Heavenly blue morning glory next the Dolichos lablab (purple hyacinth beans) trained on the arch with pink and white cleome next to them.
Giant Blue Lobelia next to the giant white flowering hosta (what the heck is the name? I forget) and the white phlox

GG, 'giant white flowering hosta' could be a Hosta plantaginea.

perennials:
-Kirengeshoma (in part-shade, in part-sun it bloomed in early August),

-nepeta WL,
-clematis 'Violet Charm', 'The Prsident', 'Dr. Rupel' (all three are good rebloomers and second bloom is not any worse than the first one) and 'Duchess of Edinburgh'(nothing to talk about in comparison to the first flush).

Shrubs:
-Clethra 'Creel Calico', '16 candles' and 'Hummingbird' (last two almost done),
-Abelia 'Ed Goucher' and 'Confetti',
-Caryopteris 'Dark Knight' and new on a market 'Grand Bleu' (it worth a separate thread to describe of how gorgeous it is),

-weigela 'French Lace' (become a huge octopus-like plant just in one season. Looks like a swap candidate to me.),

If not roses and annuals, sun part of the garden would look just plain boring, though my shade borders still interesting as they rely more on texture than on a flowers.

I've had a really rough season :( Aside from my annual asters, my cosmos Bright Lights, and my salvia Victoria, even my annuals are the pits. Pink/red/white mix cosmos are pathetic, morning glories are sad (only half a dozen blooms a day), hyacinth bean has yet to show a bloom, nasturtiums, marigolds, geraniums, asarina, - everything is just not doing great this year.

I have to admit I'm looking forward to closing up shop this season and looking forward to next year. Except my roses. Dang, are they doing great this year! Too bad I don't know what I did so I could repeat it next year, lol!

A lot, but much of it's pretty scraggly right now. I still have a couple of Nikko Blue hydrangea blooms. Rose of Sharon is the perennial star right now - I have a double red/violet I forget the name of, and Bluebird. Annual dahlias are stupendous right now, making notes to grow more Collarette Dandy next year, in particular. I like my marigolds this year, too - I have Ragged Reggie, Harlequin, and Aurora Fire out front and Flagstaff in my veggie garden.

And Joe Pye weed (which I LOVE) and Kiss Me Over the Garden Gate making a pretty striking combination together.

Still blooming, but miss the fullness of the flowers from last month.

My Kirengeshoma is just budding out, maybe it needs more sun. It's young yet too, planted last year.

Sea holly, 2 years old, finally looks like something - statice-like blooms on long (though drooping) spikes.

I'm surprised at how many foxglove are still blooming - the short secondary spikes seem to just keep coming.

There's fairy and bonica rose, red lobelia, gaura, some late lavenders, thyme, rudbeckia, the indomitable verbena bonariensis, coreopsis Sweet Dreams, and threadleaf C., plus a tall (non-hardy? yellow and red variety, many kinds of sedum, butterfly weed, anemones, second flush of rose campion, a few daylillies, and some (slightly ratty-looking) campanulas of different varieties.

Woody bloomers include tardiva hydrangea, several "spent hydrangeas that still look good, rose of sharon, vitex, and butterfly bush - what a weed! And some late great clematis.

The flowers that make me cringe at this time of year are the sweet autumn clematis. This is a pernicious weed here on the cape, and I've been unable to eradicate it from my yard. It's at its worst when it infiltrates the "good clematis - it's impossible to kill the weed without damaging the desirable varieties.

Nan, re: Keringeshoma bloom.
I have 3 clumps of it in a same border with 3, 2 and 1 hours of direct western sun. From the morning till noon they are in a full shade, after that in a dappled shade till sun hits them late afternoon.
Their bloom sequence and time in bloom:
-3hrs-early-mid August, 10+ days,
-2hrs- late August-mid Sept, 15+ days,
-1hr - mid Sept-early Oct, 20+ days.
I guess by increasing sun exposure you could make them bloom earlier, but will reduce bloom time.
Also, though all three clumps are about the same size (6-8 stems/clump) buds production is more heavier on a '3hrs' clump and it's little bid taller than another two.

Thanks for the info! I can't wait to see it in bloom - think I'll be happy with a couple of days of flowers at this point.
