That is pretty cool. We are having a strange winter but I am a little north of you. You must be having a mild winter there.

royalpaulm that's good how is your palm looking after the cool days of November? I have one that yellows up every year and worse on years when were below average on temps. I have another one that hardly ever yellows.The coconuts are getting big now on my biggest one.

You know David you make another good point as to why California coconuts are very rare.When they are planted-it's just one,and very young. I wonder if I had a few to play with-would one really take?..for example,I'm wondering if it's better to plant young ones in marginal climates in light shade? the canopy edge of other tree's to protect them,then in spring and summer hope they grow into full sun. Coconuts outdoors in a med climate might not like full sun and our dry air until they get some size-Just as Howeas behave. Two cents.

David: November was sure a month of change. Our official low so far this season has been 42 (December) which has hurt my coconut too. Although the lower fronds yellowed and later browned, growth still continues. The flowers that started emerging in August continue to grow and open, just very slowly mind you. It's been high 70s low 80s past couple weeks, but cold nights are forecasted ahead with temps down to upper 40s.

Stanofh: I think in Calif, whether North Cal or South Cal, a coconut would do terrible. The nights, and days for that matter, are far to cool to support their tropical requirements. They hate days where the highs are only 60s and nights drop to 30s and 40s. Not to mention coconuts LOVE humidity. My average January temp here is 72/50 and I have one of just a few dozen coconuts I've seen in the area. Long term survival will be a whole other issue. But you can't ignore the PCH coconut in Newport Beach, CA...that at least gives SoCal some hope.

Hey, Nice coconut tree, doesnt look too bad. What do you do when you do get a freeze? (cover it up) I livein Citrus County, and i have a coconut palm tree that has about 4ft of wood that threw out nuts, they got your size and feel off, It been in the ground 2 years,and still alive, really only coverd it up last year, di get frost bite good, but managed to come back, it has frost bit now, from the last freeze we had(month or so ago, and its still green(didnt cover it up) I could take some pics of it, and show you, but it looks ugly. But amazingly its still green i nthe middle.

royalpaulm it still looks good. I have noticed if I don't feed heavy with minors right before the cool weather my big one turns ugly. Hopefully yours wont drop its nuts but if it does you will get more soon.

I fertilized the other day, hopefully that will help some. I really hope the coconuts do hang on, it adds a nice tropical flare to the yard.

But the cold weather has arrived, down to 46 last night and only 71 today for the high. Just when I was getting used to the 80s again...

Hey guys don't fret too much about the occasional cool day and cold night. In Harlingen, TX, where the normal high and low for January is 68/49, I have seen green Malayans with about 5-7 ft. of wood and about 18ft. tall overall height and one last summer had a pretty big coconut about eight inches long growing on it! In Brownsville, I have seen 30ft. tall overall height Mexican Talls, and on South Padre Island, there is a Mexican Tall that the last time I was there in December, it had 47 coconuts total on it! Most were small to medium size, but about 4 or 5 of them were in the 8-9 inch range and will probably be about 10 inches by the time they ripen. Anyway, the Valley has some cool days, with highs in the upper 40's to lower 50's occasionally, and some nights in the 30's occasionally, and the coconut palms still grow and even fruit there. The problem is when you have prolonged periods of about 5 days or more when the temps are really cool, as is often the case this time of year in Southern California, and also when you have a hard freeze. Coconut palms can take the occasional cool day or two and even the occasional light freeze, but they can't take prolonged cool weather or hard freezes below about 27F, especially when they are young.
