Extreme Heat, Wilting Leaves, and Overwatering
Comments (6)Do a test on one of the movable plants. When the plant is wilting in the sun but the mix still feels moist, move it into the shade for 15 - 30 minutes. If it perks up without water, then clearly the issue is the direct sun...rather than a need for water. I've done this "test" with several friends and family members to convince them not to overwater their plants. We've had four days over 100F (108F on Saturday, 106F on Sunday), and I haven't watered my #5 containers of 5-1-1 since Friday morning when I fertilized. I find that if I keep the containers shaded from that intense mid-afternoon sun, my peppers won't droop. I just angle nursery flats on the southern side of the pots. Comments (8)My corn seeds from last year were still good so I planted them in a small raised bed, probably taking 4x5 of the 4'x8' bed. The rows/plants are probably too close together, but it worked last year. I put a trellis in the other section to grow beans that can then grow over to the corn as a natural trellis. Last year I also put a sweet potato in the bed and after the corn and beans were gone I had a nice sweet potato harvest. Probably too much for one bed, but I like to maximize what little space I have, and it worked pretty well. Unfortunately, this year I accidentally left the corn seed package out overnight after sowing and the bloody squirrels didn't even leave me a tip. Plus there is something absolutely ravaging my poor corn, chewing up the leaves and new growth. I think its a beetle of some sort but have yet to see it in action. The irony is that there is 1 or 2 plants that don't seem to be bothered at all. Blind luck of placement? Naturally untasty? I'll have to keep an eye out....See MoreAnyone in St. Pete or Tampa want a sifter or some #10 containers?
Comments (9)Tom My yard/garden looks REALLY bad right now. Cindee's almost an hour southeast of me. Maybe Cindee can come halfway? Snook Haven at eye75 and River Rd is an interesting place for lunch. Englewood is amazingly far from almost everything, that's why we like it :-) Denise...See MoreHigher 'P' Fertilizer for Container Grown Toms?
Comments (2)Don't get me wrong, 4% P is not low per se, but given the circumstances (5 gal bucks, nutrients washed out etc. etc.) i'd boost it....See MoreOkiedawn OK Zone 7
