Has anyone seen coconut palms for sale in north florida or on I95

I am going to North Florida to visit family next week and hope to pick up a coconut palm somewhere while there. I have tried in the past and have never succeeded in finding one.

Does anyone know where I can find one either somewhere on I-95 in the carolinas or in georgia, or on I-10 between jacksonville and lake city?

Yes I know the challenges associated with a coconut palm and am willing to risk it. I have a Majesty Palm, lemon, key lime, grapefruit, pineapples and papaya all planted in the ground and very much alive (even flowering) thanks to some extraordinary efforts, so I hope a coconut would survive too.

In the ground? Wow, I must admit I never heard anything like it in a zone 8, but I would never discourage it. Temps really should be in the 80s and humidity has to be pretty high (but not too high) night temps consistently below 50F will slow it down and make it just stop growing. One freezing temp and you can say goodbye especially if it doesnt get warm very quickly after. i have heard that during the winter even in areas like miami they grow very slow (no cold damage, just slow growth) and they dont start growing fast again until late spring.

i got my coconut off ebay for only 15 dollars, but I dont think they would be easy to find in northern florida. Mine came from miami and was a newly sprouted plant. One year later and it is 4 feet tall (still no split leaves though). It stays in a room where the temp varies from 75-85 during the day and 65-75 at night. It grows pretty well in there, but not too quickly.

Yeah pretty brave eh? It's my understanding that a majesty palm has a similar lack of "sense of humor" when it comes to cold temperatures, so if I can keep a majesty palm alive in the ground, hopefully a coconut can make it too.

I took some nice pics of my greenhouse which I'll post on here. My neighbors think I am crazy - it's 8 feet tall, 9 feet wide, and 46 feet long and looks like a giant glow worm. The coldest it's gotten to was 41 degrees one night (while it was 14 outside). Since it virtually never goes below 10 here, I would say my greenhouse is frost-proof (barring a storm which would rip it away!).

It heats up nicely in the sun so even though it only went to 42 outside today it reached 71 in the greenhouse. I would predict a coconut would manage in this. My lemon tree is even flowering. Guava and papaya are also (slowly) growing.

Tropicbreezent, you certainly have mild winters. I guess it's because you are in an equatorial climate that changes very little temperature wise. Here in North America, even as far south as Miami, Florida, the all time record low is 27F, but their normal low in January is around 59F and their normal high in January is around 76F. Here in Corpus Christi, Texas, the all time record low is 11F. Where I live on a small peninsula (Flour Bluff) a few miles from the Gulf of Mexico on the far east side of Corpus Christi, I would estimate the all time record low to be around 13 or 14F. Our normal high/low at the airport (about 18 miles inland from here) in January is 66F/46F. Where I live, I estimate the averages for January to be 64F/50F. At Brownsville, about 130 miles south of here, the all time record low is 12F (Brownsville is about 26 miles inland from the Gulf), and their averages for January are 69F/50F. The lower Texas coast can go for 15-20+ years at a time without getting into the teens, so for those living on the immediate coastline, like where I am at, we can grow coconut palms for 5-10+ years at a time between coconut killing freezes (freezes in the mid 20's or lower). The Mexican Tall variety of coconut palm is probably the most cold hardy in the Western Hemisphere. I estimate it to be hardy down to 26F. The one in Brownsville in the above photos has survived several nights in the mid to upper 20'sF over the last 10-15 years, and has even survived a couple of inches of snow at Christmas 2004 (the first measurable snowfall Brownsville had in 105 years). There are some of the Malayan Dwarf varieties (green, golden, and yellow), and hybrids between the Mexican Talls and Malayan Dwarfs that are grown on the lower Texas Coast. The Malayan Dwarfs seem to suffer the most here because as I estimate, they are only hardy to about 28F and probably can't take week long cold snaps in the 40's and 50's as well as a mature Mexican Tall can.

