Ozarks Natives for Butterflies

They had the annual Naturescaping Symposium and Plant Sale at the Nature Center last week and I bought a few new things. I'm hoping the butterflies or hummingbirds will like some of these. I have to list them here so I can look back at it next year when I can't remember. : )

Lanceleaf Coreopsis

Slender Mountain Mint - Pycnanthemum tenuifolium

Smooth phlox - glaberrima

Silene caroliniana

Silene virginica

Indian Pink - Spigelia marilandica

Silene regia - already have one of these

I have a phlox pilosa and phlox stolonifera to plant also. I think both of those will bloom earlier than my tall garden phlox.

I'm wondering if I need to plant the Slender Mountain Mint way at the back of my field. Hope that one's not too aggressive.

Christie do you have Rudbeckia maxima? There is one at Nathanael Greene Park outside the demonstration gardens near the entrance. This is in the park not my yard.

I don't have that one Helen. From the name, I assume it gets pretty tall. I wonder if it blooms a long time. I'll look for it next time I go to Nathanael Greene.

With the state of the union and the economy these days, good luck. I'd suggest that Lepidopteran grants usually come from institutions like universities or natural history museums, and they are more to fund studies or to obtain specimens for their synoptic collection. What we did when I lived in another state and was an officer of the local lepidopetrists society is work out a deal with our city zoo. The zoo paid for the cost to build (convert actually) the butterfly house and the society members the manpower, livestock and upkeep of it.

I was there this morning... Tons of butterfly material, and a fairly good selection of herbs, but not so much in the way of native plants. Of course, there's lots of stuff that I wanted, but I really tried to focus on the things which will serve a direct purpose in my garden... I ended up with a Stevia plant and a native Acacia tree. The Stevia was a good find because now I can have a homegrown healthy sugar substitute. And the Acacia is just exactly what a particular arid, sun-baked section of my yard needs I'll post some pictures when I get around to shooting the garden again. The event is still happenin' tomorrow. Let us know how it goes, anyone else who makes it.

Just got back. Probably crossed paths with you Laura. I bought most of my stuff at the USF booth. Got 6 tall Pentas, Jatropha. Bought some Bronze fennel and dill fromthe guy across from the USF place. Got a "quirrels Tail plant and a Verbena from the place that had all the Salvia and Cosmos. Found a Maypops Passionvine another place on the other side. Sure was smaller than in the past. Missed seeing the Greathouse butterfly nursery people, Crowleys and the Croton Cociety people. I got more than I went for and found what I wanted but still would have liked to check out the others that are normally there. On the plus side - there were lots of butterflies around their butterfly garden and that was good to see.

It gets very tall but the rosette of leaves at the bottom is bluish in color and attractive in a wild sort of way. All the wild flowers in my opinion take a certain tolerance for untidy looks. I am more tolerant of the wild look than the severely trimmed, lined up straight and tidy look.
