Friday's Severe Weather: Tune In, It Has Begun

I came in from the garden to check the weather and see we now have a Tornado Watch in effect for many counties and several counties have ongoing Severe Thunderstorm Warnings right now.

You can click on the NWS link below to see if your county is in the watch area or the current warning areas. You can click on any county to read its forecast, and can click on any watch or warning on the forecast page to read the text of the watches or warnings.

Remember that Heather told us these weather events will pop up and develop rapidly so stay alert to changing conditions.

I'll be out in the garden until/if anything starts happening here. So far all we have down here is wind, lots of wind, and we've had it for the last several days. It is helping to dry out my soil, but in the lower garden where the soil has been really wet, the forecast rain will wipe out any drying that has occurred here the last couple of days.

Saturday's here and the threat is higher for most Oklahomans than it was yesterday. Stay safe!

Likewise I'm thankful everyone made it through ok. And from what reports I've read injuries were few. Thankful for that. They say we will be west of where the worst will be. Although our local forecasters are advising to keep an eye on the sky for a scattered severe storm. I hope everyone escapes today also. The winds will be high here for the next couple of days. They keep raising and then lowering our chances of moisture and storms Sunday and Monday. They did the same last week. Hope the storms clear out soon. I'm thinking of traveling in OK in a few weeks so hoping it is clear then. Jay

Hello Primgal--was it the Escargo that didn't work? What I did was get the classic Bug-Getta poison, but since we DON"T want that in our veggie garden because it gets in the food chain, what I am doing is making water-proof traps. I put the Bug-Getta, plus a slice of an apple inside of a recyclable container--can be anything really, as long as it's water tight. I cut a rectangular opening at the base so that snails and slugs can get in, but water can't. The opening is about one inch tall by about 2 inches wide--just enough for a slug to slither in. Make sure it's fairly level on the ground so that they'll be able to get in. The poison sits at the back of the trap, along with the apple slice. I place these traps all around the vegetables, leaning so that the bait stays inside. We've been deluged with rain, but amazingly the bait has stayed perfectly dry! So far they seem to be working. The key is to put food scraps inside with the poison, and make sure the bait can not wash into your soil.

Hi, Susan, Congrats on the first BF eggs of the season. Sounds like your garden is coming up quickly and getting ready for the BFs and Moths. I have had a female Monarch patrolling my yard several times a day, but I haven't found any eggs yet. I did plant the Trop Milkweed we got from Marilyn as well as some tuberosa I bought locally. Even though the BFs aren't fond of it, it is a good nectar plant. Everything here is slightly behind your garden. I have been working on getting all the weeds out. I transplanted a cudweed that wasn't in a good location. I have just kept it watered until it perks up and then I'll cut back so it won't cause the roots to rot. The curavassica I started from seeds is really starting to take off. And, oh, I discovered little teeny pipes on the clematitis that I got from Marilyn! Today I had to go shopping at Walmart so I stopped off at the nature center. I saw my first Buckeye, first Cloudless, and first Red banded Hairstreak. I also saw a Tiger, a Silver spotted skipper, a Monarch, a PL, a Pipevine, ETBs, Duskywings, a Reakirts Blue, and a Juniper Hairstreak on the spreading juniper they have at the entrance to the preserve. I think I saw a Henry's Elfin, but I could never get it into focus to be sure. It was small and high up in the tree. I am really enjoying this weather. I am hoping the BFs at home will start coming into the yard. The neighbor's Wild Black Cherry tree is in full bloom and perfuming the air. I also have a lilac that is beautiful and very fragrant. I have read that Tigers nectar on lilacs. So far, though, haven't seen anything nectaring on it except White-lined sphinxes. There are quite a few of those around right now. They really like the little lemon tree which is covered with sweet smelling blooms. Everything here is on the verge of blooming. I can't wait til it explodes with color! Enjoy your first babies. So a month has flown by and we finished our second gunite shoot last week so I finally have a little extra time to give an update and post some pictures. First: There were some concerns brought to my attention about the quality of the plumbing (crossovers/heat bending and such) work so after looking into it a bit here is what I did. 1. I had 25 yards of sand and AB gravel delivered to my yard. 2. I proceeded to backfill the plumbing trenches with sand by hand/shovel and water hose until a good layer of sand was underneaththe plumbing. This took two days but I think it was worth the effort. 3. I then used a mix of AB and sand to continue filling the trenches 1/3 up, and any crossovers to get adequate support. 4. I then hauled out 30 yards of trenched dirt/rock as it was not my intention to use any of this crappy material to fill back in the plumbing trenches. 5. On the first gunite shoot I used the gunite rebound (3 or 4 yards) and lots of water to continue filling trenches. 6. The next day I used a bobcat to finish backfilling the trenches with AB gravel to grade level. 7. The plumbing has been under pressure at 40 psi for over a month with no problems. (I was told by some very reputable plumbers that setting the plumbing pressure any higher then this is a bad idea.) Undoubtably my plumbing will last for 20+ years maintainance free! :) Second: I took some extra time and expense to have the engineering firm I used send out an engineer for two on-site inspections just before each gunite shoot. It was good piece of mind for me to have the engineer on site and give final approval of the construction before gunite. Neil Anderson is the engineering firm and I am not sure if you could find one person in Northern CA who would disagree with the statement that they are the best there is. All right, onto the pictures and the progress. One week later it was time for the second gunite shoot: So I am calling it a little over half way done at this point and it has been time consuming road to get to this point as an owner builder. But I still have to say that doing an owner/build is a GREAT way to go. I would recommend it to anyone instead of using a pool builder unless you live in TX near Kelly. Then I would just use him!

