Crabgrass is taking over
Comments (28)My Crabgrass Fight results.. First I suggest searching Youtube for videos for ideas.. Not only did I have crabgrass last summer, but grubs too.. in Fla. with my St. Augustine grass. It was worst this year. Killed the Grubs with chemicals.. then applied Milky Spores... for the next 10-15 years new grubs. So.. this spring I used a blow torch on the crab grass.. it seems to have killed it... I waited a few weeks.. then applied 20% vinegar, diluted to 10%.. with a squirt of liquid soap. In this heat.. it cooked the old and new crabgrass within 2 hours. I waited a couple of weeks.. and used my blow torch on the dead crabgrass.. It looks like this worked... Plus I figure it killed the seeds.. Now I will fill in the low spots from digging out the stuff last year.. with top soil/mushroom compost.. then re-sod over it. As far as the Baking SODA.. youtube shows different test.. they apply soap/ unsulfered black molasses spray first.. then dust the Baking Soda. The bigger problem is my Bahia Grass.. even the Vinegar & Blow Torch is not working.. My worst weed growth is in the low spots.. where the water kills the grass.. They say.. Weeds grow in poor soil.. add compost .. adding such over crabgrass is suppose to kill it.. but I have not tried that. This week I did add 4 cu ft of mushroom compost/topsoil dressing to my low spots.... and where I burned weeds out.. Cut your lawn low.... do not let these weeds go to seed.. Search Google for 20% Vinegar... even my local Sod Supplier did not know this today. You can sod over the Vinegar spots in 2 hours, as it breaks down. PS:; Lawn services are worthless... IMHO. Those who use a regular sprinkler system seem to have less weeds and better lawns.....See MoreCrabgrass Baking Soda & Bermuda
Comments (5)Just wanted to add something about the crabgrass ... both crabgrass and Alexander grass seem to thrive in only a couple areas in my yard. Both of those areas are partially shaded ... my Bermuda lawn is also a bit thin in those areas. The rest of my yard in full sunlight for the whole day does not contain any of the undesirable grasses and the lawn looks great. Should I be mowing more often and clipping off a bit more at the time to bring the grass length shorter ?...See Morebaking soda on crabgrass in the north
Comments (3)Well, finally got to trying this out. My preliminary report on the baking soda: It definitely harms the crabgrass. After just one day (which included a rain shower), the crabgrass on the right has blackened and somehow shrunk. Before this, it was about the same size and state of health as the one on the left. Here is another patch. It's obvious which area was treated with baking soda. Conclusion. I would say it works, probably to the point where, if it doesn't kill the plant it might stunt it to prevent germination. HOWEVER, it is unsightly - who wants all that white powder hanging around? - and can only be used on areas where it can't harm desirable plants and other organisms. It is better than chemicals? In my view, yes. In the end, as skoot_cat said, a nearby patch treated with a mix of white vinegar and salt in hot weather was completely annihilated, turning black within hours and has not seen any regrowth in two weeks. The mixture also worked on dandelions and some creeping stuff. While the dead plants aren't exactly pleasing to the eye, vinegar and salt is better than white powder everywhere. No idea on long-term effects on the soil (because of the salt) but the area treated is not used for anything but occasionally parking a car there (actually belongs to my neighbor but she's given me free reign to abuse her weeds). I guess, in the end, if you want environmentally friendly weed removal that looks good, the only thing that works is elbow grease. I've returned to pulling these suckers up by hand....See Moresoap, baking soda for crabgrass
Comments (6)I'm the one that has been spreading that news. Several years ago I had heard of this approach. I presented it here and on other forums but nobody ever tried it. Finally Cactus tried it and took a lot of pictures. I'd link you to the forum where he presented it but that's not really polite and I'm pretty sure GW blocks links to that forum. Here's a link to the youtube video that really shows how to do it. How much soap and molasses has been figured out by Cactus. Suffice it to day baking soda will kill crabgrass in a day or two; HOWEVER, it might also kill your grass. The results are not in for all grasses but for St Augustine, it works GREAT! St Aug is only slightly affected by the baking soda. Subsequent photos posted by Cactus show the St Augustine recovering nicely after 30 days. After Cactus' report hit the forum, Andy tried it on his grass in MA. He reported that the baking soda test killed about 75% of his northern mix grasses. So there is good news here for northern gardeners. If you are not worried about the surrounding grass, like in a flower bed, baking soda will kill crabgrass every time. The reason for the soap and molasses is to pretreat the hydrophobic blades of crabgrass so the baking soda will stick....See MoreKimmsr
