HOw much snow did you get?

I just went out to measure our snow fall. So far we have received 8 inches. I'm worried about my friends on Mountain Rd. since they still do not have electricity from last weeks ice storm. We received ours back last Monday. More snow and wind is predicted for tomorrow. At least the skiers are happy.

We got about 6" down here on the Cape - heavy, wet, but beautiful. My sympathy to those who got the double whammy or are still without power from that last storm.

Well if it ever STOPS snowing, I'll have a better idea!

Seriously - we're at at least a foot but it hasn't stopped snowing yet. It's been going non-stop for 22 hours now.

We've had our share of snow but nothing like our eastern friends are reporting (and hard in the south although not as deep). But this seems like an unusually cold February. For days on end, the sun melts or evaporates a lot of snow, but there's still plenty and more expected, snow covering this time of year is good. But the daytime temps have been in the 20's for days and forecast for days to come, may hit 30. And the nights have been in the low teens and single digits, a few nights below zero. Nothing like some of the extreme cold we have had even last year. One year it was 18 below for several days, a pipe froze first time in my memory except trailer folks and had to get heat tape and wrap around them. I worry about the car starting, had battery problems last year and this, always ask for extra cold cranking power because my car has to sit outside. Hope that's solved. One battery was bad, and Walmart made it good after I lost my receipt. Somehow the trunk light got left on when it was frozen shut, I popped it, couldn't get it open, then it thawed. Somehow the dome light got left on this winter. I always try to remember the car lights. Now they have some that turn off automatically. Driving in winter here is always a worry especially on highways, the interstate and the like. Main streets are fairly quickly cleared and salted, it's pretty good. I think overall they do a good job, but people always complain. They complain about the side streets but people won't move their cars so the plows can't get in and get it done right, then sometimes they turn to terrible ice which is much worse than driving on snow. Never hit your brakes or use the accelerator if you see ice (black ice you can't see) and can't switch lanes or get around it, lots of accidents, some bad. If it's snow or ice and you have to stop at a stop sign and expecially on a down slope, pump your brakes and go as slow as possible if you see it coming. Shift down if it won't throw your car out of control. Glad you people are being more careful. If you start skidding, you're supposed to turn your wheels in the direction you're skidding, counterintuitive. Had a rough drive on the interstate once, skidded, compensated, skidded the other way, compensated, was skidding for quite a ways like that until I got the car back under control, freezing rain and snow. I did not dare panic, and there was a lot of traffic, missed the exit on account of it and decided safer to go on to the next one.

We got about two inches in Carthage, but it was very light snow and most of it was gone tonight when I got home from work. We got about six inches from the snowstorm a couple of weeks ago. I had just about enough of snow being in CT for the holidays but I sure did get some gorgeous pictures of my pines laden down with snow.

I've been thinking about all of you in the storms path. And those in the coming storms. To gauge about how much moisture results from your snow, is it a wet or dry snow? Wet makes good snow balls, dry just falls apart in your hand and blows away. If it's a dry snow, 1 inch of snow equals about 5 inches of rain. Here on the Plymouth, MA coast, there's only about 2 inches of very concentrated snow - wet, heavy, not quite slush yet. A lot more came down, but the temperature has stayed around freezing so it couldn't accumulate. I shook it off a few evergreen shrubs - when it turns cold tonight and the next storm comes there may be icing problems.

Eight inches here so far (yesterday). Flurrying now, and three to five more predicted for tomorrow, possibly with a nice serving of ice thrown in. Between my fear of driving in snow and on icy/snowy roads, having a new driver in the house (license four months ago) who has to drive to work, and the fact that they do an absolutely terrible job of plowing, I'm a nervous wreck. I just wish everything would be cancelled when it snows, lol.

I can't wait till I'm retired and can sit by the fire and watch it out the window and not have to go anywhere. Too bad that's about 20 years away, lol.

Dee: that new driver in the house who has to drive would scare me most. Being retired is definitely an advantage in weather like this - I'm mulling over whether I really need to drive to the dump today or not.

Our road is passable today, but it's low priority for plowing and there are some steep hills that can ice up. This section by my house is too narrow for two cars to pass, so one car has to pull off to the side somewhere.

