Great pictures of some nicely grown hosta. And I agree with you...it does not get any better than Great Expectations!

As I mentioned on the Sans posts, the deer have eaten all my hostas. In two weeks all was gone down to just stems. They must really be hungry. I'll post a street view of my house. It is on a very busy street. Very noisy. They come at about 3 am. I hope it doesn't continue in spring. Now it doesn't matter.

Try Liquid Fence, available everywhere, or Bobex repellent. If your Hosta are truly all gone at this point do it in the Spring when the leaves first start emerging and repeat as new growth occurs. If you still have some Hosta left use it now. The idea is to get the deer to go to your neighbor's house and eat their plants. :)

Stush, you have very nice hostas, big gorgeous plants. Why go and buy new cultivars which are small and take many years to look as good as the ones you have. I replaced a lot of my very common hostas 2 years ago, but your plants are the interesting types! Welcome to the forum!

Your last photo shows lots of tulips in the front bed. Deer like tulips almost as much as they like hosta, so unless you take action early, you'll lose your hosta again. In addition to Liquid Fence, you could try putting plastic netting right on top of the plants; it wouldn't be very noticeable but it would deter the deer because they cannot get at the foodstuff. You could put the plastic netting down this fall after you clean up you beds so it would be ready first thing in the spring. I, too, welcome you. Nance

The seedling on the left in the third pic sure looks like it has Sagae for its momma or papa. Does it to you? It really is an attractive plant.

I enjoyed your pics. My only criticism would be your spelling. Great Expatiatian,really? Lol? Sorry about that,but spelling is the only thing I am good at,besides hostas! Nice garden areas! Phil

No spell checker on this site. also the older I get the worse I get (sorry). Got over looked. Usually I type in excel and then copy and paste here so my spelling is checked but sometimes I don't.
The reason for new cultivars is to get something like the old standard only better. Great Expectations takes 5 years or more to get beautiful. There is a new one out that looks just like it. Paradigm looks similar (see 2nd. picture) but grows to this size in just 2 years.
As far as the stripes go, I think they are taking short cuts. Notice that it doesn't stay that way long. It reverts back easily. Also looking over a bed of hosta at a 10 foot distant, doesn't look any better than typical greenish yellow types. But wait and see.

Les, I didn't notice it before. It does but it was growing there for years before I planted Sagae. It was way over the other side of the yard. Sagae grows the fastest of all my hosta. It can over take even my big Blue Angel. No hosta was able to grow next to her. I moved Sagae and make up 5 different clumps and one year you can't tell I cut it up. One grew into a nice size even in the bag one person left it in for 3 months. I get seedlings all over the place like weeds. I let them go and look for variegation. Got only 2 in last 6 years.

Hi, Stush! Glad to have another hosta fancier arrive on the scene. This month I am driving south with my new collection ....and my new passion for.....HOSTA. We'll see if I can bring beauty to a zone 8b hosta bed as some others on here have.

I have a Blue Angel, one of the first I planted. I cannot wait to get back to Alabama and see if it is gigantic yet. Killing frost is yet to arrive there.

I notice that you refer to your Blue Angel as "she" and "her." In my case, I'm convinced I have a boy Blue Angel, since the Navy's Blue Angels flying group is located about 60 miles or so away in Pensacola FL. I of course had no idea it would be a giant hosta when I planted it so close to my alocasias. But if segae grows fast, I think I need one of those too.

Your plants look very lush and full, glad you got the shots of them before the deer found such a great green salad.

Nice Hostas! You can download a Google tool Bar that has a spell checker (among other good stuff) that works in the Garden Web Forums.

As Babka says,check out your browser. My Firefox 4 browser now has the spell check enabled because I'm doing proofreading for Project Gutenberg. I don't usually worry about spelling either, and had it disabled because I don't like being nagged about WORDS. But now I must be conscious of being PROPER. (rats)

Thanks All, Some times even my spell checker gives up. Some times I miss spell but the word is correct in the wrong usage. Any why, all that's important is the message that I think all understands.
