Baking Soda on Lawn

After reading previous posts, I still have a question: Does baking soda hurt the soil permanently or just temporarily? Will it help to apply a thin layer of compost after killing the dollar weed in the St Augustine lawn? What is the next step after that? A good organic fertilizer? Suggestions? I am killing the dollar weed in sections. I tried to pull it, but it is tightly woven into the grass and it is spreading everywhere.

I have not tested putting pure baking soda in soil. I have mixed it with water to kill fungi and it does work. Also, I was told that BS are non-targeted meaning it will kill anything. So yeah, you might want to restore the good organisms you have killed by putting compost. Some people use ACT and have had good results.

Hello all.

I had a few small patches of Crabgrass trying to invade my Bermuda grass.
I keep my Bermuda grass height at 1 inch.
On the evening of June 5th, 2007 I followed the "dusting with baking soda procedure" posted by dchall san antonio.
The Crabgrass was eliminated by noon June 7th 2007.
No damage to my Bermuda grass.

The Crabgrass is gone.

val appears to be talking about the *lawn* here. I would not be too worried about pesticide residues if was only the lawn, BUT there could be a concern with persistent herbicides in the cotton gin compost that could potentially harm a lawn. I would simply ask the sellers if they have had any complaints of problems caused by the compost. If not this is probably a good choice - in bulk it will be cheaper than bags from HD. As for the HD bags, check the contents before buying as some of these products are hit and miss as far as quality. You may end up with bags of topsoil or other muck with low organic content, which does not meet the definition of 'compost' in my book.

Crab grass does not regrow from a few bits of root left in the soil, but it will grow from seeds that are in that soil. If you burned Crab grass with a torch it would not regrow, although if there were seeds in the soil they may well germinate. Crab grass is an annual thaqt produces one plant per seed and that one plant when killed is dead. If you did have new growth from any roots left in the soil or if a plant did regrow after being torched then you do not have Crab grass.

Baking soda is a much lower pH than soda ash. You would know if it got on an open cut. OUCH! The store is correct and in reality both products are real cheap compared to any other pool chemical. You could go to Costco and load up on a 50# bag of baking soda and accomplish your task. Just know that the ability to affect pH or alkalinity is less with soda ash so more is needed. Soda ash may be more but you'll use less.

Oh, my.... The alchemy of cookie textures... -Baking soda makes cookie spread and brown more. TOO much makes the cookie bitter. -Baking powder produces lighter-colored and puffier cookies. -Other leaveners include steam (from the liquids) which causes the cookie to puff. -The leavening in most cookies is minimal, so you will change the chemical reactions by leaving them out or altering the amounts. -Salt.... Even a pinch of salt will bring out the sweetness, so I wouldn't leave it out entirely. There is a big interplay between salt and sweetness. It will also improve the bitterness - especially with all that cocoa powder in the recipe. If you are avoiding salt are you also using a sodium-free baking soda (which would account for the doubled amount)? -Too much peppermint can cause the cookies to burn. - I would make marzipan - or something like this: Almond Marzipan Cookies - http://allrecipes.com/recipe/230457/almond-marzipan-cookie/ -Grainlady

Hmmm? What's this about baking soda killing crabgrass? I was unable to find the "dusting with baking soda procedure" thread, but i have horrible problems with crabgrass. Do tell! Do tell!
