeds sprouts,trees,etc,etc!)it would be fun to have a way to get quick results

topher2006: I think you will enjoy this thing. It is kind of pricey for a toy, but at least the frustration of sprouting seeds will be kept to a minimum!

Just got mine I sure like the look of it ! I'm confident this will sprout palm seed faster.
