Shocking

Transplant shock is trauma experienced by the plant as a result of the transplanting process. Carefully considering the monthly as well as daily weather conditions and the plant's growth cycle can minimize if not eliminate transplant shock. One way to minimize shock is not to expose the roots longer than necessary and make sure the roots are not dry.

Take a plant that's been in full shade and put it in full sun. Within 1 month those leafs will be burnt to a crisp "like Butch's were" "shocked" and the plant will break dormant buds to produce leafs to absorb light for next years growth.

So basically we're talking semantics here. Who doesn't know this??????

Clearly you read EO's report on going from low light to high light but not carefully enough to understand that the affect occurred within just a few days, not 2 weeks and in fact that was the first I had ever read about this affect.

Btw, EO went on the explain in detail why this happened while you give little old ladies (like me) horticulture like "shocked". I never see valuable information from you -- just seems like you drop by periodically for a little attack. Are you bored since Ken isn't around for you to beat up on?

I'll run it all past my Botany instructor - never mind.

Your true colors are showing in the attacks, so please don't come on a public forum and call me out with your childish attacks. I'm sorry that you think I'm attacking Butch cause I don't always agree with him.. It's my right to agree or disagree with what you or anyone says. Also sorry that I have a busy life and can't come here everyday to type info to you, so stop trying to control what I do! Also Butch is a grown adult and can defend himself "like he does" and doesn't need you and others here to start trouble with other users. Just so you know I'll be busy for about 6 days and won't be back till then, ok?

I am certain there is nobody on this forum, who would willfully attack another forum member. (other than a newcomer trying to protect us from amateur comedians LOL). It is just that some of us are more skillful in dishing out "funny" statements, while others need to flag their posts with lots of LOLs.
I am in here almost every day, and I enjoy seeing the many pictures of peoples gardens. But I don't feel comfortable making "mushy" compliments - I leave this for the ladies.
I was thinking about creating a boilerplate text, just for this purpose, LOL

Many greenhouse operators disturb young tomato plants by brushing their tops gently or shaking them to simulate breezes. The plants grow more stocky and sturdy.

Now researchers in Taiwan have found that once tomato seedlings had their first set of true leaves, watering with cold waterÂcolder than ambient air temperature, which we are typically advised to useÂresulted in plants with shorter internodes (the spaces between leaves) but no reduction in the number of internodes. The irrigation water used ranged from 49Ë to 59ËF. The study, reported in Hortideas (October 1999), did not report how quickly these seedlings adjusted after setting out, but did indicate that positive results were expected.

Dr. Autar Mattoo, at the USDA Vegetable Laboratory in Beltsville, MD explains that shocking a plant causes hormonal changes which can help the plant get ready for the next shock. Providing long hours of strong light, brushing the plants, and watering with cold water help young seedlings get ready for full sunlight, breezes, and chilly spring rains.

Q: One gardener told me you can place your plant in a cool dark room (preferably a closet where you can achieve 100% light deprivation) for 72 hours straight. After those three days, plunge the plant instantly into brilliant sunlight, keep it nicely watered, and withn another 24 hours it will be covered with new flower buds. You should have an explosion of blooms within a week.

A: It sounds like forcing bulbs to bloom. It doesn't happen that fast, but will get them to bloom when you want to.

A: I've done it with various Christmas cacti with some success. But it usually takes a bit longer - more like about a week or two.....and cooler temps too. I've put mine in the cold cellar for up to 3 weeks and then taken them out and put them in a south facing window.

A: I know from 25 years of greenhouse growing that a sure fired way to get things to bloom is to make them think that they are going to die...thus, we wilt our bedding plants to just before toooooo wilted to get them to set bud.

A: That is the method used to make Poinsettias, tulip bulbs, amaryllis bulbs, and other bulbs bloom early. It's called forcing and Is a total light deprivation method. So you are essentially fooling the plants to think they are ready to bloom.

A: Some plants flower to produce seeds when the conditions are unfavorable for the plant; longer and cooler nights, drought, reduction in nutrients and, in the case of some house plants, being pot-bound will trigger blooming. The strategy is that even if the plant dies, the seeds will be available when conditions improve.

A: Other plants flower immediately as soon as conditions are favorable: shorter and [usually] warmer nights and a plentiful water. The stragety is that the new seeds will sprout in the favorable period. Cacti require a long period of drought, followed by a thorough watering just as the nights are getting shorter.
