Rain/Hail/Flooding in Love County Right Now

Yea! It's raining, it's pouring......and thre's thunder, lightning, hail and flooding....here in Love County this morning. We NEEDED the rain but could have lived without the lighting, hail and flooding.

Carter County got slammed hard earlier this morning and we knew they had hail and flooding before it hit us. I had time to move container plants under the patio roof, put dogs in the garage and drive out and pick up DH (who was jogging and did NOT want to get into the car even though there was lightning). Now it is pouring down rain and I hope it rains for hours, but bet it won't.

Parts of Love County and Carter County are having hail up to half-dollar size, and I hate to say this for fear I'll jinx us, but no hail has fallen here at our house yet. It isn't flooding here yet, but roadways are flooding out west of Marietta near Falconhead and the Turner School.

I need to get off the computer. The power is coming and going, and my battery in my laptop is about to run out of juice....and I probably shouldn't be on the computer in this weather anyway.

I believe all the hail missed us too. Thank God! I woke early this morning to distant thunder so got up to shut down computers....looked outside.....said a prayer for no hail or damage and went back to bed....lol.
We had nice rain. It did rain for hours here...the good soaking in kind. So that is a blessing.
It sure feels cool today compared to what we have been having. So that is saving the AC....not bad either.
I have not even been out of the house at all today...other than to step onto patio a time or two. And things look pretty soggy but otherwise seem to be fine.
Hope things at your place faired so well.

When I first went outside around 6:45 a.m., it was a normal early morning, meaning warm and humid. I got out some gardening tools, let the dogs out of the house and garage and into the dog yard, etc. DH left to go jogging. Suddenly the sky darkened to our northwest....very dark and threatening, thunder and lightning, etc. and everything (dogs, gardening tools, DH) went back inside (it was so dark the security light came back on)!

All we had was hard rain (2.6" in an hour or two), high wind (took out some power lines in town), flooding in NW Love County, and tons and tons of lightning and thunder. We never lost our power here for long, but it kept going out and coming back on. In town, I know the hospital and Sonic (two of the most important places in town!) were without power for a while.

No hail here, no damage to speak of. Very humid now and immense puddles everywhere. More rain in forecast for later.

I am loving the cooler temperatures and don't think we'll get to 92 degrees as originally forecast.

We needed rain here in the worst possible way so I am deliriously happy that it fell.

Very interesting spring in IOWA! We are about 45 miles south east of Des Moines. When the storm hit on Saturday night we were in Knoxville Iowa eating, and later found out how bad things were outside! Sorry to hear about your damage junco1120! When looking at the hostas yesterday at most of the hostas unfurled, noticed that we must of had hail as there are many holes in the hostas. The hostas will recover. But what a spring going from 80* early, then freezes in between, heavy winds, now hail. See there are lots of Iowa folks on this forum. Come join us at the Russ O'Harra Hosta Society. ......jeepers - I'm asking the same question, Moni! How is your garden doing BTW. Haven't heard from you in awhile and it's really good to see you back! Thanks for the info, Dawn. No, I'm just looking to see what kind of soil I may have in certain places where certain weeds tend to proliferate. I know it's more accurate to get soil tests, but it's just such a pain to gather soil samples, take them down to the extension service, pay $8.00 and wait for results. I'm trying to do it au naturelle. For instance, I know that areas where clover (melilotis) grows well indicates your soil is lacking nitrogen, but that the clover will provide nitrogen in the soil (am I wrong about this? I'll check your resource to be sure on this one). I know that Queen Anne's Lace or wild carrot indicates something, too, but not sure what. Dandelions also indicate something, too. Thistle (bull) indicates another type, and so on and so on. I found sources that listed just 3 or 4 weeds, but nothing that was comprehensive. Thanks for the info. Susan

