I have a similar question - in late July (Ohio) when it is obviously not dormant I want to dig up my Desmond Tutu rose bush and bring it to my parents in humid, hot Houston. Is flying with it as a bareroot a possibility since it's growing season? It was a bareroot plant 2 years ago with bigger roots so keeping it potted in soil is not an option. It's alive and healthy but still relatively small compared to some of my others. I'd be flying with it so it will be faster than Fed Ex next day, would be same day (but adding time on both ends to dig up then plant, just like in shipping). I wonder if it will survive in my carryon suitcase without soil , since ice packs are not allowed due to the liquids rule. Maybe I should do a checkin bag for a larger bag and add ice packs. Maybe I can water liberally for a few days before, soak and wrap damp brown paper packing material around the roots? Cuttings are not in consideration since the rose is likely still under patent, and even if it wasn't, there is no time. I could dig it up tomorrow as my sister's passing thru from Ohio to Texas... but I'd have to go dig it up and I don't think her husband and her want to drive with a rose in addition to their kids, or care for it in Dallas till they can go to Houston. I guess no one can really say whether it will survive or not, wonder if I should take a chance or if it's too much of a hassle. Or Desmond can be the sacrificial lamb to see if this works.

KSWL, Yes, so you know the Wall Street mentality. It is understandable though when 95% of your pay is "bonus" and usually the bonuses are pretty subjective at the individual level. In any given year they can be zero or a heck of a lot. Yes, it keeps you tethered (as does the form of the payout, a good bit of it stock). SueB, What serendipity! Running, DH got me studs for mother's day a few years ago, and it occurs to me they may be (may be?) the one thing that truly never goes out of style! Sounds like you deserve 'em! Outside, Too funny! ONe year at work I received three different bouquets of roses. ONe was from Dad and two were from love interests. That caused a stir, and I never said a word, LOL. I like your reply. I retired a few years ago, for about a year. Then an exboss recruited me to his new firm. I say I work "one day a week" now; i go into our office 1 day, but I also do some work from home. Once in a while I travel. It is perfect for me. I have to say, I do not recommend flat out retirement at all,and I hope to do this forever.

My son surprised me with tickets to see Aladdin on Broadway yesterday. :) Never mind he's almost 28 years old. He figured we loved the movie when he was a kid, so would enjoy the show and he was right! We did. Afterwards we headed back to the island for dinner in a local restaurant. All in all a perfect day. The only thing missing was my Mom who passed away almost two years ago. I miss her every single day. :) Oh and my memory was jogged about a peach tree we bought the first year we moved into our house when my kids were 2 and 6 years old. Every year we took a picture of the kids in front of the tree until our marriage fell apart. Worst memory? In I should have known at the time? LOL. My son was about 20 months and had quite a vocabulary already. My ex didn't get me anything for mothers day. Not a card with my son's name on it, nothing. I was so mad I confronted him and suggested that the least he could have done was tell our son to say Happy Mother's day to me. He insisted that would be too hard to teach our son. I turned to my son and said, J, please say "Happy Mother's Day." J then said, "Happu Muddah's Day Mommy." For father's day that year, I taught my Son to say, "Happy Father's Day" and found a picture of our son and I snuggling, put it in a cheap frame, wrapped it up, gave it to our son and had our son give it to his father and say, "Happy Father's Day." Needless to say, his father never forgot mother's day again. Too bad it took me another 14 years to see the writing on the wall.
