Thursday's Weather: Here It Comes Again!

Spring is here and so is the hazardous weather.

Our forecast in southern OK for the Thursday-Friday time frame is much like Monday's, only worse. For us, here's what is on the "menu": heavy rain, possible flooding, possible tornadoes and up to baseball-sized hail. Oh, and a lot of wind shear, which just makes it worse. Well, doesn't that just figure!

I am going to try to plant tomato plants today anyway, so at least if the hail arrives, it will have some new tender vegetation to smash to a pulp. (sigh) Actually, though, if I postponed spring planting every time hail was in the forecast, we'd never have a garden at all.

We are "warming up" for tomorrow's weather with some light rain and thunder here this morning.

So, who else has an ugly forecast like ours?

Dawn the weather is NOT funny at all. I hate this part of spring but am always so glad for the warm up. But you are making me chuckle reading your post! lol.

You are so RIGHT that in this part of the country if we waited for a really good sounding forecast we would never do anything at all. Go ahead and plant to your hearts content and then just pray for it to all miss us again. It is about all we can do.

Actually I am getting to sort of wish it would rain a little bit. I had to water my plantings late yesterday since we only got one dozen drops on Monday.

How is your mom? I was thinking of you yesterday assuming you were in Dallas since I didn't see you had been on here.

Thanks for asking. Mom is hospitalized, but my sis is supposed to bring her home today. No definitive diagnosis yet, but they still think it is cancer and more tests are scheduled. I'm hoping to stay home all day today and get gardening stuff done, but if my sister or brother calls and wants me to come down, of course I will drop everything immediately and go. Since it is planting season, I'm trying to split my time between here and there. Otherwise, I'd just pack and go and stay for a week or two.

I was gone most of yesterday. As much as it seems like "spring is here", it has REALLY arrived in the D-FW metroplex. The bluebonnetse have started blooming down there. While on our way down there yesterday, a huge piece of steel came flying up off the roadway and took out our windshield on I-35 near Denton. So, first thing tomorrow a.m., the truck goes to get a new windshield. It's always something. : )

Steve LaNore starting talking yesterday about the potential for very severe weather here April 3-4, and the NWS sounds pretty serious about it also. So, everything I do I am doing with an eye on the weather. I just know we are due for a bad hail storm here at our house. I think the last one we had that really tore up the plants was in 1999 or 2000 or 2001, so we're overdue. (Marietta has had some damage since then, but not those of us out here in the middle of nowehere.)

I had to water the plants a little yesterday morning too as the hot wind had dried them out.

We had light rain droplets earlier, and a little thunder, but not enough rain to amount to anything. It looks like it is all going east of us today.

Who know what we'll get tomorrow. Whatever it is, I hope it is something "good" like rain, and not "bad" like hail or tornadoes.

The national service weather forecast has something I've never seen for Nashville... 100% chance of Severe T 'storms! We had straight-line winds blow through Tuesday night at home and the power not only went out, it went out for as far as the eye could see, including businesses and street lights. They came on and went off all night, rather like generators were coming on and running out of power too. Strange. Stay safe Dorph. Learning kids can wait, otherwise there won't be no kids to learn. Our classes start next week. Senior seminar and Foreign policy this time around. Only 4 classes left to achieve my undergrad. It's going by so quickly. Shoot, I'm still trying to time when I'll file my intent to graduate form. I'm afraid if I do it, they'll find more classes or I'll be jinxed some other way!

It got to 92F yesterday and weatherguy claims it's gonna be 91F on both Friday and Sunday, but the lows are supposed to be in the mid-50s. It takes until very-late afternoon to heat up and then it cools right back off just as you're considering whether or not to switch on the AC. Late last night we had a brief but heavy rain - just enough to encourage that damned grass to keep on growing (I've been mowing since March and am sick of it). On the upside, the 2nd-season zucchini appears to be completely free of bugs and is cranking out beautiful, picture-perfect squashes. And the majority of large tomatoes has finally - finally! - decided to ripen up. Also, a little experiment has worked out a lot better than I ever would've thought. I was at Wal*Mart the last week of May and the garden lady was tidying stuff up. She had a bag of seed potatoes that looked way past their prime and was about to toss them into the trash, so I asked if I could have them at a reduced price. She said I could just have them, since she didn't think they were any good (in truth, they looked pretty sad). When I got home I threw the bag in a bucket and forgot about'em until two weeks later, by which time they were beyond sad and just pitiful. But, I had an unused, double-dug bed on the east side of the house just sitting there with nothing planned for it until fall (2nd garlic bed), so I planted those poor, dehydrated taters. That night the skunk that hangs out here had a merry old time in the nice, soft bed rooting about for grubs and such and of course the potatoes were scattered all over and had to be replanted. Amazingly, they grew and today I dug out a single hill - 4 pounds of potatoes! And most are the size of store-bought bakers. I nearly fell over, I was so surprised. Anyhoo, kinda got off track there but thought this might be useful for someone else.

