Whoops! Guess it didn't stay at the top for very long!

Shame, shame on you, Susan. A LOT of newbies don't understand the mechanics of this format and Seedmama was only trying to lend some helpful information. Dawn has always been so good to keep us forwarned and those warnings are very valuable to quite a few of us.

I hope they all get a chance to read this now before it slides too far down.

It is indeed very thoughtful of Dawn to post all the weather alerts here to get the word out, but I'd strongly encourage everyone to either use a NOAA weather radio or check your local NWS forecast page first if you know there is potential for hazardous conditions in your area. The weather radio will broadcast fire warning and evacuation information as it comes in and will probably be the earliest warning you can get. It will tone alert as well, so you don't have to be at your computer to get the message. They even make handheld ones that you can carry with your while you're outside.

Do people update the alerts as time changes things? With as often as the weather and fire changes around here, it seems impossible to keep up.. especially since sometimes the watches/warnings/risks and reality is different. Wind this week, fires, frosts last week.. sheesh this weather.

Are the titles of these posts dated with date and time? That might help people tool

osucowboys405...yes they are. Each post, including the beginning thread has a date and time stamp. That said, it works on GMT, not our CST or CDT, but one can adjust for the hour or two difference but the date stays the same.

LOL, Miraje! Yes, it's pretty obvious that you live and breathe the meteorology and GOOD advice!!! I do have a NOAA radio, but I haven't found the tone alert button. (I'll look again.) Although a very useful tool, it's just a bit irritating when it goes off at all hours (and often!) when something is broadcast for a county that's neighboring but miles away.

That being said, folks, we live in Oklahoma. Don't know of any other state that has an infrastructure like ours because we have such DRAMATIC weather and atmosphere swings. One can NEVER have too many options for updates. Over the years, I've found myself often checking here for not only garden advice & chat, but Dawn, Jay and Carol's "real time" updates. It's a "one-stop shop"!

Even threads with no replies begin to slide down after a while. Posting to them is the only way to keep them at the top after that happens.

Many of the (newer) weather radios are customizable in the sense that you can specify which warnings you want to sound the alarm and which ones you don't. I think you can also program it to only sound for your specific county. We're weather nerds, obviously, so we just let ours go off for all nearby counties, but at the moment we have it only sounding for tornado warnings.

As for the tone alert thing, it varies depending on the radio. Ours just has a large button on it that toggles between continuous info (all the forecasts, current conditions, etc.) and staying quiet except for the warnings we want. It just takes some deciphering of the instructions to program it the way you want, which is unfortunately not the most user-friendly thing ever. My fiance programmed his grandmother's radio for her, lol.

Oh, Paula, I didn't mean that in a negative way. I was only trying to point out that after the post was written that several of the newly posted threads were pushed down the page. I have no idea how that happened because I don't think there is a forum moderator here. Or if there is one, I have no clue why it would have been sent on down the page.

Man, you have to be really, really careful what you say around here anymore. And, shame on you for jumping to the wrong conclusion.

When I lived in OK, I greatly depended on this board for warnings in bad weather. We could not get a signal for our weather radio, none at all. When storms started, our satellite TV would go out and our satellite internet would as well once the storms were on top of us. Long before the storms reached us, the satellite internet would slow way, way down so that we could not view radar online and, often, anything on the weather sites. However, I was usually able load GardenWeb, I guess due to it being ancient software and mostly text.

This thread reminds mme I never finished setting up my weather radio here. I started on it a couple of weeks ago but got distracted. I'll do that today!

Also, I want to clarify something that I think is causing a misunderstanding between Paula and Susan: When a new thread is posted, it's at the top of the board and will remain there until someone replies to it -- for several days. After that, it will eventually slide down the page. But, when newer threads (not replied to) are posted, the do bump the previous, unreplied-to threads down, one spot at a time. They don't go down and mix into the lower, replied-to threads. They just slide a little, in order of age.

Am I making any sense? Cuz it doesn't feel like it. LOL

Susan must have seen a couple of newer unreplied-to threads ahead of this unreplied-to thread and thought it had started its slide into history when really it was still stuck at the top, just not the very tip-top. Or maybe not but that's just what I assumed happened.

Again, it fees like I'm making no sense. LOL Hopefully, someone knows what I'm trying to say and can translate. After I have more coffee, I won't even know what I was saying!

If you live in an area where you get no weather information, you can always scroll down the first page. Dawn makes her weather reports clear, and any of us can bump them up, including Dawn.

I would like to see new forumers post. Don't worry about being criticized, don't worry about feeling stupid, just ask your question. Those of us who have been here for ever and ever can guide you, or sometimes post to you individually.

If I want to take notes about a post, and am very busy when I see it, I will bump it up, and read it more thoroughly later.

I really appreciate the weather warnings. I have good availability to weather reports, but I often watch recorded shows and national stations. Since I don't necessarily sit down to the TV when the local news is on, I am not always aware of the weather warnings. I had no idea on Thurs. that we were under a fire ban. I was told that we were not even supposed to grill on our charcoal or gas grills. I do pop in here at times when I don't turn on the TV. Dawn, your reports are very helpful, but with a Thanks, we can always bump them right back up.

I noticed this thread slipping but no replies. It was slipping below threads with replies. Like Tigerdawn stated after a while even threads with no replies drop down. And the only way to keep them at the top is too reply to them. Jay

I wonder if we put, in caps, "STICKY" which means that a post always stays at the top of the page, that would help. Worth a try anyway. I know the GW does not operate that way. It may also have something to do with the number of posts on the first page. This is a very active forum with lots of people posting new posts. Maybe after so many new posts, they relegate the older, unreplied to posts toward the bottom. Who knows.

As Jay said, this has happened with a lot of new posts lately for some reason.
