Hebe name ID help...Please

He everybody,

I bought some Hebe's the other day at Walmart without checking the tags, 'cause I usually come home and look it up to check it out.... Well, I can't find infor on one of them, and the tag just has the name, no flower color, height. (don't throw mud, I learned my lesson)

I tried the web and a few sites, books, etc... Does anyone know anything about: Hebe Veronica Formosa?

I found information on the Hebe Quicksilver and Hebe Rakaiensis.... but the Hebe Veronica Formosa seems to be called by other names.... So is it Blue, Pink, or White???

Thanks for any help you can give.

Yep -- it appears that what you have is what used to be called Hebe formosa, and is now called Veronica formosa. Whoever labeled the plant apparently doesn't understand scientific names and combined the two. The link is a picture. Pretty blue flower!

i think the leaves of yours are too large for o. delavayi. that one has leaf and flower of approx. the same size (very small). most species of these that i am familiar with are fall bloomers, except for x burkwoodii. o. fragrans and o. heterophyllus are probably the most frequently planted in the southeast and the difference in leaf form of juvenile and adult leaves may make it difficult to i.d. for the average gardener. i would just tell folk that "i have a tea olive shrub". :-)

The second photo looks like my "Painted Clouds" which is a rebloomer. I don't think the other two clumps are that old b/c of the size of the leaves. Older, old fashion iris tend to have narrower leaves, and these flowers look like the tall bearded iris, maybe Dream Lover, or Rolling Thunder (dark blue) There is a tall bearded called "Immortality" that is white.

My guess is Vulcan or Enterprise. Here is Vulcan still in the pot when I purchased it last year. And here it is last week. Still small but I think it will be a beauty. Here is a shot of the hosta on a garden tour that inspired me to get Vulcan. I'm not sure what this one is but a hosta grower looked at the photo on my cell phone and said it was Vulcan or Enterprise. So when I found Vulcan at Lowe's at the end of the year, of course I picked it up.

Thanks for responding! No, I don't think they were local. I usually got most of my roses from Heirloom, ARE, and one other whose name I can't recall. These two particular roses may have come from elsewhere, since I was looking for specific names, but I just don't remember. However, you've reminded me that somewhere I did keep some records.... if I can only find that notebook.... LOL it was about 25 years ago but I bet that notebook is around here somewhere. Although I'm not sure that will help me assign which name to which rose, but it's a start. Thank you! :) Dee

I thought Hebes used to be known as Veronica, now I'm just confused. They're definitely close relatives. The difference might be that most or all Hebes are evergreen while Veronica die back in the winter and can withstand more cold. Both are easily grown around these parts... I should get me some "whipcord" Hebe, them things are cool.
