First photo attempt - Piedmont Gold

Here is my first attempt to download a photo to the forum. This is my second year Piedmont Gold in 2007.

Welcome Rena,you will never do house work again,WSing is so additive. Oh wow, green already, congratulations!At 5 pm, it is still light out,happy,happy,happy. Mary, I have used the small soda bottles before, you can tape them all together, like a 6 pack, just one piece of tape all around will keep them from falling over,they work good enough,great if you are only going to sow a few seeds. I can't tell what's going on in the first picture. Sorry. Too fuzzy. In the second picture, I've emasculated flowers as far gone as the one on the left and still gotten a good cross. If you emasculated the bud on the right at an even earlier stage, great. What I do is emasculate one or two of the most robust and best supported green buds in a cluster and wait two or three days until the other buds that were of about the same stage and in the same cluster almost open fully and indicate almost readiness to self-pollinate. Then I remove them from the cluster so the only thing left is the one or two emasculated and waiting pistils. Then I carry two, three or four blossoms over from the pollen donor plant and apply pollen using the plucked donor blossoms like Q-tips and very gently apply pollen to the receiving stigma. Then I break open the anther cones on the donor blossoms and carefully smear some more pollen on the receiving stigma. I do this two or three days in a row at about midday. Look on page 3 of This PDF and in photo number 4 ... that's about the stage of blossom that I try to emasculate then wait 2 - 3 days to pollinate. I most frequently am successful emasculating blossoms of beefsteak types like Cherokee Purple, Brandywine, etc. where the blossoms are nice fat daisies like the one with the fat pistil you show in the second picture of your original post. And yes, I like to use the potato leaf parent as the seed parent and then whatever more delicate flowered and regular leaf variety as the pollen donor. But then I've had success with Juane Flammee x Sungold and Indian Stripe x Sungold too. Just had to wait 'til the fruit showed size and color in the first and until the flowers showed cherry trusses in the second. However, either of those two crosses were detectible as successes by the aroma of the leaves almost matching Sungold. Another thing ... do a bunch of attempts on each of your pairings since not all of them will take, especially where you accidentally bruise the pistils. Also, I keep the seed from each individual cross stored separately and labeled like CP x Bradley 07A, CP x Bradley 07B, etc. just in case I got stray pollen or a no-cross on one of my attempts. qknitter - You are LUCKY! Can you shows us 'before' pics? The staples in this chair were incredibly hard to pull out. There was NO WAY I could get them out with even a less expensive tack puller. If yours come out with a screwdriver and pliers, I'm jealous. Many of mine broke as I tapped the tack puller into them. The 'real' upholsterer showed me that I had been using my tack puller incorrectly. I was just taking those sharp points and trying to wedge them under the top of the staple, and then prying them out. He grabbed a small hammer that I had in here and he used that to it the wooden handle of the tack puller and drive it up under the tack, then push on the handle to bring the staple up. 99% of them still needed to be pulled out with pliers or 'side cutters' that I have similar to what I linked below. The cutters are very sharp, so they sometimes cut the tack I was trying to pry out and the fun continued, but I was determined after making that back cushion and seeing the improvement. If your tacks come out easily, you're very lucky. The upholsterer saw my chair and said 'It's the worst type to re-do' and that's because of all the staples. I did spend hours removing them, but sewed in between sessions to rest my hands. Here is a link that might be useful: Diagonal Cutting Plier

My faux van gogh attempts

Here is the link for Slow's faux Van Gogh glass. Basically, you are painting layers of paint onto the textured side of clear glass which makes a much cheaper version of Van Gogh glass. Then you can nip it and use it in projects with the painted side down so it won't scrape off when you grout. Better to use on indoor projects, outdoors it could fade. Thank you both. I have a sunny garden that has some really tall perennials that have created a shady spot or two. My sun-loving plants have dwindled in those areas, so I thought, how about hostas. So actually, the hostas were the afterthought. I have planted Piedmont Gold, Alex Summers and Risky Business, and they are doing really well. Here is Alex Summers fighting for space. The hostas will always win out in the end. They are my hands-down favorite plants. I've never gone into the garden and talked to my plants before, but I find myself talking to my hostas. They are now covered by about a foot of snow here in Minneapolis. Looking at their photos helps me get through winter. I hope it helps you too.

Thank-you lois your pictures are lovely! Welcome & post more if you have them! I joined last spring & still haven't had the time to learn the posting pix thing. Seeing everyones pictures on this snowy day has given me the kick I needed to try to study up on this. Never been real strong on computer skills my self, h-ck still haven't got the VCR working yet :)~Dot

congrats.. and welcome to the wonderful world of posting pix.. i have been known to post a few ... lol ...

i personally don't like the clickable thumbnails.. because of the machinations i have to go through to open them.. since my pop up blocker blocks them ... i prefer resizing them to a better size.. about 640 x 480 ... and just posting them directly into the post buy copying the TAG LINE at photobucket .... but huge pix cause all kinds of word wrap problems ...

anyway .. you do what you want to do .. you surely aren't here to make me happy about it.. lol ... it is better to actually post them.. than to worry about what some other idiot [me...lol] thinks about them ...

Thanks, Phil and Dot. I'm surprised you're getting snow in Zone 7, Dot. From the perspective of Zone 4, Zone 7 seems like the tropics.

Ken, I had actually tried to follow Caliloo's instructions for downloading pictures using the TAG line that had been posted on the forum, but wasn't able to get it to work. I don't know if Photobucket has changed its page set-up or if I'm just e-impaired. The Thumbnail section of the instructions worked for me. When I have a little time, I'll try once again.

I've never joined a forum of any kind in the past. This is really fun. I signed up on Hallson's forum also. I also joined the local hosta society this year. I began keeping records of when I planted each of my hostas, where I got them, how they're doing, etc. Now I see that I better be counting eyes and measuring, too. It's funny how something like hostas can just grab you. This happened about 15 years ago with sailing, too. My two great passions in life. Hope to talk to you all again soon. Lois

Hi Lois
When I open up photobucket, I no longer see/have a 'tag' line to click. I click the line under my picture that says HTML. I don't know if everyones page is like that or not. If you have a HTML line, try clicking that. I don't need to click the box under my picture and then go to the bottom of the page and click 'generate HTML and IMG codes'.

they would be ... the yellow gold standard from wade.. the name escapes me.. and i ain't walking out there this morning... one of the wades names ... chesterland gold or something... that doesn't seem right .... anyone have the other wade names ... its not an 'american' ...
