Disappointing this year--already thinking of next year...

Apologies if this sounds like whining, because it is:

Everything from seed, my annual flowerboxes are barely filling in or flowering, and it's practically August! The annual lobelias finally filled to the edge of the boxes, laurentia looking skimpy, browallia just started to grow past 6" tall, black-eyed susan vines are growing well, but no flowers! The painted tongue might *MIGHT* have a single bud on another skimpy plant, WS snapdragons are probably gonna die in frost before getting taller than 3". Same thing with the Salvia blue bedders. Profusion zinnias have one bud each the size of baby peas, nasturtiums are on their way out, and the pot marigolds have nothing but leaves. I water and fertilize religiously but to no avail, save the calibrachoa I bought, which have started to become thuggish in the flowerbox.

I wonder if my flowers know I'm already planning for their demise and next year's replacements. Truthfully, I probably put them out too soon in mid May, but I guess you live and learn.

Thanks for letting me rant.
