My garden is planted!!!

I am 15 different kinds of excited, my garden is ready to go! I'm growing everything in containers again, with hopes that this year will be far more successful than last year. Here's what I've got:

6 varieties of tomato that Jo so awesomely gave me: Celebrity, Eros Gold Zlatolaska (which I refer to as Lusty Sluts because I can't remember Zlatolaska), Siberian Pink, Green Zebra, Little Lucky, and Juan flamee.

Radishes

Carrots (Chantenay short n' sweet)

ONE leftover onion from last year (that guy is a trooper, he survived mountains of snow that covered my containers. I don't have the heart to eat him)

Mints: Spearmint and catnip (for my cats, of course)

Lemon Verbena

I've also planted marigolds, zinnias, and nasturtiums for the critters (to attract beneficials and get rid of annoyances), and my Daylily is just happy as a clam, ready to put out flowers.

Now if I can just decide what to plant in the front beds this year...

I have so much to do this week, my planting is gonna hafta wait, grrrr! My daughter has a birthday party that requires some costuming, and I have gobs of homework.
At least I can say I am at a point in life where all my activities are things I WANT to be doing! I just wish I could do them all at once....
Congrats to you, it is an awesome feeling! We had one lonely garlic that survived...I can't wait to see what it looks like! and so far I planted mulch in my front beds, lol, and 3-4 small perennials. But I layered newspaper and mulched just to be done with that and give more time to the veggies! HAVE FUN!

I've totally felt that way lately too! Every time I looked at my sad containers, I kept thinking that I needed to plan and plant. But the past few months have been primarily about taking care of my parents and starting back to school. Luckily, most of what I need to do between now and when school's out is pest control and watering. No harvesting, really, and if I decide to expand (which I reeeeeally want to do), I can do that over the summer for some fall planting. :)

I agree about the rose and clematis suggestion being the clematis freak that I am, but I would not recommend Sweet autumn clematis as it reseeds with wild abandon in my garden and is considered an invasive weed in some areas--not to mention the fact that it may or may not have any scent to the flowers depending on how it was grown. If grown as a cutting from a plant that has fragrant flowers it will have a fragrance. If grown from a seed of a fragrant plant, it may or may not have any fragrance. An often overlooked clematis that has a fragrant bloom that I love is clematis viticella Betty Corning. The fragrance isn't one that will knock you over but is noticeable enough that I pick boquets of the flowers to bring into the house and enjoy the fragrance. It will rebloom if you cut it back hard after the initial first bloom cycle, is covered with flowers once it gets mature, and the flowers are sterile (no viable pollen)so there is no issue with it reseeding with wild abandon unless you purposefully pollinate it with another clematis' pollen. Mine is still blooming now intermittently now even with the frosts we have had. Here is a picture of a bloom from last week.

I'm so sorry about your plants! Here in FL, we are just getting into the growing season, so if you want, I could grab a couple of tomato starter plants for you and send them. I'm pretty sure I could find some cucumber seeds too. But I think you're right about it being too cold in Birmingham. You could grow some winter crops, though. Let me know when you're back, because I'll be happy to send you some more plants.

Sure. We followed the plans for the top of this cold frame made of PVC http://www.pvcplans.com/coldframe.htm He made the bottom to fit right inside of the bed and we buried it some. We covered it with plastic drop cloth from the painting section of Lowes. Next year I will have time to plan ahead and order some thicker plastic but we were on a time crunch. I think if I had it to do over again, we would have used 1/2" pvc instead of the 3/4". We weren't able to get enough clips to hold the cover on (that's why one isn't covered) and if we had used the smaller pvc, we could have used those large 2" black binder clips to hold the plastic on. That's what I used when I lived in WA and built a hoop house. here's a link to show you what clips I'm talking about http://www.officedepot.com/a/products/838056/Office-Depot-Large-Binder-Clips-2/?cm_vc=C5203 My husband doesn't really draw out plans, kinda builds as he goes (drives me nuts but who am I to complain if he does the job) We had to try and figure out how to cover the ends since we didn't have any more clips and needed to be able to get in easily to water. I thought of lattice and we found some plastic lattice with smaller openings. On the side that gets the most wind, we covered the lattice with plastic and stapled through small cardboard pieces to help secure it. We have a heavy duty staple gun so hubby had to push down the ends on the outside with his multi tool so I wouldn't get poked. I suggested shorter staples but.... Then we just poked a few holes through the plastic and zip tied it to the frame. The other side of the lattice we left uncovered so that the plants would get some air. You could cover it but we ran out of time and it seems to work just fine. Our garden is right by the fire station on a busy road, we even had a couple of people stop and come see them and ask how we built them. If you need close up pictures of any of it, let me know. I have a couple on my blog but I could email more. Something else we did, since we get so much bloody wind, I tied zip ties around the bottom of the frame and stapled them to the box. One good gust when we were putting the ends on almost sent the whole thing flying. So far seems to be holding on just fine. Here is a link that might be useful: my blog

Thanks, I am less stressed since my mom took over some of the costume stuff, my almost 6 year old asked for a princess party, so of course they need princess dresses, and my mom loves to make stuff like that for them.
I am studying humanities at OU, they have an online program, or I would never go back to school. I may get a master's in Museum Studies...we shall see if I am up for more school. And depends on if we have another baby in the next couple years. I have a lot going on, but I am enjoying it. It's true what they say, "do what you love then it doesn't seem like work."
Wish I was out for the summer, I have two classes so I can try to catch up....
We should chat at the Spring Fling!

Jammie - I hear ya on that! I am an IT manager going for an English degree. Not only do I want to write (not that you need a degree for that), but I want to be a teacher. Keep going, do what you love!

I'm studying dietetics through K-State's online program, but I have to take biology and chemistry classes at Tulsa Community College. My psych degree is from OU, though - great school!!!

I am HOPING beyond hope that I can go to the spring fling. I just realized that my finals are the following Tuesday and Wednesday, so while I'm planning on going to the spring fling, I realize that I may not be prepared enough for my finals, and that has to take priority if I'm going to take a day off to prance down to Norman for a day of fun.

True, true. I am stressing right now to get this HW done before this wknd. I just got my associates at TCC last semester.
Well, I hope it works out for you, if not I am sure we can find another time...I will send you an email with my FB and tell you about nanowrimo and other writing stuff.
