Funny you should ask this now. Yesterday I was congratulating myself on getting all my bulbs in the ground in a timely manner, when I opened my garage and what was looking at me but a box of bulbs from John Scheepers, just waiting to be planted. You see, I didn't buy a lot of bulbs for myself this year, but I placed a large order for one of my gardening customers. Now, I got all of *hers* planted, lol, but I guess the few that I bought for myself kind of slipped my mind!

I've got about 50 daffs, 50 or 100 crocus, some cyclamen and dog-tooth violets to get in the ground, as well as about 60 tulips to pot up. I guess that's not too bad. If it makes you feel any better, I usually order hundreds and hundreds of bulbs for myself and at this point in November am usually nowhere near done (if even started, lol!). I have actually planted daff bulbs in January. Not much fun.

Carole, if you do a search - maybe it was on the bulb forum??? - I know there was a thread or two about augers that may be helpful. I haven't tried one yet. It took me five years to finally just get a dibble. I'm a bit of a procratinator (if you didn't figure that out by my planting daffs in January, lol!)

An auger can make the job of planting a large number of bulbs MUCH easier. You need a sturdy drill if you're planting a lot, some of the very light duty drills will crap out if too much of a load is placed on them. I didn't buy any bulbs this year, but when I do it's usually a couple hundred at a time. You can buy an auger at just about any garden center.

And no, it's not too late to plant them.

In answer: No.

The elementary school-aged kids have a Fall fundraiser selling bulbs. They get delivered next week. I can't remember what or how many I ordered, but my checkbook tells me it'll be a full day. BTW: The grower decides when to send the bulbs based on proper planting time. It'll be interesting to see who it is and where they're from.

I've been averaging 5,000 to 8,000 bulbs/year for the last three years but I didn't really feel like planting them this year so I only planted 1,000 Yellow Mammoth Crocus in the beds in front of my house. Actually, these are replacements for the ones that I had there last year. They put on a great show in the spring, then the squirrels finally found them and started digging them up. I was checking around in the dirt in late summer and couldn't find a single one. The squirrels got them all. I'm hoping next year, the record acorn crop from this year will keep them away from the crocus bulbs. Between the squirrels and deer, I've had to limit my bulbs to daffodils, grape hyacinth, and hyacinth. They are the only ones that the critters leave alone. Thanks for your advice and encouragement. The 700 minor bulbs I am not too worried about, since I can shovel several nice large areas and spread them in it for a nice effect. It's the 200 daffs that I bought from John Scheepers that concern me. I do have an 18 V drill, so I will stop at HD tonight and buy an auger.

My "minds eye" always get ahead of my work ethic on these projects...

Thought I was done but just got back from our local CHRISTMAS TREE SHOP who had their bulbs, good assortment still left for 75% OFF! Well... I could not resist of course ... so with the good weather forecast for this weekend in zone 6a/b ... guess I'll be busy!
