Dawn, TLC on Memorial and Santa Fe is usually considered one of the nice nurseries...their prices usually are too ;)! I actually like to shop at Farmer's Grain on 1st and Broadway in Edmond too.

Horn's at NW Expressway and Classen always has very nice plants, as does Satterlies on May and about 72nd??? However, Satterlies prices are much higher than Horn's. There's also a Wal-Mart and Bob Calvert's place in the Horn's area. Bob Calvert has super nice plants. Lowe's on Memorial between Penn and May usually have a nicer selection and variety than Home Depot. My favorite used to be Warren's on NE 23rd and Post Oak Road, but now Mr. Warren has passed away, O'Higgins bought it, and while they have nice plants, they don't have the variety that Warren's has. Marcum's on South 119th between (I think) May and Penn have nice perennials, too.

I got a real good deal (I thought) on the hellebore I bought last year in a 5-gallon tub at Horns for $15.95. A huge hellebore for that price is darn good, when most of the mail-order vendors sell them for that price for a 3" or 2" pot. Horn's staff are very well trained to know their stuff, too. If you just want to browse, I'd go there, but, if you're watching your pocket, I'd check on Lowe's, and sometimes you can find a good bargain at TLC, as well. One year Lowe's was selling out their daylilies because they had too many, in gal. pots 2 for $5.00. Did I buy - you bet your sweet booty!

Dawn: Where did you end up going? I thought of you as I was strolling through TLC's greenhouses wondering if you were in the masses. I sighed over several roses, but ended up taking my money to Farmer's Grain where I got a lot more for my money :) , but not roses!

Thanks for asking. If I can remember correctly we went to TLC and Horn's and then stopped in at a little somewhat rural nursery that I think was owned by Bob and Verna Scott. They had some beautiful trees there, and their own lilacs planted near the house were in bloom and looked/smelled so good! I actually didn't buy anything at all (although I wanted to)

I had fun looking at everything that was offered, and drooling over some lovely plants that were way beyond my budget.

I did point out Tomato Wall-O-Waters to my DH at Horn's and told him they'd make a wonderful Christmas gift for his wife later this year. I also told him that he should be sure to buy lots and lots of them so I can plant lots and lots of tomatoes even earlier than I did this year. I hope that was enough of a hint! Of course, it is a long time until Christmas, so I will have the chance to "hint" numerous times. LOL

I think we'll be in OKC at least twice more in the next few weeks, so I printed the list of recommended places on this thread, and hope to visit them all. I especially want to go to the farmer's market!

Sounds like you had fun shopping. Home Depot is a great place for hanging baskets for the price $5.95 for 10 inch with a great assortment. They are always beautiful and full. They also have the 24 packs of annuals if you like to plant a great assortment of plants in pots. This is what I do for many of my pots. I'm waiting on the second wave of geraniums. I also shop Horn's, TLC, and Scattlee's for those differnt types of plants that can't be found anywhere but a nursey. I use them mostly for pernnials except roses. If you're far west, go to Grandpa's greenthumb, it on nw (6100) 50th between Council and Rockwell. They have a 1/2 price sale that starts the day after Memorial Day. It's great.
I hope the hint for the Wall-0-waters works. They are a great product to have. They hinding somewhere in my garage from the last move 5 years ago probably never to be found again. LOL

Thanks for the tips on nurseries. Sounds to me like I need to be back in town for the day after Memorial Day and that sale at Grandpa's Greenthumb! :)

I think the Wall O'Waters hint will work. He usually gets me whatever I want. I should qualify that statement by saying I am generally a very frugal and practical person and don't ask for silly things. A lot of his friends at work have wives who are always asking for new cars or cruises or diamonds and such. Me, I'm always asking for things like mulch or compost or rose bushes. So, I think he comes out ahead, having a practical wife!

However I have about 100 tomato plants a year, or maybe I should say 100 plants at a time since I sometimes do a double planting...one in March for summer production and one in late June for fall production. So, I told him I wanted at least 100 WOWs. He knows me well enough to know I meant it. (That doesn't mean I'll get 100 of course, but I might.)

After all, how could I plant out "Aunt Ginny's Purple" and "Black Krim" early, and leave "Dr. Wyche's Yellow" and "Marianna's Peace" for later if I only had a few WOWs? I'd never be able to decide which to put in the ground early and which to save for later. lol lol lol Seriously, I have found them in gardening catalogs sold in a case of 36 for a fairly reasonable amount. Maybe I'll get a case of them for Christmas. If he seems to think that is a silly outlay of money, then I'll tell him a new car or diamond ring might be nice....and I guarantee you I'll get the WOWs then!!!

I'll be in OKC two more weekends in April, so plan to do some shopping!

If you're going to be back, you should check out Precure Nursery and Garden Center on Reno and Council. They sell a lot of wholesale in addition to the retail side and I think their prices reflect it. Of course, my wife used to work there so the discount I got made their prices seem even better! But they also had one of the best varieties of any nursery in the city.

I like Precure too!

I was sorry to see that Cooper's on MacArthur went out of business, I could always find things there that I couldn't find anywhere else.

I must have missed something. Someone tell me where Farmer's Grain is? I love TLC, but then again....I just love to shop for flowers1 LOL

Farmer's Grain is in Downtown Edmond on First Street. From Second and Broadway, go north one street, turn left (west) and it is a block or so down the street, just past the railroad tracks.

I find a lot of interesting perennials there. The plants are small, but they only charge 2.49 for most of them.

Has anyone tried the Farmer's Market in Norman? (apparently open only on Saturdays and ?) I've read a magazine or newspaper article that claimed that flowers were sold there. I'm living in the Tri-Cities area now, so Norman is just next door, but I've been so busy moving, settling in, planting, etc, that I've not had the time yet. Is there a good selection of Perennials? HOw about meats and other non-vegies?

It's open on Wednesday mornings, also. I happened to be there a couple of weeks ago for a meeting and didn't have time to really shop but it looked like they had lot of stuff. Would be worth checking it out.

I think I'll be going up to the OKC area next weekend, and I'm sure I'll do some plant shopping. Is TLC very expensive? Has anyone been there this season?
What other OKC locations do you recommend? My aunt said I should go to Farmer's Market.

TLC can get a bit pricey IMHO! I like Precure on 63rd street just west of Meridian. Their plants are reasonably priced and they carry lots of herbs and perennials.

If you're looking for tomatoe plants, I swear that the Belle Isle Walmart has the best looking and wider variety than I've seen so far.

Home Depot and Lowe's usually have reasonable prices on plants, too.

TLC just has a huge selection of everything, so you might want to check it out. The one on Memorial east of Penn is the better of the two located here.

I believe there is a sale going on at the OSU/OKC campus this weeked as well, at 900 N. Portland.
