Severe Weather for Wed. Evening, May 13th

Despite the lovely, if hot and windy, weather we're having today, rain is already doing its best to return and torment us and our gardens once again.

The NWS forecasts severe thunderstorms, high wind up to 75 mph, hail up to the size of baseballs, and possible tornadoes beginning late this afternoon and continuing into the overnight hours.

Oh, good, for a minute there I was afraid we'd have one entire dry, sunny day here and I don't know if we could handle that. Part of the forecast includes the dreaded term "heavy rain" because, you know, none of us have had enough of that yet either.

The moderate risk area, I think, is in central to NE OK and especially in Missouri, but much of the state is in the slight risk area.

Owie, Glad I made you laugh. : )

We've had too much rainy lately and not enough laughs, so I am on a mission to cheer us up.

Now, on a serious note, there's a severe T-storm in northwestern OK with tornadic potential, so everyone stay aware and stay safe.

My mistake. I thought these were for today, but they are for tomorrow. The NWS has already converted the Fire Weather Watch to a Red Flag Fire Warning and they have already added three additional counties: Murray, Carter and Love. Currently the Red Flag Fire is for 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Thursday. I'll go check the Tulsa weather office and see if they have similar warnings going. If they do, I'll come back and add the info. Probably in August I will pay someone to push them into piles, or cut them into pieces and use my tractor to grapple them into piles for winter burning. The ground will not be dry enough to support large equipment for many weeks. Thirty were uprooted and the rest snapped off 2 to 20 feet high. These are all old native trees that we recently had thinned around and just got ready to manage this year. That's the way it goes. I don't feel to bad about it because before I got down there to see it I had been under the impression that the damage was widespread. I guess it all depends on how it compares to expectations. I admit to having tears in my eyes when I first found out. I have invested so much time and money into that place. The wood is almost worthless. Pecan in this area has almost no value. This might be one of the highest density pecan tree areas in the country.

Diane Our local forecasters don't have rain in our forecast either, but they've been known to be wrong once or twice. I've linked the SPC's Convective page so you can see the slight risk area they have circled. Notice how you and I are outside of it but inside the other circled area. The text that explains their reasoning follows, if you want to read it and try to decipher the scientific gobblygook. The area outside the slight risk area also has a chance of something happening, but a fairly low one. For the folks in northern OK, Dr. Greg Forbes of The Weather Channel increased his TorCon rating for northern OK from a 4 to 5 this morning, meaning that he gives northern OK a 50% chance of having a tornado somewhere. He usually picks a city and then the actual 50 percent chance would be within 50 miles of that city, but he didn't name a city this morning...he just said 'northern Oklahoma'. For comparison's sake, he gave northern Oklahoma a TorCon rating of 8 on Monday, and we all know what happened. Diane, I like for the rain to fall in nice even batches too so nothing drowns, but we get whatever we get. This morning, TWC said some parts of the Great Plains could get a month's worth of rain in the next wave of storms that begins tomorrow and lasts several days. They didn't say which parts of the Great Plains though. When I come back inside for lunch, I'll try to find and link their national precip forecast map so we can see what we might be expecting here. There is a half inch of rain in my rain gauge. It came down really heavy and I heard one or two pieces of hail, but that was about it.

Lucky you!

Guess who was even luckier? We were! We had lightning for a couple of hours, pretty rowdy winds blowing in the 30s and 40s for a little while, and a minute or two of rain. After the weather radio went off numberous times between midnight and 2 a.m., and the county set off the fire pagers to repeat the warnings, I got up and tracked the storm on the radar on my computer, and to me, it looked like it hit state Hwy 32, which runs east-west, and followed it more or less straight into Marietta, leaving alone those of us in the southern part of the county.

I am sure the northern half of our county got it because I listened to the county's emergency radio channel as sherriff's deputies, firefighters, Marietta police officers and storm spotters/storm chasers watched and reported what they were seeing, and I heard reports of rain and hail, but it missed us.

How funny it is---last year, as the storms repeatedly missed us, I was very frustrated. This time, when this storm missed us, I was just relieved.

There's a thunderstorm popping up in NW Love County right now, roughly in the same area that got hit last night, but it is a long way from us and I hope it stays away.