The picture of your dwarf coconut tree looks nice there. It has healthy looking fronds. I wonder if it's just a dwarf, or is it really sick? So, were you able to get fruit out of it all the 10 years you've had it? Thanks for the link to the Indonesian website. They do have a lot of healthy looking coconut bonsai. I'm still trying to find out if they actually will produce fruit eventually. I've looked at some bonsai fruit trees on the you tube and they seem to be able to flower and produce some fruit. It would make a lot of sense for people like us to consider having bonsai trees if we cannot be sure that we can keep these tropical plants alive in the ground. You sure are a lot closer to the equator than where I am. You're over 800 miles and I'm around 2,500 miles off the equator. It's nice that you have the warm enough temperature to keep these beautiful trees there. So, do you have to manually irrigate your your landscape, or do you have an auto irrigation? It would be a lot of land to irrigate as you seem to have a huge place there. So, what do you do when your trees produce all the fruit there .. lol? Do you eat them? Do you know that coconut is known as the miracle fruit? There have been many articles and books written on it. A few years back, I started changing my cooking oil to coconut oil and include coconut milk and flour into my diet. It has brought tremendous improvement to my health situation. I've heard that coconut water is also a super nutrient drink, but I have to read more about it to find out if it contains a high sugar content which I'm trying to avoid. There's even someone on the internet selling fresh coconut water online.

@HU-289797433 Siting is everything for these. You'll want to plant them in some sort of protected microclimate if you have one available. If you can provide overhead canopy and protection from wind coming from the north and the west it will increase your chances of success. Close to a heated building helps, especially if there is a lot of brick and/or concrete in the area. Ideally, a southeast facing alcove with some form of high overhead canopy that lets light in underneath is the best bet. If you want to cheat a little, wrap it with the old school Christmas lights (aka not LED) and keep the bulbs away from the plant tissue. Even with all of the protective factors in place, there are still times where you'll have to tie up the fronds and wrap at least the growth point to keep it alive. If you get one at a big box store, it will likely be some kind of Malayan Dwarf. If possible, get the Green Malayan Dwarf. If you seek out one of the special cultivars, keep in mind their strengths and weaknesses: Jamaican Tall/Atlantic Tall: Grows extremely fast with an almost spherical crown, tends to have a touch more cold tolerance (not always), but very susceptible to Lethal Yellowing and Lethal Bronzing and does not tolerate root disturbance very well. Panama Tall: One of my friends grows these and says that they tend to hold a few less fronds than the above with similar strengths. Tend to be slightly less susceptible to disease. Maypan: A hybrid between a Malayan Dwarf and a Panama Tall. Decent compromise with a little bit of a fuller crown than the Malayan Dwarf. The coconut on these palms is huge. Mine sprouted from a coconut larger than an NBA basketball. I recently had to do some digging near this one and it did not immediately go into decline when I trimmed a few roots, so it shouldn't be as intolerant of root disturbance as the Talls. Green Malayan Dwarf: Not a true dwarf - just slower growth than a Tall cultivar. Their crown tends to be more umbrella shaped and the trunk a little more straight up and down. A technician from Spectrum decided to take it upon themselves to trim half the roots on mine without me knowing and sent it into decline. It had one frond and a spear left. I fertilized with Florikan, covered the exposed healthy roots and gave it supplemental water. It regrew its crown. Much more tolerant of root disturbance than the Talls. Golden Malayan Dwarf: Similar to above but the petioles will be golden and the coconuts will be too for a period of time before they turn brown and fall. From my experience, these seem to be the least tolerant of cold out of all the common varieties. Fiji Dwarf: Some growers are experimenting with this cultivar. It is a true dwarf that I've not seen grow over 6 feet of trunk. Supposedly almost totally resistant to Lethal Yellowing. Because Lethal Bronzing is a similar disease, it might be resistant to this as well. The crown is very large, but this would be the easiest coconut cultivar to keep alive since a blanket or two would allow you to easily protect the growing point at maturity. Another advantage is that you don't have to worry about being sued because someone died from a falling coconut. The other cultivars carry this risk since they get very tall. At least the initial reports from folks who have this cultivar are that it didn't take an inordinate amount of cold damage compared to the others. The coconut on I-Drive looks to be a Tall of some kind and has a lot of concrete and running cars around it at all times. If you provide your palm with the appropriate care, you will be successful. Hey Ptmclanahan, As far as growth rates, that sounds phenomenal even for a tall variety, and you said that you planted a dwarf. That is the fastest growing coconut palm I have ever heard of. They are fast growers, but man yours is growing faster than a weed! The fastest one I have ever had is a Hawaiian Tall, which grows about 4.5-5ft. per year. Dwarfs, usually only grow about 3.5-4ft. per year. The Malayan Dwarfs start producing their first coconuts at about 3-4 years after sprouting, therefore, you can literally have one with a trucnkof only about 4ft. that will have coconuts on it. The talls, however take 7-8 years to produce their first coconuts and their trunks are usually about 15-20ft. tall at that point. I am sorry, but I feel compelled to jump in on the Zone argument. I live in Coconut territory here in the Lower Rio Grande Valley, and it sounds like we have more of them here than what you are describing in the Orlanda/Kissimmee area, yet our winters are slightly cooler here than yours are. There is a pretty good looking Golden Malayan Dwarf about 15ft. tall in San Benito (just south of Harlingen). And I have seen some good looking 30ft. tall Mexican Talls in Brownsville, so I wouldn't be worried about yours making it through the winter, especially if you have a lot of lakes (that have water in them; how bad has the drought been there?). Remember to fertilize your dwarfs with a good palm fertilizer with a 12-4-8 ratio and micronutrients. Fertilize around the base of the palm (a few inches away from the base out to the outer range of the leaves, work the fertilizer into the top couple of inches of soil, then water them good). Do this in the Spring, Summer, and Fall. Then mulch with Cypress Mulch (a good native mulch) to a depth of about 2 inches in about a 3ft. radius pattern around your palm, but not right up againt the trunk- allow about 2-3 inches of space from the trunk to the mulch). If you do these things, your Malayans should be fine, even in Kissimmee, and you should have coconuts in about 3 years! They will probably grow to be about 25-30ft. tall to the top of the crown in your area! Enjoy! John

