IVY is my arch enemy...ideas for removal!

I know that many PNW gardeners fight with ivy on a regular basis so I though I might get some good advice from here. I purchased a new (to me) home last fall and own property behind my fence that is au naturel. This means:

Ivy covering trees to the point it has taken a few down this winter

Ivy covering the ground

Blackberries

16+ years of yard debris, limbs, wood, junk under the ivy

I am trying to clean this area up so I can make a bird habitat and a natural space with native plants. Right now you step back there and you sink through the ivy to about your knee. This is a large area so just pulling the ivy is almost impossible. Do I dare spray a chemical to kill it off (for right now...I know it won't end the problem) so we can clean what is beneath it? If so what one? Do I just start pulling knowing that this would be a full-time job for someone for over a week and I don't have the time or money for that now? What tips can you give me? HELP I'm drowning in this damn ivy!
