I can hardly believe that I will need to water again. I noticed a couple of plants wilting in the hot afternoon sun yesterday. Because of our rocky land, our drainage is just a little too good!

I planted more sweet corn in a new patch of ground in my little starter orchard. I may water it too to get it going. The rest of the garden is looking good. I did get rid of the old broccoli and plow that ground. I may sow the rest of my flower seeds there just to see what happens.

So far, I haven't seen any more Japanese Beetles since spraying. Thanks to all for the advice. I just checked out the Ky site this morning, EP, and am printing it out. I think I will look for the methoxychlor. That seems to be the least harmful to other things.

We are still brushhogging the fields, seems to never end.

Only new flowers in bloom are Shasta daisies,and some more
daylilies. I am going to cut the hollyhocks down! They never have looked good since they fell over from a storm. I tried to stake them, but it was just too late. I am going to try to save some seeds from them. They are beautiful, but between disease and insects and needing staking, they are almost too high maintenance for me!

The hummers are now eating almost two feeders a day. For us, that is a lot. We are still feeding the other birds too, I wonder if we shouldn't stop during summer so they will eat more insects?

Yolanda - Just promise not to laugh if we're under a foot of snow this winter.
Gld - I was thinking the same thing about it getting dry already. It's surprising how quickly the ground dries out. I do think all those rocks help with drainage but that can be a good thing since we have clay soil.
I went by a couple roadside greenhouses this week that had plants marked down. I don't need more but those "Clearance" signs lured me in. One in Republic had LOTS of annuals left. Is anyone still planting annuals? Makes me wonder how many plants get tossed in the dumpster. They had perennials marked down too.

Didn't do too much in the gardens or yard yesterday; just cleaned out the onion row. I wanted to plant the rest of my zinnia seeds, but the brushhogging the farm called! My goal is to finish this week and have that off my mind. Of course, because of the thistles, we will have to keep a close watch and do some areas again. DH still gets pretty tired since the heart attack and it is one of the meds, but the RN told him his body would acclimate itself to it......it is the one that is supposed to help you live longer after a heart attack! That is the reason I am letting some of my things go and helping him.

Christie, I have never planted this late, but saw an article suggesting you plant annuals every week or so, for a longer display.......Of course, I am doing it because I am just slow! I am fighting the urge to hit the GH's again. I still don't have all my stuff in the ground. I did get some purple flame grass early in the season at Lowes on sale and I really like it. I may become a grass person yet................

Just saw the weather and he says nothing in the moisture department for two weeks....so back to the garden hose.

I am heading out to the field early this morning to mow, so all for now.

I didn't do much outside today...a little pot watering, checked on the mist system to see that it was working and everything looked OK. I have to adjust for the wind drift at times, but it was nice and calm today, so no problem. spent most of the morning baking bread. DH keeps a close eye on the bread inventory... he is not about to eat that stuff from the store if he can remind me that it is running low. :) Afraid I created a permanent job when I started to grind my own and bake.

Not very exciting, but there you have it...baking bread and laundry were my main accomplishments for the day. I plan to get out early in the morning to do some flower bed work. I seem to have waited a bit late to get extra mulch on them.

Not much going on here the last few days except being hotter and drier! Noticed on my mailbox weather this morning they listed isolated thunderstorms for Monday. Something to hope for. I try to get outdoor stuff done early in the morning and we walk late in the evening.

Off to eat my oatmeal and water some plants. Need to make a bank and library run today. I like to read some after lunch and before I fall asleep each evening. I want to check and see what books they have on clematis. Anyone know of a good one with pics. I can look most varieties up on the Clematis society website but would like to have a good book.

Gid...read where you are planting sweet corn. We had our first corn for the year this week. A family member's corn was ready for the picking and it sure tasted good. I don't have as many hummers as you have at present. Only a few are around at this time of the year. When migration begins we are loaded with them and we love to have them. We have 36 acres that we maintain and one of my hobbies is birding. I try to keep everything wildlife friendly and enjoy every minute of it.