nancy - it's great! the first morning tho I forgot about it being there and was confused not to see the sky out my window! I was half asleep still (still in bed) - my curtain in the bedroom is always partially pulled back. if you know the cost of the product - and the price of it being put down then you'll know what you are being charged for the carpet pull up and plywood. maybe someone could do it for a better price (the carpet and plywood). I'm sure you'll love it with the carpet out - that's what I'm hoping to do. depends on the prices tho.

Jay, It sure looks like parts of Kansas and Nebraska will have plenty of weather headaches today.

Our winds have been higher than usual all week, and I am about tired of it. It is blowing caterpillars out of the nearby woods into my garden. I was out there working on the northern edge of the garden yesterday, and it was raining caterpillars from the sky. I was not particularly amused.

I hope after this weekend weather system moves through that maybe we'll have a few nice, quiet days, but I haven't looked at the forecast beyond this weekend, other than to see that we have a couple of somewhat cool, though not cold, nights early next week.

Dawn we have 3 cooler nights facing us starting tonight. They keep bouncing around some with their predictions but the lowest I've seen is 37 degrees. Most are saying 39 one night and then after that upper 40's one night and then 50's for lows at least for a while. I'm going to finish potting up a tray this morning that I have been dragging my feet as I had no place for all of the plants. I will redo the covering on my large cold frame today. I will probably wait till Tuesday evening to start moving a lot of plants to it. After I fill it up that will free up some room elsewhere. I plan to plant a few late plantings or a few varieties and some flowers. Both of which I had put off because of room. I may put a few plants in the large frame even before. By covering the top good and even if we would get a light freeze with the soil temps what they are and the plants in there also I will be ok. I haven't been closing the top on the other frame but will tonight. I will continue to drop tomatoes in the ground and hopefully get several of the potato plants started from seed in the ground also. I'm going to cover the top doors of my large cold frame with poly covering. The hail broke out the glass last May. I may cover the top and bottom of the door for double insulation and put screen door plastic screen over the top for some sun block. Jay

I was glad to read on the other thread that our GW folks in Norman made it through yesterday with nothing more than some landscape damage. I was watching it closely because Larry was driving back from Eufaula and coming into the east side of the metro area just as it was starting to move towards Shawnee.

We had to visit the storm shelter around 3 this morning due to a tornado warning for Logan County. There's nothing like waking from a sound sleep and experiencing that "oh no, here we go" feeling when you realize what's going on and the adrenaline (or is just plain old fear?) kicks in. I had watched the TV coverage until around 1 when it seemed to be dying down, which obviously it did not. I don't know if there was ever an actual funnel but News9 was reporting one southwest of us and moving our way. I do know there was a tremendous amount of rain! It will be a few days before I can finish planting the garden, and that's if we don't get more today.

As much as I appreciate the better prediction and warning system we have now, I think it raises my anxiety level (a lot) when we're under the type of warning we are today when it sounds like almost a certainty that there will be a significant weather event. Especially after the devastating tornadoes of 2011. And we're in the bullseye in central OK. So I'm going to try and stay busy today to keep my mind off it, but will be paying attention when the warnings start. I hope everyone will be safe today!
