Hosta surface roots - freeze thaw

I went out today and took this photo of my gold ventricosa sport 'Crystal Fountain' known for aggressive roots. Sure enough, just below the surface, less than an inch were these new hairy roots growing up.

Ventricosa and sieboldiana can often have roots pushing up out of the ground for both new and established plants, due to their root vigor. Interestingly, both also easily suffer root dieback due to freeze/thaw and low moisture.

There were no new growth tips formed as of this morning. The clump is centered at upper right. This plant is 2' X 3' high and across after 3 years, probably 6-10 eyes. Those new hairy roots are 6-8 inches long, right under the soil surface.