A bit late to the tea party but IF I were drinking tea right now it would be Earl Grey. I got caught in a snowball similar to remodel creep. And yes I have real snow here but that's a different story. I had found a vintage/antique parlor sofa set a couple of months ago. I'd been looking for one for a couple of years but the ones I found were $250 and needed to be recovered. The set- sofa, rocker and straight chair- I found was $79.99. Long story but I nearly broke a leg getting to the cash register with the tag! After I saw it in daylight I took it directly to ServePro to be cleaned. $107 later it was not clean enough for me to sit on so I threw a sheet over it until I could check on upholstery. Ha! Upholstery would be over $1500 for labor. So back to Chris' idea of paint. But since my furnace is on now I decided to take the winter to decide what color. The colors in the living room are all white/cream/tan/beige and everything blends into everything else. GW decorating forum said I needed a colored rug. So I started shopping for a rug I liked, in a color that would work at a price I could afford. My existing carpet is on the replace list so I switched to looking at carpet. Found the perfect one; on line not in any store near me; $36 a yard. Plus installation. Hmmm. Need to rethink this. Room is 15x15. So when I was in Habitat I asked about carpet. One of the guys working there said he had a couple in his shop. I could have them. I should call him that night and he'd let me know the size. They were smaller than I wanted but for free........I said I'd be back up that way in 2 weeks and would pick them up. In the meantime I was cruising eBay to see what I could see. Another long story ending with me bidding more on eBay than I should have but as luck would have it, someone got in at the last 5 seconds and out bid me. Just as well, I had bid more than I really wanted to spend but the rug made my heart sing. By this time I was considering other styles of rugs and found one with a black background, cheap, so I bought it now. Fast forward to today, I went to Habitat to get the 2 free rugs that I thought I was going to pick up from this guy's shop but one was sold already and the other was $25. OK. bought it. May not ever get it clean. The rest of the story is.........I was driving down the road one day (the day I bought the parlor set) and saw this skinny horse in a dry lot. Three days later I was driving that same road and the skinny horse was still there. On my way home my truck turned into the driveway. There was a guy working by a tractor. I visited with him for a few minutes about the skinny horse, left my contact information, went home and called my vet for advice. Next morning the people called and asked if I wanted the horse. So of course I said yes and since I didn’t have a trailer could they deliver. He was eating grass in my pasture 2 hours later. So far my free horse has cost $135 for blood draw and results, $105 for the Panacur Powerpac, teeth to be done at the vet’s office (his dad will haul the horse for me) but not until after winter. I don’t want him sedated, nervous, hot and sweaty and be outside in winter weather. That will be $110. He’s eating a 50# bag of feed and 2 bales of hay a week. And the good news is, he’s gained some weight!! Oh, and I forgot to mention, he’s 30 years old. Not TOO old for me and maybe I will ride again someday if he recovers! So the carpet/rug is back on hold. The other good news, I sprayed the sofa with Awsum from the dollar store, Sucked it with the shop vac as I sprayed it with cool water from a spray bottle. Working a small area at a time, it’s getting clean. I’m waiting for the area I did today to dry to see where to go next.

Thursday's Midwest Weather....BAD!

Dang, this midwest weather! I am so looking forward to my week in CA just lounging around a pool, eating lots of fresh seafood, fresh fruit and veggies and raw oysters. I guess I better keep my fingers crossed that I don't encounter an earthquake there. A friend keeps teasing me that I brought bad weather to Iowa when I moved here. I have experienced floods, ice storms, blizzards and tornado warnings in the past two and half years I have been here.

Dawn I am so glad you were not injured when that steel took out your windshield! Oh my that sounds like it could have been very serious. I am sorry for your windshielf of course but so glad you were not seriously injured.

I remember well that hailstorm in about 2000 to 2001. It was really bad. I just pray God will keep sparing us from the BAD stuff like severe storms, tornadoes or hail. The rain would be nice if it would do it at night then clear off in the daytime...lol.

I hope they are wrong about the storms. I seem to take Oklahoma's storms more seriously than I used to. Of course now with such extensive news coverage I know better now what they can do. So I have a pretty healthy respect for them.

We do not have a cellar so closets or small enclosures have to do for us. I am one who would not go into the cellar anyway until I actually SAW the tornado barreling down on me. I have to look outside but I yell at anyone else who even gets near a window or door....lol.

I am killing time right now between appointments. Can't seem to really get into much knowing I will just have to leave again soon.

Be safe! And again I am so glad you were not hurt yesterday.

Whoa, Dawn . . that sounds pretty scary!! I am also so glad that you weren't hurt. I'm praying that everyone makes it through this next round safely.

It was scarey, but we survived. Luckily, with something like that, it happens so fast that you mostly don't have time to be scared until it is all over.

The big piece of steel came very close to coming through the windshield, so I feel blessed that we weren't hurt.

It has been raining here for an hour or so now, so I guess the "bad weather" day is starting already. I did notice that yesterday the NWS went ahead and put a large portion of the state under a flash flood watch, so I guess that's that they call a clue.....
