WOOOOO!!!!! My first rose cutting :-)

After a month of just sitting there, my Bonica cutting from Marie's garden has rooted! Not just little weeny roots, but ones about 3" long! (Considering the entire cutting is about 8", and there was NOTHING last week, this isn't half bad.) I am SO psyched! :-D

(I used the baggie method described in the FAQ on the roses forum, except I didn't have any rooting hormone so it just went right in the soil.)

Congratulations!!! I played with rooting roses for years before I even heard of rooting hormone. They aren't hard, and we got about half a rose garden out of baggies.

Thanks for sharing in my excitement, everyone. You certainly are an understanding bunch. Vettin, I filled a cup with potting soil and sand. I stuck the cutting in without rooting hormone. I buried the cup in the ground next to a mostly shaded fence and watered every few days. I did not cover the cup because we have humid weather here. I will probably use rooting hormone in the future for its anti-fungal properties.

Thank you! Yes, I pretty much am addicted! I spent the summer obsessing about roses and it has not been any different this winter. One of my fathers rose cuttings is the one currently blooming. I took pictures today. I have a couple that only have two leaves, but they seem to have great roots going. I got them from the head gardener/landscaper for one of the bigger property owners in town here. He takes care of multiple business properties and rentals and happened to be pruning some roses at a local tea house at the time. He offered me the cuttings. I don't know what rose it is so I just tagged it "tea house climber". They seem okay, despite the lack of top growth. They had pretty good root systems when I removed them from their baggies and potted them up into their individual greenhouses. I'm hoping for the best. The ones I am most thrilled about are a couple from the local library. It is a single petaled pink with a white eye and it is so sweet. They are always in bloom all season and are vigorous and healthy. I took many pictures this summer intending on posting them to see if anyone could identify it but haven't yet. They look somewhat like Ballerina, if I recall the name correctly. I don't think it is carefree beauty because I think the bushes have been there far too long to be that. Either way it is a sweetie and now I have two of them, too! Again, JOY!! And, yes, soon I will have roses for all!!

I don't know about vinegar as it's strong enough to kill top growth of plants. I wouldn't have any idea what concentration to use. They do use hydrogen peroxide in some houseplant fertilizers. Perhaps that might be a better choice? Oxygen Plus is the brand. You might research it to see what percent solution to make. I have known people who have frequently rooted roses in a glass or vase of water. My grandmother and great grandmothers did it in Alabama and an aunt used to do it outside Pittsburgh, PA. I can root soft wood things like Coleus and harder ones like Althea (Rose of Sharon) in water here, but not roses. They just burn out and die. The aridity and heat are enough that I don't try those in water here anymore as it's a waste of time. Along the coast, I've known prunings dropped into nursery cans to root from roses, apple trees and many other shrubs, but when I deliberately tried them, they died. Take a look at the Oxygen Plus or perhaps something like Miracid and see what seems more suitable. The Miracid may be too salty. Just a thought. Kim

Hi Joey: I looked at the link you provided. Your rooting looks great on the window sill. Someone told me that the guy who bred Sheila's Perfume rose kept his pot indoor. Plants like stable temperature: Either keep them dormant completely like in a dark unheated garage (water once or twice a month), or keep them indoor if your house is always warm & watered frequently. When I lived in a townhome, my roommate had 20+ houseplants, but kept the temp. hot above 70, even at night. The plants in the humid bathroom thrived the most. But in my present house, where it's freezing at night, and hot during the day (many windows) ... plants don't do well when the air is dry and with temp. fluctuations. My neighbor keeps a red geranium blooming constantly on her window-sill through zone 5a winter. Her secret: she mists it everyday with a bottle of water. She also keeps her house warm, even at night.

Well, Greening, if you follow directions with compulsive accuracy often enough, it eventually becomes second nature, and thenceforth qualifies as a skill.

pm2... I killed it this summer. :( I was so sad! Last year it got accidentally crushed but then grew back from a tiny stump... but then I moved... and I took it along in a pot but it died. :-(

:-( Awww! I have done that, don't feel too bad. I bet you don't even have room for that full grown rose now. :-) Another poster..aegis?...posted photos of his Bonica on another post and it was gorgeous. I didn't recognize it as a Bonica because the one I have looks awful. It has gradually received too much shade and it puts out a few stems but that is it. I am debating whether it is worth trying to save it and dig it out next year. It is fun to start them from cuttings though. Maybe you will try more next year. Have any candidates you could take cuttings from?

Oh yes. Actually, rooting things in general is quite fun-- phlox and rosemary both root easily, although roses seem to be more hit or miss. Hopefully this coming year I'll have more time to garden now that I'm a bit more settled in. :)

Greening...I meant do you have other roses you might want to take cuttings from next year? I didn't realize phlox and rosemary rooted easily. I have a Nora Leigh Phlox that I would like more of and I might try that next year.

I have enjoyed rooting things in the past. I still have two boxwood shrubs that I started from cuttings and one is huge now and the other one is a cute, full, one and half feet tall. Boxwood are very easy to start from cuttings too. Just a long wait for the shrub to be a useful size.

I am going to try rooting annuals in the spring to increase the amount that I have for containers etc. next year. Lantana, geraniums, maybe a couple of sweet potato vine. See if that will work out for me.

I hope you will have more time to garden this year, too.
