September Sale Season (Seattle)

Buy and plant now, roots of most things I have planted lately actively elongating. Nurseries discounting to move inventory. Sky (185th & Aurora) had their big fall event today, with significant price reductions continuing through tomorrow (I believe). Heronswood (Kingston) has an event of their own coming the 16th. Colvos Creek/Country Store (Vashon/Maury Islands) have 2 for 1 the same weekend.

Any others?

Thosett's in Kent had 30% off all perennials and shrubs. Not sure when it ends.

Haye's in Issaquah has lots of 25% off perennials.

Fall is definitely my favorite time to shop and plant. I'd love to hear about other sales.

Here's a picture as of this morning from one of my Osage Blackberry plants. It's fruiting in mid-September but it is normally an early variety (e.g. late June). I planted the Osage in late August last year and I think it may have message up this years fruiting schedule. I'm guessing the fruit timing will adjust over the winter. I guess my point is that it is probably not uncommon for blackberry plants to fruit out of season, especially if they are new plants.

There are so many variables that go into an economic forecast that make predicting the weather look easy. Like weathermen, they usually get part of the picture right but never have a model so complete that you can watch it unfold before your eyes. Until the capital markets gain confidence that the banking industry understands how to access risk in the mortgages they underwrite, you are not going to see a recovery. I think we are still in the discovery mode right now, so we have at least another year for the big picture to be understood and the issues addressed and fixed. Remember MBS's(mortgage backed securities) were viewed as a relatively safe play and often used as hedges against more risky business. That belief has been proven wrong and now the yield is deemed too low for the risk. This is one of the reasons the Fed has cut discount rate, to help improve the yield to attract investment. So far it hasn't worked. Fixing this issue is going to be complicated and may involve giving investors a better yields and requiring borrowers to put more money in the game. This means that fewer people are going to qualify for loans and the interest rates are going to be higher. Therefore, the cure may make things worse before they get better. Normally a bottom comes when there is complete capitulation and the prospect for the future looks its worse. In the residential real estate market that capitulation is hard to come by since people can simply not sell or rent. However, even if people were to start dropping their prices substantially, I don't know if that would spark a recovery since the money is not there to finance the purchases. As for when the recovery will occur, write all the years from now until 2015 on a board and throw a dart with your eyes closed. Where it lands is as good of a prediction as these economist's predictions. Just like a weatherman can tell you that global warming will make more Hurricanes, they still can't tell you when they will occur or where they will strike. Keep in mind that if we fall into a recession, as some are forecasting, all bets are off. During the last recession we used home equity to dig us out. Now that that is gone we would need business to step up and make investments. My feeling is that foreign investment is going to be the savior coming from all the places that depend on us to buy their products. Anyone speak Arabic or Chinese?

Seattle remodel/addition advice

We are in Seattle. We did a complete gut remodel of our 1400 sq ft daylight basement last year, including removing existing slab, digging down far enough to accommodate new slab/insulation/radiant heat, adding foundation under a first floor porch, all new electrical/plumbing, two new beams (one glulam and one steel), all new windows (11), new stairs, two sets French doors, new bath (tile/frameless glass/custom vanity with soapstone counter), new laundry room (tile, laminate counters, IKEA cabs) custom casework throughout,etc. This was with a somewhat high-end builder, we happened to catch them when they needed work so we got a better price than we would have during the busy season. I'd have to dig up the exact numbers, but I know our final figure (lump sum, with some allowances and some change orders) with the contractor came out to under $250K (tax included) -- this doesn't include engineers, architect, permits. Our bids ran from $204K to $300K. I can tell you that construction costs in the Seattle area jumped significantly 18 months ago and have continued to go up. (We got a rude surprise between time we started to draw up plans and time we bid the project because costs shot up so suddenly.) It's not a cheap time to do a remodel in Seattle.

Yikes, Pat! I've removed roses from pots this size to repot or plant out. Usually run a long knife along the inside of the pot first, but sounds like you've already loosened the edges quite well! A sheet of sturdy aluminum foil slit up the middle to fit around the canes at soil level, overlapped & tucked down the inside a bit helps stabilize the surface. Then the pot can be tipped on its side to lay over a flat large trash bag & rolled side to side to help release the soil. If you have broken flower pot shards inside the drainage holes, those can be pushed into the pot with a bamboo stake to dislodge the bottom. Lift the bottom of the pot just enough to pull it off from that end. Should leave the soil still formed laying on the trash bag. You can cut or spade the snake-containing bottom away & dispose of it. Guessing Seattle's roots likely no deeper than a foot at this point. You could eyeball the rose's root's for any snake eggs, which would probably be all together, and poke around the rootball a bit. Knowing the type of snake & its egg dimensions would help. Most eggs take at least a month to hatch & aren't buried deeply. You could wrap the remaining rootball with the trash bag, support the bottom & repot the rose in a smaller pot temporarily till you're satisfied all is well. Never found a snake nor eggs in an outside flowerpot, but plenty of frogs & toads who like to burrow down in the soft soil in the heat of the day & pop up unexpectedly. Did find a small (8") snake coiled around the base of a houseplant between the pot & a decorative planter. Not pleased! Threw some netting over the plant & pots so DH & I could lug the whole thing out to the garden. Snake disappeared within a few days, but the potted plant stayed out a while before repotting for the same reason. It was a tall snake plant (Sansevieria). Country living is seldom dull.