I live near the Pensacola area and I have never seen one over this way, so I'd assume you won't find one in the Jax area either.

Just an FYI, you dont have to go all the way to FL to get them. Merrifeild garden centers here in NoVA had them, as did the Home Depot in Alexandria on Picket Street. I personally wouldnt try one unless I had a huge greenhouse, but I do love them! Good luck to you!!!

I think it may work in the greenhouse. 41 won't even phase the cocos. My coconut palm has been in the ground fir
2 years here in central Florida 9b/10a. It's seen plenty of 30s, and the thing that's ever harmed it was frost. Daytime winter average highs here are low 70s, but can go nearly a week without ever making it past 65. Still not a problem-many of these palms can be found in my area in protected microclimates such as lakefronts.

I commute the Jax - Lake City region often and the Lake City Wal-Mart Super Center had at least 4 cocos this past Sunday. They were tagged Malayan, about 3 ft tall and probably in 3 gallon pots. $16 each. hey all looked good. Almost got one myself but was in a hurry. Hope that helps.

Well, I guess you get what you pay for - I called the Wal Mart in Lake City and asked for the Garden Center.... the person who answered (in the garden center) didn't know what a coconut palm was. She then asked around, and came back to the phone "nobody here knows. Sorry."

Luckily, I have a mother in law who JUST HAPPENED to be 2 miles from the Wal Mart in Lake City (which is where we were headed).

BAM. 2 coconut palms for me :)

That's cool you got 2. Actualy they were probably 4-5ft tall (counting the pot) cause the tallest leaves were past my chest and their strap leaves were splitting (pre-feathering).

Check this out, there is a poster on palmtalk who has been growing them in Mississippi for years, and is getting them to fruit.

