'Audrey' Growing Exponentially

From George Deatz yesterday:

"I was out at the Community Building on the north side of Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park today visiting the Corpus Plant. The plant, now affectionately known as "Audrey", has grown since the last report. Current height 4 feet 5 inches with a 27.5 inch girth. Dr Roston is now thinking Audrey could bloom as soon as this coming weekend."

The Corpse Flower (Amorphophallus titanum) displayed at the Lawn and Garden Show has since been affectionately named 'Audrey'.

As of 4:30 pm yesterday the plant was 53 inches high and 27.5 inches around. Yesterday it didn't grow so Bill Roston who has been tending to the plant, thinks it might be in the process of starting to open.

Friends of the Garden has expanded viewing hours from 8:00 am - 6:00 pm, stop by to see this rare phenomena, and tell you friends. Don't worry, the plant does not smell until it's in bloom.

You canÂt control nature, says William Roston, the Friends of the Garden member who has been "babysitting" Audrey, the rareÂand stinkyÂcorpse plant that has bloomed in the U.S. approximantly 40 times since 1939. But there are indications that Audrey could bloom this weekend, Saturday-Sunday, March 6-7, so visiting hours have been extended from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm at the community meeting room at Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park, located at 2400 South Scenic Avenue across from Horton Smith Golf Course.

"There is no way to know for sure when Audrey will bloom," said Friends of the Garden president George Deatz, "but we are attempting to keep the public notified because the corpse plantÂs bloom only lasts from 24 to 48 hours." That latest update can always be found at www.friendsofthegarden.org.

Named "Audrey" after the voracious and fast-growing plant in the 1960 rock musical, "The Little Shop of Horrors," Amorphophallus titanum grows in the wild only on the island of Sumatra and blooms every six to ten years. Titanum is known for its erratic, lush growth and the putrid fragrance of its blossoming flower that, Roston says, "smells like a dead rat and could make a fly vomit."

Roston, an osteopath who practices in Forsyth and serves as primary garden designer for the Friends of the Garden, brought the 35-pound tuber to Springfield in November 2009. ItÂs been dormant until about six or seven weeks ago when it started growing. . .and growing. For the past few days, heÂs been "babysitting BillÂs baby" at the park, noting its growth and answering visitorsÂ questions about what-he-calls "the plant from Mars."

"Certainly itÂs the superstar of the plant kingdom. Everything about it is dynamite," said Roston. Added Deatz, "this is quite an event for Springfield. ItÂs a rare blooming flower with few on display in the U.S."

About the Friends of the Garden: The volunteer organization has been active since 1998 in pursuing funding and encouraging interest in building the 12,700-square-foot Botanical Center now under construction in the 114-acre Nathanael Greene/Close Memorial Park, 2400 South Scenic Avenue. The facility is expected to be completed in September 2010. I had one for several years that grew like crazy, apparently because I planted it right next to a primary downspout. I knew (and still know) little to nothing about growing roses, just dumb luck! We get plenty of rain in SW Washington state, so this girl was rarely thirsty, and thus I usually had to prune quite a bit at least every year if not twice. :) I had to move recently, and she was so deeply rooted that I had to leave her behind. :( I've been surprised & disappointed at how difficult it seems to be to find another at any price. :( Fortunately, the new tenant has offered to let me come back for her, guess I just gotta find someone willing to dig deep enough. :P

You have 2 options. You can cut the top back to a leaf that is growing back toward an imaginary line straight up from the center of the pot, or you can cut back harder so you take the crook out of the picture and make the top straight. The grower cut the trunk back and that's how the branch that became the new leader grew. What the grower should have done and you can still do is this: Imagine this as your tree and the leaves are branches. ^^^ When the grower cut the top back ^^^, he cut it back to about where the knot is, and the branch that turned into the new leader (that would be the one just below the knot) grew at the same angle as the leaf stem. What he SHOULD have done is, cut the top back only part way so there was a stub left, then tie the new branch to the stub so it grows straight: **************************************************************************************************** Your idea to prune back to the leaf growing back toward the center is what I described above. It's ok to do that if the distance from the soil line to the first crook in the trunk is longer than the distance from the crook in the trunk to the branch growing back toward the middle. IOW, as your tree zig-zags, the distance between the direction changes has to grow increasingly smaller as your eye moves from bottom to top. This is because (in nature), branches get much closer together near the top of trees, and that's what your eye expects to see. If you DON'T see the sections between turns getting shorter toward the top, it will look odd, even if you can't put your finger on the precise reason why. I actually posted that second photo just as an example of an "open non-lollipop structure", because most people I've consulted just try to guide me in to the usual lollipop. I have to say I do love the lazy-S shape (thanks for the reference name!), so I will try that with a the cuttings that I have. Would you have any advice to shape my current trunk into a harmonious and taller tree? I don't need it to be straight, but I'd like for it to look like a tree (not a bush) and just have an interesting trunk on display. @tropicofcancer (6b SW-PA) Sorry to hear about the Great Bayan Tree :(. Thank you for the advice! I guess @tapla (mid-Michigan, USDA z5b-6a) and you would agree that to make great art be bold or get out hahaha, I am not yet at that level, but will take it into account if someday I muster the courage (I might!). If I do... do I leave that 6-7 inch trunk in the same big pot? How long should it take to grow lower branches? For propagating, should the cuttings be from the green trunks or brown trunks? Can it be done with just the leaves? Would you recommend water or soil? How long should it take? I've seen a lot of contradicting advice on the internet.

It's hard to make suggestions re what to do w/o knowing where you live. If you want to make a plant look stunted, the best way to go about it is by keeping it always in a high state of vitality so it grows a lot, and do your "stunting" manually. Keeping a plant horribly rootbound limits branch extension and forces tighter internodes (less space between leaves), but it also limits vitality and the plant's ability to defend itself against pathogens and insect herbivory. Growth is measured by an increase in the plant's dry mass. When your tree isn't growing, it's dying, so the closer you get to stagnant growth (when a plant should be growing) the unhealthier the tree becomes. Note the list of how a plant orders its use of energy. It first goes to it's strongest sink, which is respiratory maintenance (maintenance of all its living parts), followed in order by production of fine roots, followed by flower/ seed/ fruit production, the primary growth (extension of both roots and shoots), then secondary growth (thickening), and finally, the synthesis of defensive chemicals. So stress first affects a plant's ability to defend itself - not the right path to keeping a plant small. Bonsai live in small pots (relative to plant size) and are kept compact, often for centuries, yet they are some of the healthiest plants in pots. This they owe to their care givers' attention to regular root work and regular/ judicious pruning. What I'm driving at is you need to prune it; however, where you live has much to do with HOW you prune it; reason being, you want to do a hard prune in late spring to provide a framework to build on. What the tree puts on in terms of growth in summer will be desirable and something to be kept as a part of the end composition. Growth but on late fall through early spring will be long (in internodes) and lanky, so, undesirable. If you live in the N Hemisphere, you should partially prune now and prune back hard in late spring, as measured by the calendar.