Christie...I won't laugh about the snow. That's a promise. We very seldom have snow this far south and when we do it just brings all things to a halt. Folk down here in Louisiana have trouble driving on dry roads much less on snowy or icey roads. LOL. Some of our friends up north only laugh at us when we have to shut down schools, businesses etc. due to the weather.

Millie...we are both retired and enjoy traveling and made many trips up into Arkansas and up to Springfield, MO. We started going to Branson before it is what it is today. Almost bought property in Kimberling City a few years back. Our travels have been put on hold for the present due to medical situation but look forward to getting up into your part of the country again. We are only making one day trips at present.

As mentioned above our place is wildlife friendly and we have bluebird boxes up, purple martins and wood duck boxes. I have 6 wood duck nest boxes that fledged 121 ducklings this year. Forgot to mention that I also have 1 pair of Great Crested Flycathers that nest here every year and I have to provide them with a nest box of their own. Oh, the things that a person does for wildlife when they are into the hobby. Love it........

Yolanda, when you go to Springfield, and hit highway 60-63, from your direction, you're 3 miles from our farm.and, i have a SIL that lives near Minden,La.
heat and humidity building more each day here. just planted dianthus, and butterfly bushes, they were shipped late. i've planted them in a nursery bed in shade of the house, from the afternoon sun, hope they make it.
i'm beginning to think i've fixed my chicken house too predator proof, feels like, in the mornings when i open up, it's almost air-proof.think i'll cut a window into office next door, and screen it, to have air circulation. always something, isnt there!
bush-hogging all done for now, probably have it done again before winter, we always forget how beautiful fields are after its done. think soon it will be brown as my lawn tho.
time to pre-buy winters propane, and get hay bought for animals. i understand pre-buy propane is $1.35 per gallon now, and-last year, which wasnt dry like this year, we paid $3.75 a bale for hay.
DH has another MRI scheduled for next month, to keep track of tumor-----but other than all this--ITS A GREAT DAY IN MR. ROGERS NEIGHBOORHOOD!!--lol

Hi Yolanda. We are on the edge of the Ozark uplift in NE OK lake country. We are only a few miles from the MO/AR line. It is very scenic and quiet here. We appreciate learning of other areas. Have never been to Louisiana. We did a lot of traveling by travel trailer (before moving here, from Arizona, in 1986) thru MO, AR, Kansas, and Ill. We are within the political area of the Cherokee Nation of OK (which is significant to me), and near my husband's acquaintances in MO, and my aunt in Central AR. We prefer this area to the dry heat of the southwest. We are also a certified OK wildscape and enjoy the birds and small wild life but are not bothered by the deer or destructive nature. We both maintain our home and gardens and are enjoying being 2 of us known by cybername, EP.

Susy, I hope you found some good books at the library. I do most of my reading at bedtime as well. I usually glance at the morning paper, but save it for evening reading along with a good book.

Ceresone, good to know that you are not too far from one of my eating places when we do get up your way. We make it a point to stop at Lambert's over in Ozark. A friend told us about it and that's how we ended up going there. Also spent some time at Battleship Mall and Bass Pro. Had my first experience with a tornado shelter in a mall at Battleship. We don't have them here in our malls, but do have hurricane shelters that do open up if needed. By the way Bass Pro is in the process of opening up between Baton Rouge and New Orleans. Also understand that they will be over at Branson Landing. BTW it is about a two hour drive from here to Minden and I'm located south of there.

EP, I have never visited your state thus far, but do plan on heading up your way one day. We also use to do RVing a few years back but it got to the point that we were not using the RV enough to justify the extra expense. So we sold it and who knows, the day may come when we may get back into it. Lately, I have been thinking about it more and more. We live just a few miles from an Indian Reservation. There are several reservations in Louisiana and some have landbase casino's on them. Casino's in this state are either on boats and the only landbase casino's are on reservations. However, a landbase casino recently opened, and to my knowledge it is not on a reservation, but affiliated with a horse racing track. Guess everyone knows that here in Louisiana we have the very best politicians that money can buy!!!!!!LOL

Well I know that I was long winded and hope I did not bore anyone. Good to hear from each of you.