He has pics of how he protects them in the winter, so that'll give you some idea on how to do it yourself. He grows them sideways so they don't gain vertical height as fast, so they can last longer in the greenhouse. Keep in mind, when grown well, they are fast, so they may outgrow your greenhouse quickly. Good luck! They also need more protection than Majesty palms, as they are about 1 zone less hardy, but when properly watered and fertilized, they can stand more cold than they would otherwise.

Yes, in Orange Park off Blanding Boulevard at Argyle Forest Blvd. Unique Palms and Plants, this guy has all sorts of palms, including Xmas, 5 trunked and more pygmy dates mixed with queens, a gigantic 18ft Coconut Palm, and several 10ft coconut palms and they have hard wood as well. His place is behind a Longhorn Steakhouse and this is the place where I got my 3 trunked Foxtail Palm.

Jaxboro is right. It's only 8 or so miles south from I-10 right off of I-295. I go by that place all the time and forgot about them. They have a lot of specimen sized palms. I almost bought a sweet double trunk Queen from there. Good prices too. (if your looking for anything else)

Majesty palms are more cold hardy than coconuts. Majesty's can take down to 26 if there healthy and its a short duration but coconuts start looking crappy when it gets below 40 and die in the 20s.Ground temps affect coconuts as well. Hope the best for you but it will take allot of work to keep it alive.

Wow, good luck! I agree with David, Majesty palms and coconut palms are very different in terms of requirements. I've had a majesty in the ground here for three years and it doesn't mind the cold ground temperatures, or the cold rain we get in the winter. A coconut (as many in California have tried), cannot tolerate cold ground temperatures. Majesty palms have no problem with that, and the proof lies in the fact that they are planted in home gardens throughout California (Southern CA, Central Coast, Bay Area & inland even as far north as Sacramento and throughout the Central Valley).

Well, they are in their new home in Virginia, and already look unhappy from the 12 hour car ride home from Florida. Although I don't imagine getting them through this winter (and summer) is going to be THAT difficult, it of course is this winter coming (2010-11) that will show whether I can do this or not.

A red navel orange tree loaded with flowers (which was good - it offset the smells associated with having two teenagers riding in the car the whole way too) hitched a ride with them :) I can't resist.

Update:

Both coconuts died within a 3 weeks of being home. Last winter's brutal temps and my struggles to keep the greenhouse in one piece resulted in 2 dead coconuts. :(

Laura in VB - if you're still on here - that's why you never got one. Sorry.

However, I am not discouraged.....

Generation 2 greenhouse is WAY stronger, better insulated, better heated etc. Temps dropped to 39 F ONCE during a power failure, and otherwise never fall below 48 at night. Day temps are routinely over 70 (usually 75-90).

I don't know if this helps, but by way of comparison - my Cavendish banana flowered and is producing a huge bunch of fruit, all my citrus trees (especially the lemon) are flowering like crazy and growing fast. I would take this as a sign that a coconut should manage such conditions.

SO - I have located a 5' tall coconut palm at a Home Depot in Jacksonville which I will take home this weekend. Hopefully the combination of getting in there with the worst of the winter behind us (hopefully), it being a bigger tree, and the improved greenhouse will mean success.

It should do well in those conditions. Mine does well in 68f-72f temps by a sunny south facing window during winter. I have mine for a few years now; she's about 3ft tall and 4ft wide.

I agree, it should do okay. Just make sure that night temperatures dont dip too low. 50F should be the coldest and some nights in the 40's wont do harm as long as it warms up to the 70s in the day, My coconut palms are doing pretty well indoors and its seeing mainly low to mid 70s during the day and upper 60s to low 70s at night (plus the dry air that comes with being indoors this time of the year).

I picked up this coconut... I admit I am not very happy about it's condition... it's clear it's been outside in the 50s in Jacksonville. It's 6 feet tall but only has one complete leaf.

Right now it's basking in my greenhouse (66 degrees, even now at 11 pm). Should reach the 80s tomorrow and most days... I've got my fingers crossed. Hopefully next winter I'll be posting pics of a big healthy coconut.