Swanson's in Seattle (Crown Hill), Emery's in Lynnwood and Molbaks in Woodinville all having fall planting sales. Emery's and Swanson's buy in fresh stock for their fall sale - don't know about Molbaks.

Today I started out for Camano with plants bought earlier (last weekend) from Sky, ducked into Emery's, walked through Plant Farm at Smokey Point, made a stop at Orchards (Stanwood) as well, where a truck had just unloaded some new offerings. Orchards had just ended a 2-week sale yesterday, but the others all had multi-item, broad category discounts in effect. Visit your favorite source soon, they probably have items priced to clear as well.

I need more new plants like I need a hole in the head, but I'm a sucker for a good sale, even if the discount isn't any more than my nursery employee discount. That fresh stock is just so appealing, plus the selection is excellent after a very ho-hum, lackluster nursery season. Got a Dichroa (evergreen hydrangea relative) that is about to burst into bloom, a couple of collector conifers and some great grasses and perennials, including some stunning heucheras.

LOL! That is precisely the problem - there are no holes in the beds. For something new to go in, something old must come out. I just can't stop buying new plants. At least I've tapered back on the tree acquisitions, though.

Clever!

I have no holes in my beds either, unless I dig something up and give it away. Whatever am I going to do with the magnolia wilsonii seedling (yes, one seed) that germinated for me this Spring. Not that at 5" tall I have to stress to much about where it could be planted just yet....

And I'm treating myself to a trip to Heronswood, Bainbridge Gardens, with a stop at Central Market tomorrow.

Everybody kept telling me not to plant photinia, but I wouldn't listen. Now that I'm a believer, I know that when I yank out just one photinia, there's room for a whole bunch of plants! I knew photina where good for something!

Just got back from H'wood and got 6 plants for $49.00--best I've ever done there!

Today and tomorrow are a big sale at Magnuson Park in Seattle with lots of vendors!! The web site below has a link that lists the vendors!

Well, Plantknitter, a big sarcastic *Thanks Alot* for the Northwest Hort. plant sale info. lol

I just got home from Heronswood too. I didn't get out of there with such a reasonable bill. All my plants are still in the car because I'm too ashamed to let my husband see how out-of-control-impulsive I am.

So even though I'm sitting here stewing in my own financial guilt I'm now mapquesting directions to the NW. hort sale.

I got 6 plants some out-of-state friends wanted me to pick up for them at Heronswood for over 90 dollars. How's that? (My own 6 plants were 70 something). There were certainly a great many other attractive items on hand as well. Tomorrow will be out at Colvos, didn't know the NHS was having something the same weekend as well.

I had a great morning at Heronswood - 5 plants I didn't need but will fit in nicely.

What I needed was that stroll through the garden taking notes - hadn't been there this late in the year for some time. (It's also been some time since I've been able to park inside instead of trekking down that county road - joy!)

Did anyone else notice those delightful little (tree?) frogs hopping around in the hoop houses?

PlantAmnesty sale at Magnuson next weekend. Usually some great stuff for peanuts. Nurseries from all over and home gardeners donate plants. Often the things that didn't sell for them are collector plants that might've been passed on because of lack of familiarity or priciness. One year I got a variegated conifer that the nursery had marked over a hundred dollars for free, because nobody bought it for even a fraction of the original price at the PA sale either (the dribble of unsold plants are given away at closing time).

Colvos deal wasn't 2 for 1, it was 3 for 2 (in other words, 1/3 off). ("Buy 2, get 1 free").

Hi all, I haven't posted for some time now, too busy in the garden, but I was so intrigued to hear of others who do the same things I do, (leave plants in the car etc.). I will always say that this is the last big plant hurrah ... until the next one!! The NHS sale was great. I wasn't going to buy anything and just drop off my donations to the NHS table. As soon as I walked in the building I knew I was in trouble. There seemed to be a bit of competitive shopping going on too which kind of added to the frenzy!! Sigh... For those who didn't make it, the new location was great and there were lots of cool plants and just plain nice plants for the not so addicted gardeners.

I'm still in the Southwest collecting hundreds of cold hardy cacti and succulent cuttings and seeds. Now I'm in Durango. If gas were free, the price would be right!

I need more than a hole in the bed - I need an assistant! I have so many unplanted plants right now it's ridiculous. I already had about 20 to plant and then went to the Clearview Perennials sale a couple weeks ago and bought more. Vowed that would be it (of course), then made a late night shopping trip to Top Foods (for bananas and milk) on 175th and couldn't pass up their screamin' deals! Sigh...

There is another sale in Marysville this weekend:

at Bouquet Banque--the sale is Sat and Sunday Oct 1 & 2, from 1pm to 4pm each day.
She has lots of woodland plants from China.
All plants 20% off plus she is giving 20% matching to KWIHEED--benefitting women in small business (?plant business?) in Cameroon.
I met this lady at the NW Hort Magnussen Park sale and she has some really cool plants. I got an Arisaema candidissimum from her there.

I'm going about 10 AM Sat, I hope.