What is it Randy always says? "The worm will turn..." LOL It is silly that 3" of rain in the month of August could make me as happy as it has. : ) Well, and having highs in the 70s and 80s instead of the 100s doesn't hurt either. I still can't do much outside because of the mud, but maybe by tomorrow. The bermuda grass has greened up and gone nuts and needs to be mowed pronto, but is still too wet. We do have sunlight now after a little drizzle all morning (so light that it probably won't even register as a "trace".) With the sun and the heating will come higher humidity, but we'll even enjoy that. A LOT of flowers that were on their last legs just 2 weeks ago have greened up and some are already in bloom again. In bloom in the yard and garden are: morning glories, black-eyed susan vines, purple hyacinth bean vines, Laura Bush Petunia (purple), Pink Laura Bush Petunia, Datura, Brugmansia, Texas hummingbird sage, Pink Queen and Rose Queen cleome, salvia farinacea, orange profusion zinnia, mixed tall zinnias, Nikki green nicotiana, four o'clocks (white, yellow, pink, fuschia) zebrina malva, verbena bonariensis (tall verbena), yellow-flowered dwarf marigolds, sunflowers and pink, purple and red-flowered gomphrena (globe amaranth). Well, at least that's all I can remember from my trip to the garden this morning. In the veggie garden, the surviving tomatoes, peppers, melons and okra have blooms. In the pasture, rain lilies, goldenrod and the wild verbena with teeny, tiny little purple flowers are blooming. We have rain in the forecast for, I think, 6 or 7 of the next 10 days, so maybe some more will fall. And for those of you who haven't had rain lately, I hope you get some. merrybookwyrm, You still have to be pretty tough, independent and determined to live out there around Orr because it is just so remote. Even with modern-day vehicles, it can take police, firefighters and medics a long time to reach you out there in the boondocks even without flooding or road washouts which just compound an already difficult situation. Western Love County, including Orr, and the adjacent portions of Carter and Jefferson County were hit really hard by this last storm. They got a lot more rain and flooding out there than we had here in southcentral Love County. There's a point where you even stop having cell phone service once you get out there, and where the fire and police radios cut in and out and have so much static that they are pretty much unusable for communication. In this day and age, it is shocking to me that there's still areas that are not so remote, mileage-wise, but that still are far enough out there that communication is spotty. Carol, I love the sunshine and it helps the garden a lot, but the heat and heat index numbers kinda take the fun out of it. We gardeners and our gardens are going to be roasting hot this week which will help plant growth but make life miserable otherwise. I've been so busy with other things, or flooded out of the garden, that I am so far behind on harvesting and canning that it isn't even funny. Today I'm going to sort, wash and freeze about 10-15 gallons of tomatoes that I can use later on to make salsa. I just don't have time to make it this week. I've already got that many frozen, so they're really piling up and still there's tomatoes piled up on every flat surface in the house. I am more behind than usual. Partly it is because of the peppers. I have hot peppers, onions, garlic, tomatoes, etc. for making salsa, but the sweet peppers are so far behind it isn't even funny. If I picked every sweet bell that is even half-sized, I might not get enough for one batch of Annie's Salsa. I did hold the pepper plants in cups forever during the May flooding before finally getting them planted and they are way behind everything else. The jalapenos were quicker to set fruit and start making up for lost time but the sweet bells and poblano plants are just sitting there. Apparently 33+" of rain in the last 7 weeks does not impress them at all. I've been trying to just stay caught up on making plum jelly, but last week I didn't have time to make jelly so I just extracted the juice and froze it. I can make jelly any time, but I don't like the fact that I'm stockpiling everything in the freezer. I wanted to have all the plums finished before the peaches began to ripen, and we're only 2-3 days away from the first peach harvest (if I can keep the birds out of them, which seems like a losing battle). I'm hoping to pick a day later in the week, maybe on Wed or Thurs, where I block out any and every other thing and just focus on thawing that plum juice and making all the jelly. Oh, and I have more plums to harvest sometime today. It is cloudy and there's been rain (and flash-flooding) to our southeast. The last thing any part of this region needs today is more rain. Lake Texoma's rise has slowed dramatically in the last day, so I am not sure its crest will even match the record crest that happened around June 1st. The Red River is falling fast, and everyone here is relieved by that. I never got okra, cucumbers, winter squash or purple hull peas planted, and I need to do it now or not do it at all, but I'm so distracted by trying to deal with the tomato and fruit harvest that I don't know if I'll do it. I might wait and see how the watermelons and muskmelons I planted before last week's heavy rain/flooding do. If they don't survive or quickly become diseased in the waterlogged soil, I might not bother planting anything else. At least all the cracks in the ground healed up, though I am sure the silty ones on the surface will return soon. Dawn

No hail here in the northeast from what I've seen
Plenty of rain Saturday and even more on Monday accompanied by several power cuts throughout the day.

Got home from work this evening (Tues) and it's hot and sticky but I'm sure that everything in the veg plot has shot up a few inches overnight. Not complaining of course.

We got 3 inches overnight Sun/Mon and a little more than 3 inches again this early AM. Lots of flooding, but we are pretty used to it this year. Better too wet than too dry, especially heading into June.

I'm glad the hail missed you too.

Whenever I have a garden that looks darn-near perfect and has plants that are producing like crazy, that is usually when the hail hits. Hail never hits us here in a bad year (like last year) when everything looks pitiful and isn't doing so well. So, since the garden looks spectacular right now, I've been expecting baseball-sized hail.

Our rainfall was slightly below normal for the year-to-date, but today's couple of inches really boosted our total for the year so far to about 13" or 14". For us, a good year is about 30" to 32", so 14" by this point in time isn't bad. The rain has been falling in small amounts like 0.02 one day and 0.37 another and 0.23 another, so getting 2.6 was wonderful. Having the temperatures about 15 degrees lower than yesterday was nice too.

I'm expecting the plants to have another good growth spurt now that they finally got some water. We're supposed to get more rain tonight, but I'm not counting on it. We WERE NOT supposed to have rain this morning, so I figure we'll make up for it by not getting the rain forecast to fall tonight.

Scott, Hey, we posted at exactly the same time so I missed your news of the six inches of rain. Do you know how much rain we have had in the last 8 weeks? Seven inches. Life isn't fair. LOL You have six inches of rainfall in 2 days, and it takes us 2 months to get just slightly more than that!

We did get about 10" of rain last May, and an equivalent amount in June, and I don't want that much again!

Well, you may have more rain, you lucky dog, but I bet you'll have more mosquitoes too (and you are welcome to keep them there!).

In the Far right corner of Johnston Co. we received 2.5 inches of rain this morning by around noon it was tapering off. Lots of thunder and lighting.
The rain sure was welcomed here, but the skeeters that are coming after are not!

A hollyhock plant fell over as well as some Malva flowers,
I just took a string and put around the plants to move them back into place..

I was completely amazed that neither my malvas nor my hollyhocks fell over because the wind sure blew here! Some of the chamomile was flattened down to the ground, but they were getting pretty tall and about to finish flowering, so I needed to cut them back anyway.

Wasn't the rain lovely???

We have had 8 "floods" in the last 13 months. I call it a flood if the water in our creek is high enough for the nearby road to be closed and high enough for our entire bottomland area to be covered by a couple of feet so that I can see it from the house. We are only a mile or so from where the creek dumps into the Arkansas River.

In the previous 3 years, we had 1 "flood". So that is 9 total floods in 4 years with 8 of the nine being since the beginning of last May. Of course, the fact that the ground is totally saturated and all ponds full from one rain event makes any 2 inch rain in the next few weeks cause another flood.

Yes, the mosquitos will force us inside for the next month unless we have a decent breeze.
