I just lay some chicken wire over the area and that works very well. When the bulbs start to come up, I take it off. You can let the plants grow through it, but then you can't remove it until the foliage dies back in late spring or early summer. So it's easier to work or plant around the dying foliage without the chicken wire in the way.

I did that, too, (chicken wire on the ground over bulbs -- be sure to secure it) and I recommend it. You also can bury the chicken wire over the bulbs, with an inch or two of dirt on top, if the plantings aren't going to be moved for awhile. I did this with some of my bulbs and it worked great. The only disadvantage is that you can't plant annuals on top of the bulbs when they're done, but I did this in areas where I don't put other flowers. It saves having to recover the bulbs each year.

Darn little squirrels can be pests but I still like them :)

Will hostas come up through chicken wire?
I like to plant bulbs around the hostas as the hosta foliage comes up later to cover the dying bulb foliage.

If you know where your hosta crowns are, you could just fit the chicken wire over the bulbs but not directly over the crowns of the hosta (cut a hole in the chicken wire or fit pieces around the hostas). The foliage comes out of a hosta crown rather thickly and you might get some tearing if the chicken wire is right over it. You could get the wire pretty close to the crowns if you needed to although I'd leave some extra room because the hosta crowns will get larger pretty quickly. Good luck!

Soak the bulbs in blood meal solution, dry then plant. Rodents are repelled. Can be purchased in a bottle.

Wouldn't moles/voles be attracted to the blood meal?

It smells like death especially to herbivorous rodents that are after starchy bulbs.

I sprinkled blood meal around my bulbs two years ago when I planted them and the little critters avoided them. Last year I tried the chicken wire and it worked well too, but it was inconvenient to plant other stuff in around the bulbs in the spring, so it came out.

That's why I take it off in the spring when the bulbs are just starting to come up, as I mentioned above.

I have a different solution, I just plant bulbs that are not eaten by rodents and squirrels. I have found that species tulips are not bothered, and some are very attractive, notably T. praestans unicum, a variegated leaved bright red tulip, and also other species tulips. One year I lost all the hybrid tulips I planted but the only praestans that was dug up was abandoned in the next bed and proceeded to bloom anyway sitting on top of the ground the next spring. Also all daffodils and lots of other bulbs are poisonous, some catalogs will tell which. Muscari don't seem to be bothered in my yard, either.
