Wintering over purple fountain grass

Have any of you ever wintered over purple fountain grass, Pennisetum rubrum? Every year, I buy a new one for more than I want to pay and use it as the centerpiece of an urn with Blue Pearl impatiens and sweet potato Blackie. This combo loves heat and I have to wait for heat for it to do its best and then it is gorgeous.

The purple fountain grass is particularly slow to produce its "foxtails" and I thought if I could winter it over in the garage or basement, I'd save money and have a head start on next year. Have you tried this? What were the results? Thanks!