I just checked the NWS Public Information Statement. According to this, I should have much more snow. Now I'm afraid to go out of my neighborhood.

Maybe we will have an extra mild January to make up for this December.... sometimes that has happened... I'm going to think positive.

Its STILL snowing here - although lightly. It was only supposed to linger on the coast. Heck, I'm 50 miles inland!!

I can't believe the difference between your house and mine. What is there, 5 miles between us, and I got at least 8 inches. I was shoveling for more than an hour this morning to get the driveway bare. 3a isn't bad though. Since we really are hovering right at freezing, it's staying pretty clear.

Hope everyone has a easier time with this storm than the last.

Wow, Claire, that road is spotlessly clear! But... is it a dirt road? My monitor is on the dark side, so I can't quite tell.

Here, they wait HOURS to plow. Then, they leave the plow about an inch above the road, because they don't want to have to replace the plow edges. At least that's what my police officer friend told me (and the police are just as unhappy with the city's plowing as the residents are - after all, the police have to drive too!). So the result is a nice layer of packed snow, which of course ices over nicely. What a joy to drive on, especially in the hills of New England.

I live about a half mile from the city boundary, and most times you can tell exactly where that boundary is - because suddenly the road is clear and dry! The city was on the defensive last year when residents were very vocal in their complaints about plowing, with the city saying they do the best they can, especially in my end of town, which is a much higher elevation. My question to them is why the town next door, which gets the same snow as we do a half mile over, can clear their roads so much better.

Wow, am I bummed. I was looking for some info on Webb Mountain, which is the park about a half mile from me. I was looking for elevation info, etc., and was going to post that I'm at a pretty high elevation and hence my fear of driving in snow with the hills and lack of plowing, etc.

Well, I just found out that 300-acre Webb Mountain Park was purchased from a great-uncle of mine. Sheesh. I knew someone in the family owned "some" land up this way, but being raised by city-dwellers going back for generations, just thought it was a few acres. Now I see that this huge park used to belong to my family! Argh! Why didn't my grand-mother stay closer to this side of our family? And why didn't they leave some of the land to the family? I just need an acre or two, lol, really...

I'm going to make some hot chocolate and dwell on the mysteries of life....

Lisa: Maybe it's because I'm right on the coastal bank, and the NE winds off the water were very strong last night (It's eery lying in bed and hearing those winds and the waves). I imagine the winds brought warmish air with them.

I didn't go to the dump today, so I don't know how much snow fell just away from the coastal bank, but it's probably like you have.

Dee: Yes, that's a dirt road. With the small amount of snow, traffic probably cleared it fast - there was no sign of plowing.

I understand exactly how you feel - I've been told my grandmother once owned a lot of property along the Charles River in Boston, and lost it by not paying back taxes.

We got 12" here and it has not stopped lightly snowing all day--even heavier now. But at least it's light and fluffy. It's the snow + ice tomorrow that has me chewing my nails.

I'd say we have about a foot or maybe a few inches over in my part of central NH. It snowed from midafternoon Friday right through dusk yesterday, and started up again just before 8 this morning. What we got yesterday was light and fluffy and quite dry - no good for snowballs or snowmen, but great sledding as long as we didn't mind getting face-fulls of snow on the way downhill. I haven't left the house today though, except for a brief trip 1/2 mile down the road, since my small light car doesn't have a whole lot of clearance and my road hasn't been plowed since some time yesterday. I did get to drive my husband's 4 wheel drive truck with the heavy duty snow tires on Friday in the middle of the storm, and wasn't that nice! It cruised right through everything without any problems.

The storekeepers who are counting on this weekend's business have my sympathy!

Here in northern Litchfield County, we got 9 in on Fri -- the roads were terrible. Then about 5-7 inches on Sunday. It snowed on and off all day. But it was a lighter, more powdery snow. The good sport that I am, I shoveled the path to my feeder and my composter, in addition to the driveway and the front walk. The birds are flocking to it this morning. The roads are too icy for me to drive. Ahh, winter.... how many more months til gardening?