I didn't bush-hog today.....DH thought my tractor sounded funny, so I stayed and got semi-caught up in the yard and garden. This was the year I mulched almost everything in the garden, even the sweet corn. You should have seen me (no, you shouldn't!) I crawled between the corn rows on my hands and knees to weed and thin the corn which is now about 36 inches tall. I kept thinking of snakes as I crawled along......We have seen so many this year. I am now watering and have been since 7 am this morning. It will take me 5 days to get everything.

Christie, I finally planted all those old flower seeds I had and the zinnias came up overnight practically. I finished today with marigolds, more zinnias, cosmos, rudbeckias and whatever else I had. I am trashing the rest and starting fresh next year. The zinnias are saved from last year. Be interesting to see if I get flowers by planting so late and so hot. I know I will have to water them to get germination.

Blooming now, more daylilies, a few shastas, larkspur almost done, two clematis (I think Polish Spirit and Etolie Violette), zinnias (seeded themselves from last year), gaillardias, petunias, stokesia, Annabelle hydrangea, melampodium, salvias, feverfew (I love this plant), monarda Marshall's Delight (and the delight of the hummers), a few geraniums, a few lilies, russian sage (I trimmed it this year and it looks pretty sad), asclepias, and who knows what else! Oh, I forgot my pride and joy: very dark blue delphs. These are from seed and I didn't know for sure the color. Hope they make it through the winter.

Something came in during the night and pretty much wallowed my pumpkin patch....I could see dog tracks or something of that nature. Ruined some plants. I wish the garden was fenced.

Yolanda, when you get to Ozark, you are pretty close to me. We live just northwest of Springfield. I have often told DH I would love to tour the old southern mansions in La. So far, he hasn't taken me up on it. The 1800's are my favorite period in history and my favorite novels are of the south during that time period and earlier. I sometimes think I was born out of my time. I could have lived the pioneer life.

Let's hope for a cool down and more rain....

We haven't used an RV in years. Much prefer a nice motel with pool and spa. None of those near us here. We don't need to travel much now. Lots of camping and fishing for those who enjoy it. We garden and enjoy the peace and quiet. We don't support casinos either but they do bring in revenue for health care, roads, and education.

We appreciate reading of the MO area as had considered moving there but ended up here instead. The entire Ozark area is beautiful. EP

Still hot and dry here in Louisiana. Temps upper 90's and heat index 100 or better. Watering garden everyday and tomatoes are just about finished. Have plants coming up to transplant later for fall crop. Eggplants and okra love this hot weather so they are producing like wildfire. Also been getting fresh corn from family and friends. Hope everyone is well and have a great weekend.

The weather is the same for us here, hot and dry. I have watered all day and still not done. The garden looks good, but everything will be later than usualy for me. I have had two cucumbers! They were very tasty.

I am so angry with some varmint! I just planted a peach tree and it had one peach that I was letting ripen......when I went out to water it today, the peach was gone and the main leader was snapped off. I guess the raccoon (I'm betting) climbed up for a snack and was too heavy and broke the tree. I don't know how it will develop now.

I mowed today and did some weeding. It seems the weeds always grow no matter the weather.

GD, know what you mean about varmints, esp. raccoons. I have been trying for a week to trap the one that comes up on the back deck and eats the cat's food. Set the live trap and caught one about 2 weeks ago, then took the trap to my shop and caught two down there, they had destroyed my watermelon patch.

But this varmint is something else, I looked out the kitchen window the other night and instead of going in the trap, he was reaching thru the side and getting the food! So, tonight I took two old cookie sheets and am trying to seal off the side where he reaches thru. DH is getting quite a kick out me trying to catch that varmint.

Well, we got a tiny shower today that didn't amount to enough to settle the dust. Then, I had two people come in the shop and tell me that is was just pouring in S'ville and water running down the street. That is so aggravating and it's only 3 mi. from us. Anyway I dragged hoses around all morning to water stuff.

Well, better run and see what my varmint is up to now.
