Sweet Potato slips

Has anyone started sweet potato slips? This time last year I had slips but have not even started any yet this year. I have picked through the potatoes to fine the ones I want to get slips from. It seems as if I have been a day late and a dollar short on everything this year.

I have, Larry. It sure took a long time for them to sprout and they're just now doing so. Of course, it could be the variety and these came from the grocery store. They might have a retardant on them.

I guess you can start them and let what may come!

Bon, I did not have enough slips last year and bought plants to put out. I was not happy with the plants, plus they cost more. The plants also did not produce as well as the slips I started. I think I may try some on the heat mat to see if I can speed up the sprouting. I have sprouted some ornamentals from last year, they are under the lights but not on the heat mat, but look as tho they are going to produce plenty slips for the flower beds.

No one seems to have answers for you so I'll give you my thoughts. Container planting for veggies isn't one of my favs for suggestions, never had much success with that method other than possibly a small cherry tomato plant for minimum production. That being said, a max of one plant per 5 gal container is your best bet, I say this because later on when the pepper or sweet potato plant grow large it will keep you pretty busy watering the plants. Also black containers aren't the best color as they will get very hot in the summer sun and roast the roots on the inner wall, so it's best to shade the container portion. And 25 gal containers? would not like to move those when the time comes. Sorry for the dismal report, just too used to planting veggies in the ground where moisture, temperature, and daily attendance is less cumbersome (though weeding part is easier). Good luck!

Isn't it too late to plant Sweet Potatoes? I grew mine by putting a potato into a glass, held up by toothpicks, and letting the slips grow from there. I cut the long vines into sections with at least three nodes, plus a long tip shoot. I put those into water to get some roots (they root in just a few days), and then planted them out. My purples are going mad, but my reds aren't growing much at all.

No kidding. :-) Probably nothing in the garden is as frost tender as sweet potatoes, not on the vegetable side of things anyway. Right down to digging them before the tops get even slightly nipped. I struck 18 slips this afternoon; so we shall see what we shall see. Most of them were off what remained of my own from last summer's garden, mostly pretty small. Hopefully they have perhaps a leg up on local adaptation. I decided that a dozen and a half was enough. If they make, I will have plenty of tubers, if they don't, I won't have wasted so much space. My late mother and several of her deceased siblings grew sweet potatoes well in NW Iowa. Several bought their slips but more than one simply stuck a store bought sweet potato in a glass of water, stuck it in a window, harvested the resulting slips and planted them out once weather warmed. Mom's side of the family was known to have green thumbs up past their elbows. What I inherited doesn't begin to reach that far! I think I am going to cheat and lay down black landscape fabric to warm the soil up hotter and earlier. I intend to raise the bed like one does for garlic, too. Now with stay at home orders from the Governor, I am going to be short on soil amendments, too. I was going to get those next week. Out of the question now. Just have to make do with what I have I guess.

Truly, I just want the vines! I have so much space and have some special places for climbing vines and plan on using these to fill up the gaps. Maybe I'll have a few sweet potatoes to eat, too. :D

I have placed chitted sweet potatoes in the water yesterday only. I hope they will be ready to go into ground by mid May. I have lot of the little slender sweet potatoes left from the last years harvest were sitting in garage. I noticed some sprouts on them last week, then thought to put their feet in water to give them quick start. -Chandra

I have mine almost ready to go into the ground. The Red Wine Velvet that George gave me are a little slower than the Beuregard, but all will go in before too long. If I have too many, do you want me to try mailing you some? It will be the Beuregard as I have more of them.

I would love to have some Beauregard slips. I stuck 4 Beauregard slips in potting soil yesterday hoping to get slips from slips. I have 4 or 5 potatoes starting to chit, I have no idea how many slips I can get of them in a short time.

I have some ornamentals that bloom better than any other sweet potato I have grown, they seem to be doing very well producing slips. I have already had two people wanting plants from them, and should have even more to share if anyone would like some. I have no idea what name they are, DW just saw two plant in a nursery south of FT. Smith last year and bought both of them with no tag in them. These are the two plants I posted about last fall that produced 20lbs. of potatoes. I have not eaten any of them, they seem hard and dry. If anyone is interested I can post a picture of them from last year. The vines are not too pretty, but they produced 3 or 4 times as many flowers an my other ornamentals.

Thanks for the offer. I saw beauregard slips yesterday at Norman Farmer's market, but did not buy as I have no space for them until I harvest garlic. Last year I bought beauregard plants from WM, they did pretty good. I will buy them next week from FM. -Chandra
